So I read in another thread that if you have high enough cunning, you dont need to invest many points in lockpicking and coercion. Is that true? If it is true, anyone know how much cunning one needs to be able to accomplish that?
It would be very nice to safe those points and put them in something else like stealth or other nice areas.
My guess is, you might need 1 point in coercion and 1 point in lockpicking, then have high enough cunning to be able to coerce and open chests and stuff?
Thanks for the help.

Every skill in Deft Hands/Improved Tools/Mechanical Expertise/Device Mastery acts as a +10 in cunning (so +10/another +10/another +10/and another +10 for a total of +40), these only act towards lockpicking and trap disarming.
I remember reading somewhere that with a cunning of 60 or so you could open every chest in the world (not sure though), so any combination of skills would work for that (ex. 20 cunning and Device Mastery (+40), or 40 cunning and Improved Tools (+20))
For Coercion: "Each coercion skill is worth an additional 25 points - a certain number of total points is required to successfully coerce a character in conversation. (dragon age wiki http://dragonage.wik...m/wiki/Coercion). I can't really find how strength/cunning influences these scores though, might be 1 point cunning=+1 point 'persuading', but seeing as you have no way of knowing how hard the persuasion is going to be I usually max coercion.
[edit] minor mistake in my examples, apparantly Device Mastery would require 22 cunning before you could take it

If I remember correctly, if Leli has
Traps 2
Dev mastery 3
CUN 24
and some levelups from gifts, it's enough to disarm any trap in the game, especially those in the Brecilian ruins for the dragon battle. As well, with those stats she can open the important chests you come across (those that hold gifts for party members), although she won't be able to open every chest in the game.
As far as coercion goes, I basically think it's a waste of points. You can keep the 2nd merchant in Lothering without it, do Valena's quest in Redcliffe without it, get the dwarf in Redcliffe to fight without it, and pretty much every other quest in the game.
In Orzammar coercion does make a difference in Dusttown for some coin and in the Proving for the love letters but by that time you could be rolling in money anyway if you wanted to, and getting Harrowmont's friends to fight is not necessary to complete that quest.
I think the coercion skill is mostly for players who want to experience the different cutscenes after having played through the game a number of times but I never bother with it anymore, unless I'm role playing and the character's persona demands it.

With enough Cunning, you could go without a single point in Coercion or the Deft Hands tree. However, you wouldn't really be able to everything as soon as it shows up. There will be a number of chests you actually have to wait and come back for, because your level won't be high enough to get them open. Assuming, of course, that the chest isn't in a random encounter location that you'll never be able to come back to.
The advantage to the Deft Hands tree is that you use a single Talent Point to do in one level what would have taken 4 levels to do. The advantage to the Coercion skill is that you use a single Skill Point to do what would have taken you 9 levels to do (each point in Coercion is worth 25 Cunning).
Can you go through the game without putting points into Coercion or Deft Hands? Yes. However, you can get better results sooner if you put even a single point into each tree. I generally put in 2 points, then leave the rest to my Cunning score.

I just pulled up Discobird's Rogue Mechanics thread to double-check my numbers. Each rank in Deft Hands is worth 10 points. You can see it here:

The higher your coercion the more money you can earn, up to 100G extra over the course of the game.

For every 25 points above 10 in cunning, that is 1 less point in coercion you need. With 60 cunning, you only need 2 points in Coercion.
For every 10 points above 30 in cunning, that is 1 less point in lockpicking you need. With Deft Hands and 60 cunning, you can pick every lock in the game.
Some combinations...
Max Persuasion
110 cunning, 0 persuasion
85 cunning, 1 persuasion
60 cunning, 2 persuasion
35 cunning, 3 persuasion
10 cunning, 4 persuasion
Max Lockpicking
70 cunning, 0 lockpicking
60 cunning, 1 lockpicking
50 cunning, 2 lockpicking
40 cunning, 3 lockpicking
30 cunning, 4 lockpicking

This is only really useful if you can Respec your character as obviusly you will lose out on alot of things by not taking those skills earlier when you have low cunning at the start of the game.
