or a critic on any other medium.

Poll!

We all know the world is full of "X is bad. No it isn't." "Y is better. No it isn't." and so on but has any of those EVER influenced your decision to try a game, read a book, or watch a movie that you were already going to (or not) before you read or heard some other person's comments about it?

If something is getting universal praise, does it make you feel left out of the action, as it were, if you haven't tried it yet?

Or if a lot of people think something is bad, does it make you feel embarrassed or guilty for liking it?

No, this is not sarcasm or a rhetoric question, I'm actually trying to recall if my own plans were ever changed from reading something on the internet or a review in a magazine or on TV or even word-of-mouth from a friend.. I wonder if someone else's have?

People on this furom recomended Kotor to me and I bought it and I don't regret it. I just hate it how Bioware copped out of doing voices for all the characters, and just gave the aliens a different language...

No no, I mean something you already had your opinion of :P not recommendations for new discoveries.

I will heed word of mouth from trusted friends who share my taste. Otherwise I prefer following my own instincts or trying out something firsthand before making a judgment call.

What you like is wrong!

Consider your opinion changed. :wizard:

Yes. Not an opinion about a game, or movie. But my opinion about people. Before signing up here, i never believed in "internet friendship".

Thanks to some of my friends, my opinion is changed and now i believe :)

Before I really got into the internet, I thought Halo 3 was pretty much the best game on the 360, next to some other games I personally liked.
When I visited various forums however, I've noticed several people say that the game is either overated, or it sucks. For a while, I felt kind of bad for even thinking that Halo 3 was great.Posted Image Later though, I learned that everyone is entitled to thier own opinion, and that what other people say shouldn't have anything to do with my personal experience with the game.
So yeah, I still think Halo 3 is a pretty good game, I admit it! Although after expanding my horizons a bit, I've noticed there really are games that are better than it.... Posted Image

I have changed my opinions by having discussions with people several times. Some times I found out I was outright misinformed and had a 180 degree shift in my position, others I was just missing some pieces of info and my stance was enriched by adding some more information/contradicting views/other input

For example I had always been suspicious of Google as working with them they just seemed as a dodgy company. I found out online about their books fiasco and that cemented my take

Another one is that I used to misunderstand the impact of violent games in our minds, and following a rather heated debate with a psychologist/psychiatrist in a forum (and many many quotes, links and books later) I actually got the hand of just how influential games are in our minds, and how the argument against violence is flawed but should be fixed (as there is an impact and we should care about it) and the arguments about child pornography -of any kind- are actually scarily valid.

It takes a lot of hard evidence to get me to change my mind, but it's possible.

This for sure.  Although,  I tend to make my own mind up.   Those that set themselves up as gaming or movie critics, get a brief glance, in my case.     I tend to research things if I think I want something ..a book, a movie, a game.

Later on I usually read people's opinions "on the internet" but thats mostly for entertainment value.    hehe

Sometimes, from trusted sources.

experiencing the idiotic acts is idiot!

and those who have high knowledge of a science or a subject may convince me if they show me enough evidence and they must have good intention. my opinions about a country or someone ... but no one can convince me that Kung Fu is not good ! or Rape is good !!!

Close friends can sway my decisions to watch something, read something, or play something. Usually I'll go along with it just to see if I have the same opinion of whatever it is after I've seen it.

I don't take one public opinion as the sole truth, I research extensively and take several different opinions to paint a picture of whether I will like something or not. Or I'll just try it anyways and form my own opinion.

Good! I, personally, think there's nothing wrong with Halo 3 except the userbase. Had good fun playing it when I had it :)

As for me, yes. It happens quite often and I'm always learning new things. Sure, some opinions don't change, but others do.

It's happened before, but it takes some actual evidence to change my opinion.

For example...we've all heard of the lady that sued McDonalds because her coffee was hot? Well, Eventually, I found out that the lawsuit wasn't that the coffee was hot, the lawsuit was that the coffee was so hot that when she spilled it, she had to get skin grafts and 2 years of medical treatment. Originally she was awarded one dollar for every complaint McDonalds had about it being too hot...but when it became apparent that the amount was obscene (nearly 3 million), the court reduced it dramatically.

As a side note, McDonalds (and other chains) policy is to serve coffee at over 180 degrees Fahrenheit, or 85 degrees Celsius. If you were to spill said coffee in your lap, you would have 3rd degree burns in a matter of seconds. I know that every time I've gotten Starbucks, I've had to either let the coffee sit for half an hour, or put a ton of creamer in.

This court case, DoN?.

Just a case of "I made a mistake, I can't admit it, let's sue someone". I think something very similar happened in the UK and it was thrown out of court, but I could be wrong.
