I keep getting any out of memory error when I try to load a saved file into the toolset.
I have an AMD Phenom 9500, Vista Home Premium, 3gigs RAM, GeForce 9800 GT.
I know I 'only' have 3gigs of RAM, but since the game runs with barely a hitch at near full tilt, is that really the problem? I don't have the ability to load a save file of a game that runs perfectly?

On my system, there's some text at the bottom of the editor window which says something like Toolset Memory Usage 2.23GB. Sorry to say, you may need to add some RAM to your system.

The toolset takes up 2.23GB so you're probably going to have to add some RAM.

Editing requires a lot more resources then playing. I would hazard to guess you will want no less then 4GB RAM and could probably utilize up to 8GB.

Yeah, I ran into a similar problem yesterday. The toolset said it was using about 2GB and my laptop only has 3GB, running Windows Vista.
Oddly enough, my desktop only has 2GB and XP, but the toolset only uses about 1GB on it.

I have the same issue. I used to be able to load all save game files and then one day for no reason it just decides not to work. :\\

If you have at least 4GB of RAM and a 64-bit OS to put it to use you can try this.
If not, you're out of luck for now.
I've managed to make an alternative "editor" for my own use but it's far less user-friendly than Bioware's and currently it still messes up some things, so it's really not an option.

I have used the toolset without any problems till now, but when I installed Awakening, I get this problem. And I have 2 GB RAM, Windows XP SP3. Again, I managed to use the toolset perfectly before Awakening, so it's not about the RAM in my case, or then it oddly decided that it matters all of a sudden.

Basically 95+% of the savegame file is made of the list of areas you have visited and everything they contain : creatures, items, placeables etc... The list just keeps growing as you visit new places and areas are never removed from the file, even if you can't access them any longer. So the size of the file keeps growing and by the time you start awakening you're still carrying around your origin story, ostagar, the party camp etc...
The toolset starts running out of memory around 7Mb files, an endgame save can reach twice that. So it's no wonder that when you import a character into awakening, it quickly exceeds the toolset's capacity.
I've been able to open awakening saves in the toolset with a new warden (I'm on XP 32bits too so no workaround for me), so it's not awakening, it's just the size of the file.
Now about that thing I mentioned 6 days ago, I've managed to fix the "breaking things up", and it seems to be doing just fine, except it's really not practical to use for anyone but the person who made it. Do you want to give it a try ?
EDIT: There or there, instructions inside. If you try it, let me wish you good luck and don't hesitate to ask if you run into problems.

This is an error that Bioware has known about for months. From what I remember, its team was surprised that a bug in the program was causing the editor's need for RAM to expand dramatically when a save file reached a certain size. But don't hold that as gospel. Anyhow, I'm surprised this problem hasn't been fixed by now.

It hasn't been fixed by now. And my save files are very small, 13mb. Still I get out of memory on this program only, Windows 7 64bit.
