I recently downloaded Mass Effect from Steam. Every time I try to launch the game, it would crash. It would load the splash screen, but as soon as the monitor blackens, the game would crash, and windows would give a message saying that "Mass Effect has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly." Every time I try a new solution I would get the same problem.
Attempts at solving this issue include
- Unblocking the program from AVG antivirus
- Running Steam, Mass Effect, and Mass Effect Launcher as Administrator
- Updating OpenAL files
- Reinstalling Steam
- Reinstalling Mass Effect from a backup
- Verifying integrity of game cache
- Changing filtering settings in the configuration utility
My laptop (HP G60-458DX) has the following specifications:
Microprocessor: 2.00 GHz Intel Pentium Processor T4200
Microprocessor Cache: 1MB L2 Cache
RAM: 4.00 GB
Memory: 85 GB out of 250 GB of free memory
Video Card: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
Video Memory: Up to 1759 MB
Operating System: Windows 7 64 bit
Can someone please help me with this issue?

The fact that you're running an Intel integrated GPU didn't make you think?

I read that others were able to play ME1 with Intel integrated GPUs. Also, Portal runs smoothly on my machine.

Minimum System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC
(Corrected from dumb, Pie in the Sky lies to the real thing)
Repeating this much (entire thing already included above)
Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 6 series (6800GT or better: 210, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 7600 GS, 8200, 8300, 8400 GS, 8500, 9200, & 9300 are below minimum system requirements)
ATI Radeon X1800 GTO (X1300, X1300 Pro, X1550, HD 2400, HD 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4350, HD 4550, and HD 5450 are below minimum system requirements)
Given the terrible graphics that the OP has, it's a wonder it could do anything at all in this game. If you are having the exact same problem, then it would surprise the heck out of me if your PC's video graphics was actually decent.

Apperantly ME1 cannot run with Admins permission and you cant run things as admin from steam, so just turn of UAC all together

Make up your mind, is it an Intel chipset you are running, or ATI? Either way, you should have paid attention to the system requirements, which clearly state;
Note the Intel chipset is not supported at all, whereas the ATI chipset is supported only in the desktop version.
Laptop versions of these chipsets may work but are unsupported

Win7 isnt officially supported, so it can be hit and miss trying to get it to run. It would be a good idea to download and install DX9.0c from microsofts website, as it is this version that ME requires, and the Steam install isnt reliable in installing it. DX10 or 11 are not backwards compatible enough for ME's needs.

Although win7 isn't officially supported, vista and win7 are so very similar there isn't much difference(besides win7 being 1000x better of course). The 1.02 patch should fix the issue.
Also bogsnot, can't you just run compatibility mode on a steam game, or does the overlay not allow that, just wondering as I have never tried

I dont use Steam, or Win7, so I cant answer that fully. I have read in other posts that you cant run ME1 through Steam in XP compatibility mode. Not sure if there is any truth to that, or if the poster just wasnt sure how.
Turning off UAC did seem to fix it for that poster though.

Mmm, ok. But I can vouch for the fact me1 works on win7, just in my experience with other tech forums and my own, you have to have the 1.02 patch installed or it won't run. I tried the compatibility mode and it didn't work for me. And thanks bogs, I'm going to look around to see if other have tried the steam me1 in compatibility mode
