Armored enemies that are out of range for the revenant. Like Loki and Fenris mechs, this types of enemies not worth your sniperammo.

They are also widely used in cutscenes and interrogations.

So sniping armored targets...What is SNIPER for then? I just indiscriminately shoot stuff thats too far away with the thing.

Am I right to guess that Sniper is for bringing targets down even if they have barrier/shields, as long as its not armor?

I mostly use the snipers on Scions and Preatorians. You don't want to let them get up close. Snipers are also useful for blowing the head of a YMIR mech (and then grap your popcorn and watch the CAIN-reaction).
So basically use snipers for all the big ones and dangerous enemies like heavys or pyros (pistols are also great to deal with pyros, just shoot the tanks on their back) and pistols for low-value targets which can be dangerous if ignored.

Shepard uses (in cutscenes) his pistol everytime to intimidate a NPC instead of his more impressive guns.

EDIT: Cutscenes is misleading. I meant those scenes like the interrogation in Thanes loyality mission or the various renegade interrupts (e.g. burning this annoying krogan who's talking about conquering the whole universe and stuff like that).

It´s for people that like to take down enemies with the least amount of bullets possible and not like to spray and pray with oversized assault rifles.

In short: Pistols are for pros.

Pistols are placeholders. They exist so that when you find the save editor, you have a slot to place something else more appropriate.

They're last resort, but honestly, if you lose ammo on all your guns at that point, you might as well be dead.

I like to run vindicator/widow on insanity, which means that there can be a few places where ammo runs pretty tight. The carnifex actually does respectable damage (though the starting pistol is pretty useless), so it's nice to have.

I prefer Revenant/Viper myself. It eliminates the need for a semi-automatic anti-armour weapon like the Carnifex.

Crippled mechs, flaming vorcha with less than a quarter of their health, that poor merc you just neural shocked - it's a clean-up weapon.

The canifex cannon or whatever pretty bad being a backup weap, it runs out of ammo faster than shotgun. I personally use pistol for accuracy if I dont have Vindicator. I use it sometimes to finish off the final boss.

Pistol whipping, cause Shep doesn't carry a knife.

Whenever I have to shoot an object. Like the support struts in overlord, or the tanks on the human reaper.

I use my pistols whenever I face armored targets at close to mid range. Sniper rifles I save for strong targets like Harbinger, praetorians, scions, vorcha, krogan (when far).

I actually use the pistol quite often as a Soldier. Pistols are useful if you take them as any other weapon. They can also be a great asset if you run out of ammo with your main firearms. Believe me, if you know how to use the pistol, it's as good as you can imagine.
