Yay, Grunt finally has his own thread:O I love Grunt, he is the best thing in the entire game! I really hope that Bioware develops Grunt more and gives him a larger role in ME3. I would also love to be able to romance him, he is such a hottie!!!!

Well, that freudian slip from a while ago tells me you unconsciously love him. :P

Why do I love Grunt so much?

I honestly have no idea.

Krogan are my favourite race somehow, so that's a plus. The reason that I consider him my 'krogan baby' is because he fires up my motherly instincts. He's young, reckless, eager to fight and see the world. He is very loyal, since he considers Shepard his battlemaster. "Shepard is my battlemaster. She has no match." *tears of joy*

Since he's so young, his personality can develop a lot. It's fun to see the young krogan grow up. Grunt is just interesting, and I'm looking forward to raise him in ME3.

^_^

Oh, I've been waiting for a Grunt thread for what seems like forever!

I love Grunt at least in part, because he reminds me of all the insane characters Bioware has done so well, HK-47 and Black Whirlwind come to mind when I hear his gleeful exclamations on the battlefield. He also has a deeper side to him you can explore though his dialogue on the Normandy. The questions about his purpose and the reasons he's alive really got the philosophy geek in me excited.

Because he looks so pitiful when he has a tummy ache. And you want to hold him and say it'll be alright. We'll go kill things when you're better.

Plushie hanar and elcor, courtesy of Citadel Souvenirs. I'm guessing. Or maybe people start sending Shepard gifts. She's a celebrity afterall.

The only thing I dislike about Grunt is his voice. I know this may sound silly, but it's true. I find his voice rather disturbing and ultimately "tasteless". I don't know how to explain it, really.

If he teaches him well (which he probably will) Grunt will become quite a badass. Wrex is exactly what Grunt could use about now, a wise father figure that can show him (reformed) krogan ways and teach him what it takes to unite all clans under one banner.

Awwww, Mama Shepard told him not to eat that turian. Poor guy.

But more to the point: Hurrah, Grunt thread! As might be gathered, I'm a big fan of The Littlest Krogan and think he gets a bum rap on the forums as boring. I'll admit it; the first time I saw the first trailer I just didn't care about him. Oh boy, an "I live to fight" squad mate, I miss Wrex already.

Then I let him out of the tank. Loved him right away. His enthusiasm is hilarious, his confusion endearing (he's discovering consciousness!), his loyalty heart-warming. I want to do right by him over the course of the suicide mission in the way that only returning squadmates and Legion (who chose to find Shepard, rather than getting recruited - and is likewise discovering identity is an emergent property) can normally make me feel - he's like a big loving son whose favorite hobby is "killing mom's enemies". One of my top five squad mates, no question.

To the question of Okeer's intent: My impression is thus: Grunt's genetic lineage was "distilled from Kredak, Moro, Shiagur -" (Uvenk cuts him off, but there may be more) - all Warlords from the time of the Krogan Rebellions. Okeer describes him as a "template" for the renewal of the krogan people from the coddling inflicted on them by the genophage, "one perfect krogan".
Grunt is genetically constructed of the greatest and most legendary of the pre-genophage krogan warlords; krogan who survived, grew, and rose to power because they were mighty, not because they were the only live birth that year. Krogan who lived when the krogan were a name lauded and feared in equal measure. Krogan who survived because they earned the right to. He was to be the first of many, now that Okeer had the initial tests complete, likely females included. An antidote to the species poison of inferior breeders, selected only for ability to survive the genophage. Grunt - and his perfect kin - would pick up the evolution of the krogan where the genophage diverted it down essentially random paths of selection.

Addendum to the above theorizing: Okeer didn't give him biotics because he was never bred to be a battlemaster. Grunt isn't supposed to be one of a kind, but one of thousands.

His enthusiasm is infectious. When he wanted to see Jack tear up the prison ship, he made me want to speed through trying to catch up with her, too. When he does his little fist pump and exclaims everyone gets a turn, that's better than any speech my Shepard could have given to rev up the troops.

Favorite line: Me remembering good deaths. And you with that funny human thing you do.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if Okeer meant Grunt to not only be the perfect genetic specimen of a krogan, but also have the best military training of any krogan. It's not just Grunt being derived from the genetic stock of the great warlords, but also receiving lessons on their military strategy. Better through strength. Better through tactics. Any army of ten Grunts is better than an army of a thousand lesser krogan.

I think that Okeer would have approved of Shepard being Grunt's battlemaster (especially because my Shepards are biotic).  Do you think Okeer would have realized that Grunt would have rejected Okeer's view points?  Do you think Okeer would have cared?

Wrex is different than Grunt. Wrex is not > Grunt. Grunt does not = Wrex. If we're talking about awesomeness of personality, give anyone a thousand years of stories and see what that gets you.

I'm not exactly sure what Okeer's viewpoints were. Grunt says Okeer spent his time on old hatreds, but then Grunt says he hates Turians for what they did. I imagine Okeer felt the same. That sounds like sharing old hatreds to me.

Perhaps Grunt didn't agree with Okeer's view of bringing back the glory days of the krogan. Grunt lives to fight new battles and cares not for what the krogan warlords of the past achieved. He's concerned with what krogans of the present day can achieve. If you click on Grunt's unique dialogue for Tuchanka after he's already done his Rite of Passage, he'll still say it's barely holding together, but then say Clan Urdnot will make it better. Not Clan Urdnot will conquer the galaxy, but that they'll simply make the krogan homeworld better.

ETA: Okay, in my quick cut and paste, I actually posted a sculpture of Wrex when I meant to post an animatronic head of Grunt.

Time for a little more Urdnot Grunt Wrex!
