I'm sure there have been too many questions regarding my problem, but Dragon Age just doesn't want to run at a reasonable fps. I play at 1280x800 (but in most cases the lowest possible) resolution with high textures, and medium graphics, and the game runs about 5 frames per second, or at least choppy enough that I have no desire to play the game at all.
I run a late 2008 Unibody Macbook, with 2.4 Dual Core, 4gb RAM, 45gb free space, and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M. I understand many people on the forums say 9400M is too low a system spec, but I read somewhere else that this game is supposed to run beautifully. Even the Direct2Drive staff claimed that I shouldn't have any major hiccups in gameplay.
Guess I'm just stuck with kotor, with a patch that improves graphical performance at the cost of frequent game crashes.

You might be able to run this game with these settings relatively smoothly under Windows, but under MacOS X that's impossible. Partly because Apple's OpenGL implementation could be faster, mainly because Cider causes a severe performance hit on lower spec Macs (which includes your MacBook). Set everything to "low", choose a lower resolution. Seriously.

I run it at native resolution on my much older MBP with the GForce 8600 GT. I had to dumb down the graphics a tad, but it's very playable.
If I were you I would turn off all third-party preference panes, or exclude DA from them if possible. Try rebooting and holding down the shift key when you log in. It might help free up system resources by turning off log-in items.

sorry for being a little late on the reply. apparently (maybe due to a half-finished bootcamp), my hard drive space freed up from 40gb to around 80gb. 1024x768 with textures set to medium. in places like the deep roads or the dalish camp, things are reasonable, but when it comes to places like denerim or ostagar (especially), I encounter plenty of slowdown (10fps i assume). Naturally, the freer hard drive space makes things seem more smoother, or it can just be a psychological trick on my part.

The 9400 is junk compared to an 8600. One was an actual game-capable card when new. The other was never intended for games. It's very simple. Upgrade to something worth having.
