been playing it quite a bit since. I did the
magi and dwarf noble intro sections, and played all the way through
Lothering without any trouble. Once I started
the Circle Tower (and the following section in The Fade) my game has
been crashing to the desktop every 5-15 minutes, primarily during
combat. I see some information from people
about similar problems but I tried the following with no luck:
Turn
graphics down to low
Disable online feedback/uploading/etc
Update
drivers from Catalyst 10.5 to 10.6
-dx9 command line parameter (this
seemed fine till I got to Sloth, when crashing happened frequently)
Finally
I tried setting processor affinity to just a single core, and that let
me play for about 20 minutes with combat before I stopped playing last
night.
My specs:
AMD Phenom II X3 720
2.8GHz
Radeon HD 5770 (1GB)
4GB DDR3 1600
Windows 7 x64, fully updated
Is
this section of the game worse than the others? I didn't
have any problems before I got to this
section, so I'm hoping it's isolated.

I am using a soundblaster audigy in case its a sound issue. I'm going to try switching to onboard sound and see if that makes any difference.
-edit- I also purchased the Steam version + Awakening bundle if that makes any difference.
-edit- I've installed the DirectX End User Runtimes Redistributable and that seems to have made a difference. I was able to play for an hour or so before crashing. It could be a fluke. Still crashed though. Somewhere I read that Dragon Age was designed to use DirectX 9 and Windows 7 is 10/11. Since I have a clean install I didn't have all the older run times installed. Heres a link. www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx

I looked into automatic ways of setting the affinity, but none of them seemed to work.

Once downloaded just create a directory on your drive and unzip the file. Then add the file to your start up directory so it automatically starts with Windows. The second tab is called "Application Profiles" Go to browse and locate your Steam apps directory and select DAOrigins.exe from your bin-ship directory. Set the affinity to the core you want and VOILA! Every time DAOrigins.exe loads the Task Assignment Manager will automatically select core affinity for you.
This was a dirty, drawn out, hacked together solution just so I can play this game... but there you have it. It works and I'm enjoying the game once again.
-edit- On a side note, the program doesn't have built in system tray minimizing so its kind of a nuissance to have on my start menu. I found a little app called TrayIt! that forces Task Assignment Manager to the system tray and out of my way. I have 8 gigs of RAM so I'm not worried about these two tiny apps if it means I can play DA "hassle free". Its found here:

But it hasn't crashed on me, except when I forgot to set the affinity. Then it took just over an hour to crash (with AA at 4x, I think). So it seems to work.
I must say I find it a rather big flaw that multiple cores would be a problem in this era where multiple cores are so abundant.

EDIT: Set affinity to dual core instead of triple and game runs crash free now. How the hell did this not get caught and fixed earlier?

I have almost the exact same specs as Cruseydr (have a Radeon 4850 instead) and had gotten to a certain battle that would CTD on me 100% of the time. I'll try setting the affinity to single-core, but will it affect overall visual quality? I currently have the game maxed.

Game was never optimized for multi core processors? Lots of tweener games are that way (Empire Total War, for instance)

What's more, this is my second playthrough, following a pc upgrade, and before I upgraded my processor, I don't remember DA:O ever crashing.

Odd, setting affinity to 2 cores still gives me crashes from spell effects. I must have it set to 1 core to prevent crashes.
AMD 3 core Phenom II 720 and windows 7 64bit.
To be honest im a bit disgusted that the problem of the game constantly crashing for so many people has been around for quite some time now with no support from the developers. And, if you contact customer support, their advice is still to cancel all unesessary processes. Which to the best of my knowledge has helped no one at all.
