Technically, as long as you have Pinnacle Station, there is unlimited XP.
Personally, I've never gotten any higher than Level 56 on a single playthrough. Mind you, this is the result of:
1. ...doing all of the side quests, including one of the alignment side quests
2. ...completing all quests on Pinnacle Station, but without grinding for XP
3. ...completing Bring Down the Sky, and the related subquest(s)
4. ...unlocking/hacking all terminals and containers encountered on all quests and side quests
5. ...wittling thresher maws and Geth Armatures/Colossus' down with the Mako and finishing them off on foot
There is one condition, however:
1. On my more recent playthroughs, I intentionally ignore any "Anomaly," "Debris," resource sample site, and anything else found on a planetary or star system map that is not quest-related. Even if I pass by it during or on the way to a quest, or mistakenly click on the wrong planet, I ignore it. What can I say? I'm OCD as all get out, and I hate having open quests/missions in my journal, but I no longer have the patience to complete the UNC Collections missions. I would just as soon make another run-through than go through that crap, if I have that strong of a craving for extra XP.

Doing everything that there is to do and getting the maximum amount of experience possible from quests (bring the sky down - pinnacle station included) and killing outside the mako, I got to lvl 58. It was quite frustrating getting towards the end and realizing It wasn't gonna be enough.

It's not possible. You can get to 57 or 58 that is it. There is no infinite xp aside from a couple of save/reload tricks. Though that's not really a reason to dig up a 3 year old thread.

But now that it is up I can comment on it!The Grey Ranger wrote...

With no DLC the highest I have gotten is 57... that is with glitching Paragon / Renegade to get both missions and killing all units with Mako.... and pretty much unlocking everything, getting all the minerals.
It is pretty tight though, you hit 57 on the Citadel IIRC.

In my very first playthrough I topped 50 in Virmire, doing Pinnacle And BDtS. Then, with the achievements, I reached lvl 60 in the second one also in Virmire, but this time without Pinnacle (mind you that in the first time I did most of the mining part, and in the second one I searched for all of them
).
And without any XP glitches, no killing inside the Mako (which was fun and hell at the same time for me. This is the first game of this type I play... in my life! Squeaking at some Turrets, Colossus Geth and one or other Husk that managed to come too close sure amused people around here).
So yep, I guess that in one playthrough you can only get to 57/58 as said and proven here :/

I'd be careful with xp glitches. Two out of three times I've tried it BEFORE I reached level 50 (I believeI leveled up 20 levels once on Therum) it capped me at 50 even though I've long since unlocked level 60.
