And why does everyone "know" Shepard is a man? That's just silly, the female option has been there from the beginning.

Because Shepard IS a Man, Soldier. John Shepard, Born on Earth, Survivor of the Akuze, Badass. :) That's the canonical Shepard. He appears in every trailer, commercials, box covers - everywhere. Even in ME1 - when you choose your character, you have three options:
a) - John Shepard (Canonical)
B) - Enter New Character (Your own)
c) - Select Existing ID

...Simple...

You're referring to the commercial default; the face of the franchise if you will.
There is nothing canon about him.
Why is Shepard never referred to by sex or first name in the novels?
No canon.
Why is the player free to choose Shepard's gender?
No canon.
Why is Mass Effect such an enjoyable and intimate experience?
No canon.

And actually, you can choose to "quick start" as either gender. There isn't simply a preset with Sheploo.

The canon thus far has specified no gender.

They market Male Shepard primarily (if not exclusively), but that matters squat. Take a look at KOTOR II. They marketed the male exile PC primarily, but the canon was a female exile.

Since this has devolved into a Hale vs Meer war somewhat, I'll post my opinion on the matter. Meer sounds like a normal person in his everyday lines, like with crew and NPCs, but puts just the right amount of emotion into the lines that should have them. Every line shouldn't be all dramatic and soap opera-esque, which is what people who think he sounds monotone must believe. Hale just sounds like she puts weary sighs into every line, even the basic, everyday lines. Think Kif from Futurama.

That said, I think Hale has her moments, but overall, Meer sounds more like a person and not someone acting a role. Kind of like the distinction between someone reading aloud and being able to tell that they are reading off of a card.

Anyway, more on topic, it's not that weird to play opposite genders in games, even if you have the choice to play your own gender. I almost always play through RPGs at least once as a female, despite having mainly male characters. And really, in most games (this one included) the game does not play out that much differently with a female than it does with a male. There's a few different snippets of dialogue and different romance options, but otherwise the story is gender-neutral. People put too much importance on gender in playing their games.

And for those who talk about staring at asses, unless you're playing around with the camera, you can't really see Shepard's ass (especially in combat), so that's kind of a moot point. You spend time staring at Shepard's back, not ass.

personally your friends need to grow up. if you are fine with playing a femshep go for it. im not going to get into a debate as to which voice actor is better as its very subjective. i personally dont like the malesheps voice as its far to monotone for me but the default male shepard is far more detailed than can be created.

personally i cant play with a male sheppard past the second mission, but i have no issues with the femshep voice, as to which is canon? i tend to think the default male shep is the canon one. but to me in my game experience its my own femshep thats canon. i applaud bioware for allowing players to make their own canon character throughout the series if they desire

The devs have already stated that there is no 'canon' Shepard, but they also talk through their hats, calling Shepard 'predefined' when it suits their Marketing purposes (i.e.: no gayz plz kthnx). In any case, it doesn't matter, because as far as I'm concerned the mythical Canon Shepard can go jump in a lake. I've got a whole posse of Non-Canon Shepards to keep me busy. Young pups who want to beat their chests about manly Renegade Shepard can join CanShep in the lake.

There's nothing wrong with playing as a woman, because most games don't allow the choice, so you're almost always stuck with male protagonists.

The exceptions, usually were inferior games, until Tomb Raider got that reboot with Tomb Raider Legends and became an actual good gaming series. Well, Underworld is probably a bit more debatable.

Point is, sexuality is fleeting and playing as your opposite gender is an enlightening experience, not a condemning one. If your friends speak against you for it, I suggest you ask your friends why they like to stare at flat mens butts all day.

I like femshep but Bioware should give her more attention. Come on, this is the 21st Century. Default male Shep is much more detailed and he shows up in all the trailers and on every screenshot/poster/boxart. How hard is it to make two trailers, one for femshep and one for maleshep? And what about the screenshots and boxart? It's unfair and Bioware hasn't changed anything so far, nor have they replied to it. Even the woman who's behind femshep's voice has said that she wants femshep to receive more attention.

Hopefully Bioware has the guts to give more attention to femshep in ME3.

Since when is it a problem for a male to play as a female character?

