I just picked up the game last sunday on the great Steam sale, and have
been playing it quite a bit since.  I did the
magi and dwarf noble intro sections, and played all the way through
Lothering without any trouble.  Once I started
the Circle Tower (and the following section in The Fade) my game has
been crashing to the desktop every 5-15 minutes, primarily during
combat.  I see some information from people
about similar problems but I tried the following with no luck:
Turn
graphics down to low
Disable online feedback/uploading/etc
Update
drivers from Catalyst 10.5 to 10.6
-dx9 command line parameter (this
seemed fine till I got to Sloth, when crashing happened frequently)

Finally
I tried setting processor affinity to just a single core, and that let
me play for about 20 minutes with combat  before I stopped playing last
night.

My specs:
AMD Phenom II X3 720
2.8GHz
Radeon HD 5770 (1GB)
4GB DDR3 1600
Windows 7 x64, fully updated

Is
this section of the game worse than the others? I didn't
have any problems before I got to this
section, so I'm hoping it's isolated.

I am having a similar crash. The exception code I am getting is c0000005 . I have Windows 7 x64, fully updated. I am using a GeForce 9800 GTS 512 so I doubt its a driver issue given our differing cards. I am crashing CONSTANTLY now that I've left Ostragar and it seems to be increasing in frequency. Now I have to save after every fight because anything at all can trigger it. Zevran talking, a trap being triggered, a cutscene, anything at all.

I am using a soundblaster audigy in case its a sound issue. I'm going to try switching to onboard sound and see if that makes any difference.

-edit- I also purchased the Steam version + Awakening bundle if that makes any difference.

-edit- I've installed the DirectX End User Runtimes Redistributable and that seems to have made a difference.  I was able to play for an hour or so before crashing.  It could be a fluke.  Still crashed though.  Somewhere I read that Dragon Age was designed to use DirectX 9 and Windows 7 is 10/11.  Since I have a clean install I didn't have all the older run times installed.  Heres a link.  www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx

After hours of fiddling about I think I've finally found the culprit. I'm running an AMD Phenom Triple Core processor. I set the affinity of the DAOrigins.exe to just one core in my task manager (CPU 1) and I haven't crashed since. I guess DA or Windows 7 has difficulty with multi-threading or something. I've been playing solid for hours now. The only problem is I don't know how to set the program to always run on a single core so thats my next plan of attack. Hope this helps someone.

Awesome, I was able to play all night with zero crashes!

I looked into automatic ways of setting the affinity, but none of them seemed to work.

Awesome to hear! I'll post back and send you a message if I figure out a more permanent solution.

Ok here's what I got. Toms Hardware Guide released a utility called Task Assignment Manager. Unfortunately the link to the app is broken on the main site and I had to find the file here:

Disclaimer: I have not scanned for viruses, use at your own risk.
http://www.filewatch...220460.0.0.html

Once downloaded just create a directory on your drive and unzip the file. Then add the file to your start up directory so it automatically starts with Windows. The second tab is called "Application Profiles" Go to browse and locate your Steam apps directory and select DAOrigins.exe from your bin-ship directory. Set the affinity to the core you want and VOILA! Every time DAOrigins.exe loads the Task Assignment Manager will automatically select core affinity for you.

This was a dirty, drawn out, hacked together solution just so I can play this game... but there you have it. It works and I'm enjoying the game once again.

-edit-  On a side note, the program doesn't have built in system tray minimizing so its kind of a nuissance to have on my start menu.  I found a little app called TrayIt! that forces Task Assignment Manager to the system tray and out of my way.  I have 8 gigs of RAM so I'm not worried about these two tiny apps if it means I can play DA "hassle free".  Its found here:

I just popped on here to find this exact solution.  First trip through the daemonspawn tower gave me the same 5-10 minute CTD problems.  The weird part is that I'm almost exactly in the same position that Cruseydr's in - same starting, same general path, almost the same overall system specs (3.06Ghz Core i3, same video card, same ram, same OS).  Giving the single core affinity solution a shot now.

I have the same problem, starting at the Mage's tower. The hours before that (Ostagar, Elves) didn't give any problems whatsoever. But within 15 mins of when I went to the Circle, the problems started. So far the single core thing seems to help. My specs are easily good enough:

Windows 7-64bit

4GB RAM

Athlon II X4 620 (quadcore @2.6GHz)

Raden HD 5750 1GB

MatchC22, Taedirk, Essayman, can any of you confirm that single core affinity stopped the crashing for you?

Just checking back in, I haven't had a single crash since the night I started changing affinity, and I've played plenty, even after turning everything else that I had disabled back on.

Single core affinity plus reducing the AA seemed to work for me. I have not played more than 2 hours straight, though, since I noticed increasing lag nearing that 2 hour mark. I then just quit and restarted the game.

But it hasn't crashed on me, except when I forgot to set the affinity. Then it took just over an hour to crash (with AA at 4x, I think). So it seems to work.

I must say I find it a rather big flaw that multiple cores would be a problem in this era where multiple cores are so abundant.

I have almost the exact same specs as Cruseydr (have a Radeon 4850 instead) and had gotten to a certain battle that would CTD on me 100% of the time. I'll try setting the affinity to single-core, but will it affect overall visual quality? I currently have the game maxed.

EDIT: Set affinity to dual core instead of triple and game runs crash free now.  How the hell did this not get caught and fixed earlier?

I've been experiencing the same crashes. Just used the task assignment manager to set my exe file on one CPU and I haven't taken any hits to performance, even while maxed and running numerous mods, including HD textures. no crashes so far either.

Win 7 64 bit

i5 quad 3.2

GTS 250

8 gb ram

Game was never optimized for multi core processors?  Lots of tweener games are that way (Empire Total War, for instance)

D.A.O works flawlessly on my system with no crash's what so ever so I donot think its a win 7 64bit or multiple core problem as I am using both specs below:

Win 7 64 Bit

i7 Quad 3.2 Cpu

Gts 250 Graphics

12gb DDR 3 Ram

It may be limited to people with AMD Phenom II processors. MatchC22, what're your specs?

Could definitely be an AMD thing, I have a Phenom 3.

Same problem, running Phenom 3, same path into mage tower = insta gibbing crashes, same solution should've thought of it sooner! It's a common problem this one, Fallout 3 crashing is identical cause and similar solution (you can alter an ini file to achieve the same)

I don't believe it's an AMD-specific problem, either. Almost certainly a multi-core problem. I've experienced frequent CTD's since I entered the Circle tower, and am running on a quad-core Intel processor.

What's more, this is my second playthrough, following a pc upgrade, and before I upgraded my processor, I don't remember DA:O ever crashing.

An interesting note that may not apply to any of you, but my crashing problems ended as soon as I rolled back my soundcard driver. I'm using a Creative SB X-Fi series card, and the latest driver had crashed twice in one day, so I rolled it back, and voila, no crashes from it, or DA:O. I was just able to roll through the entire Mage's tower with not so much as a hint of anything wrong.

Odd, setting affinity to 2 cores still gives me crashes from spell effects. I must have it set to 1 core to prevent crashes.

AMD 3 core Phenom II 720 and windows 7 64bit.

To be honest im a bit disgusted that the problem of the game constantly crashing for so many people has been around for quite some time now with no support from the developers. And, if you contact customer support, their advice is still to cancel all unesessary processes. Which to the best of my knowledge has helped no one at all.
