Hello,
I just bought Mass Effect 2 on Steam but I can't get the game to save my progress. Each time I try to save a game, when I hit the Load option the game I just saved is not there.
I've checked the "Auto Save" option but even after completing the first "tutorial" part (before meeting the Illusive Man), there is no saved data.
I believe the problem is that my "My Documents" folder is on a different drive (not in C:).
Any help will be very welcomed! I really want to play this game...
Thanks!
Mass Effect 2 not saving progress on Steam

OK, so I managed a way to make the game save files, but the thing is that only the AutoSave funtion is working. When I try to save a game manually, the saved game slot does not appear when trying to load it, but I am able to resume my game when I close the game.
I checked the save folder (My Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save) and there is only one file: Save_0001.pcsav
I checked the "GamerSettings.ini" file that I guess contains all the settings for the game (it's located in "My Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\BIOGame\\Config" and I believe there is something missing in the file. The section that is named "SaveGames" is empty, like:
[SaveGames]
Location=
So, the question is: Should I put something there manually? Or is there someething that is supposed to be there?
Thanks in advance!

That could very well be it, as my GamerSettings.ini has the save directory under the [SaveGames] heading as "Location=C:\\Documents and Settings\\*myname*\\My Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Save"
Throw it in and see if it works.

Great man! I added the path to the Mass Effect 2 folder in My Documents and now I can save games! Thanks MachDelta for the help!
All the saving issue seems to be resolved, but now there is another problem, but not sure if it's a problem or not. When I save my progress, a new game slot is created, but when I try to Load a game, the list of saved games are not shown. However, it shows me a blank list named "All Characters", with a button "Select Career" or something like that.
It seems to me that when I try to load a game, it's actually asking me for a specific character that I created. Are the characters saved in the same folder structure as the saved games? Or do I have to save the character in the game itself? I checked the GamerSettings.ini file but there is nothing there that hints me to another save path.
I guess the question is How do you load a game from a previous saved game?
Thanks in advance!

I'm doubtful the [SaveGames] setting will actually help you. I thought it looked promising too, but you'll note it's actually pointing to Mass Effect 1's save directory, not 2's. 2 has practically the same path except it's a \\Mass Effect 2\\ directory instead of just \\Mass Effect\\ I assume this line is intended to point the ME2 config utility to your import/export saves from ME1, not to tell it where to look for ME2 saves.
kronkhal, I believe you're correct that ME2 is bugging out because of your My Documents folder not being on C:. Question: Is your My Documents folder a directory on another drive, or is it the actual root of the drive? I've read that having My Documents be the root directory of a partition can particularly drive it crazy, and that if you're willing to move it all again so that it's an actual My Documents folder, that may actually solve the problem by itself.

About the Save Games folder, I used the "Mass Effect 2" name instead of just "Mass Effect". I thought MachDelta got a misprint there. so I changed it.
About the My Documents folder, mine is the root of a drive, i.e. the drive (let's say D:) does not contain a "My Documents" folder, but all the documents themselves. I don't know if moving the folders is actually a good idea, since I have other games already installed and that are working just fine.
I'm just wondering about the "Load" screen (when you're in the paused screen, where the "Squad" button is). I'm not sure what should I have there. I thought it had a list of Saved Games, but the title "All Characters" is weird. So I wonder how to load previous saved games.
Thanks for the advice Kloreep...

In my experience, hitting Load puts me right in the list of saves for the last career I was using. If it takes you straight to "All Characters" and doesn't show any options but that when you hit Select Career, then yes, something is wrong.
I'm afraid I have no recommendations but to tell Windows to move your whole My Documents folder structure into a real D:\\\\My Documents\\\\ folder . :/ That's the only solution I've seen for ME2's inability to handle a root directory My Documents.
If your other games are relying on Windows to tell it where My Documents is located - like they should if they put their stuff in there - it shouldn't be a problem, but of course I can't guarantee anything. You might end up needing to edit some of those games' .inis or registry entries.

I think I'll go for it and move my My Documents into an actual folder instead of the root drive. I believe I can always go back if something goes terrible wrong... :S
In any case, before doing anything, I'm pasting the contents of my GamerSettings.ini file so someone (who doesn't have the same problem as I do) can compare it and see if something's missing. Obviously, some settings will be different (if not all) but I just want to be sure my .ini file has the similar settings as everybody else. I feel like there is a path missing to tell the game where to put the "Character Careers" files.
Anyways, here it is:
[SystemSettings]
Resolution=_800x600
ResX=1920
ResY=1080
BorderlessWindow=False
Fullscreen=True
QualityBloom=True
DynamicShadows=False
LightEnvironmentShadows=True
MaxCharacterCinematicLightingPasses=3
EnableLightEnvSHLights=True
MotionBlur=True
FilmGrain=True
[SaveGames]
Location=Z:\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save
[AppCompat]
MeasuredCPUScore=304.378082
CompatLevelComposite=3
CompatLevelCPU=5
CompatLevelGPU=3
GPUVendorID=4098
GPUDeviceID=26814
CPUNumLogicalProcessors=2
I know I'm asking for a lot, but I don't want to go and change the my My Documents folder without first trying something easier.
Thanks again Kloreep for the advice.

So I'll guess I'll try changing the My Documents location.
I wonder why your Resolution value matches your ResX and ResY values, but mine doesn't. Anyways, let's see how it goes.

I did the change, but it didn't work, sort off. Now at least each time I start the game it doesn't ask me for my EA UserID and PWD.
But I have the feeling that I need to reinstall the game to make it work. However, I'll need to reconfigure more things that I was expecting, so I guess I'll have to wait until I reformat my computer... Then I'll put the "My Documents" folder in its default location so I don't have any more problems with this game or any other game (I had problems with Borderlands too, but fixed it quite easily).
Thanks again for the help.

same problem here. Do I need my default my documents to be C:/ or can I still keep my documents where it is if I install ME2 on the same drive?

Needs to be the default C: location. There are a few "fixes" floating around that you can try. Do a google search and you should stumble across them.

this fixed it for me. I had my documents as the root folder. I changed it to e:/my documents and now it works. Thanks for the help

Just technically curious:
Does anyone know if it's a Windows System Protection thing (not being able to save certain things in the root directory) or a file/directory limit?
There used to be a low number limit (512?) of files or directories that could be created in the root drive, but that was a way long time ago. Not sure what the limit is now...