R U Kiddin?  You're a wrastling fan.  You know the "Nature Boy" wouldn't go for that.:D
WOOOOOO!

The Nature Boy wouldn't but Gold Dust wouldn't mind. ;)

As for the topic. I have 5 male shepards and 4 femsheps that I've finished ME1 with on 360. I'm about to finish the game on PC for the first time with a male shep. I have one ore male shep and two fem sheps plan for my PC playthroughs.

This discution make me remember about Kotor.

In kotor 2 the hero of Kotor 1 is refered as a woman, i'm sure that most of male player made their Revan as a man.

I think Bioware always saw Shepard as a man (typical badass amerincan marine), that's why his designe is unique, you can't make it from other kind of face.

Femshep as no unique designe since you can make the same from customisation.

Anyway, i finished ME 1&2 3 time each and always as a femal. I tried to play a mal but... i can't, i don't like his look (i'm a not a fan of military haircut).

Plus, i think to play Shepard a femal give the character more charisme :

She show she get the job done and nobody complain about her sex, it give her credibility in her leadership and make this woman more intresting than a typical male badass that you can find in 99% in video games.

And for Ashley, even if i like her nature, she is too typical military woman, big mouth / action / kicking ass. FemShep is more tempered, seeing the big picture.

Anyway, it's still a RPG so Bioware was smart enough to let Shepard the possibility to be a woman.

So who care what you play if every people can play their Shepard the way they like.

As Sian said, Bioware has been a little lazy on the whole visual customization aspect in Mass effect 2. The face generator is a joke - sorry but its true. Its really hard to get a distinct and aesthetically pleasing Shepard. They are by no means the only dev struggling with this. I would highly value more customization in ME3. I think most gamers would. Shep is well fleshed out with the various origin stories he/she has. Now they need to follow through with the rest.

From a role-playing perspective, I have a male Shepard with whom I identify (being male myself).

I also DO have 2 female Shepards I use to explore alternatives to the story. Being male, I don't identify with them but they're much more pleasant to look at than my male Shepard...Image IPB So playing with my female Shepards is more like watching a movie: I'm watching the sexy heroine kick a*s, whereas when I play my "canon" male Shepard I'm the one kicking a*s.

I'm hoping Legendary Picture will release 2 versions of their ME movie: one with maleShep and one with femShep. They did something like that with "Clue" with 3 different endings, after all... and if the movie's any good, people will enjoy watching the 2 versions.

@ Bottledwater :Tall, Fat, Short, Slim Shepard..Man, you're boring... try to enjoy with what you have. Besides, it would look kinda funny. "Big, Fat Shepard - Soldier, Savior of the Galaxy, Hero of the Alliance" That would suck...
P.S. MaleShepard is a badass either as a Paragon and Renegade.

well shepard would clearly have to be fit, hes a soldier. i meant other NPCs, the ones that dont fight. there were plenty in both games, from merchants to bartenders to newsmen.

Truth be told I think they initially design the story with a male Shepard in mind but try to keep it neutral enough that it would work for a female Shepard in mind. The most blatant example of this is how Jacob is handled. He makes a really poor LI with some of the lines he has outside of the romance that makes you really question what a fem shepard sees in him as a love interest. But those lines work fine for a male shepard who is a friend to Jacob.

The Jacob romance is all about what Shepard literally sees. It's pretty obviously about lust. The lines he has IN the romance are far worse and questionable than the lines outside of it.

Oh no doubt about it, but those lines outside it made me question why I was going through the Jacob romance with one of my fem Shepards.  Needless to say, I decided to skip it and go to Thane's romance instead and watch the Jacob romance on Youtube.  I really don't think I missed much. Image IPB

I played as male shepard 1st and subsequently as femshep just for the eye candy. I don't play either one as if I'm the character. It's still 3rd person so I'm not as engaged in it as some people. 1st person to me is more personable.

To OP, I am a male primarily using a Femshep. Femshep for the win!!!!!! Aside from Liara, you-know-who that dances in your cabin, and Archangel, she is kinda screwed in terms of love interests, but this is purely from my point of view.

See how I did that without using spoilers. lol
