Is it really that big a deal? I have friends that have said its stupid and that Jen Hale can't act (disagree) and that there is no gameplay differences or dialogue and that everyone knows that Shep is male.

I don't understand the question. FemShep is cool though. She has some unique dialogues, but overall is the same

No, it's not that big a deal and nobody apart from your friends ever made that claim. In fact, I'm willing to bet a good portion of the males on these boards use femsheps.

I use a male Shepard predominantly, but it really just comes down to a matter of preference. It pisses me off to no end when the "Meer/Hale is an awful/fantastic voice actor" arguments start up, which I fear is inevitable.

I play female Shepard since Mass Effect 1. I enjoy her voice and acting, not sure about npcs reactions since I haven't played Male Shepard much.

I play as Femshep more than male shep. In all my rpg style games i play as female. its just somthing different, i think it's cool when the hero or whatever is a girl.

Since when is it a problem for a male to play as a female character?

Ahh, these threads are always fun. Sooner or later, we'll get some yahoo saying playing girl characters as a male makes you "fruity" and a 20+ page argument will ensue.

The romances obviously are the big difference. Other than that, not much different other than voice inflections and appearance.

I always play as Male, but that's because I identify with a male more, being one and all. I started a new ME1/ME2 playthrough not long ago as male and am planning my first female once they are complete.

If anything makes me fairly excited to play Femshep, it's her face/head. Male Sheperd I absolutely love the default face/head so I never change it, and since they use it in trailers and whatnot, it makes it feel more "right" to play with. They don't do this with femshep, so I can finally customize a little.

Female renegade is always more fun for me. But I have to agree on the acting comment. Hale had great performance in ME but in ME2 it's monotone as hell. Every single line sounds the same with that "wannabe badass gut voice".

I use the default Shepard; He has a good voice, He looks better than the customize options, and I'm not a fan of the female Shepard's voice. Some make fun of me for using the default, Who cares? Play as the Shepard you want to.

No, it's completely true. If a man plays a female shepherd, within a few months or so his voice will shift upwards roughly half an octave, won't need to shave, and will become concerned about whether his shirt matches the rest of his outfit. On the plus side, he'll stop and ask directions if he gets lost driving around.

I had a similar experience after my BoyShep run-- I'd throw dirty clothes in the middle of the bedroom floor, leave the dishes in the sink in the hopes they would clean themselves, and explained to the world at large how I would have done any given athletic thingee had I been the one playing on that professional team. Fortunately, two FemShep runs later, I lost any urge to crush old beer cans on my forehead.

i think both shepards are fine, but i can only play as a male, but thats only because i find it weird playing as a female i customized out of nowhere, and it is hard to play as female for some reason. and plus, i made my shepard to look like me and have a nice look with mark meer. so win for me! (...right?)

You left out one part though.  He will suddenly start nagging about anything and everything.:P

I have a faily deep voice... though I do paint my nails and look at the clothes when I watch fashion shows. My gods! I think it's too late!

Part of the point to an rpg is making it your own. *MY* Shepard is female and always will be. I have a very difficult time playing the character as a male - as it never feels like Shepard. I have to admit I'm a little disappointed that the default for the promo vids and the like is always male - same as Dragon Age. Me, I like female protagonists and feel they are given the short shift way too often.

Your friends' opinions were invalidated when they claimed Mark Meer to be a better VA than Jen Hale.

^This. Jennifer Hale rocks. So much. She's an excellent voice actress. I'm playing paragon, but her renegade lines are one of the best things in ME ^_^
