Is it really that big a deal? I have friends that have said its stupid and that Jen Hale can't act (disagree) and that there is no gameplay differences or dialogue and that everyone knows that Shep is male.

There are few male humans in world who seem to have some gender problems. They are like some primeval apes, who think be mans are all about  banging they hairy chests. Same happen when they watch movies, if the main hero is female, they think the movie is bad.

It's totally fine to play ANY gender in ANY games. It's called ROLEPLAING.

I am a male... but have 2 agree with you regarding the above statement, these is no big deal in playing as a female character in ME2 or any other game. Take Lara Croft for example, these is no even a male character in that games but still most of the guys are love to play it.

jennifer hale has much better voice acting in me2. the male voice is too rushed,

femshep only really works if you do renegade tho, voice acting at right for her on paragon

No, it's completely true. If a man plays a female shepherd, within a few months or so his voice will shift upwards roughly half an octave, won't need to shave, and will become concerned about whether his shirt matches the rest of his outfit. On the plus side, he'll stop and ask directions if he gets lost driving around.

I've been playing with female characters for years and none of that has happened. Stupid ability to be able to tell the difference between a game and reality... :pinched:

It really hurts imersion, you know :P

Oh yes :o

Of course at the first smart remark, the first one would run away screaming, and the second and third ones would shoot me

I'm a male who plays exclusively maleshep... but, there's nothing wrong with playing as the opposite sex, it's all a matter of choice.

I always felt if you don't play these games twice, one male and female run, and one paragon and renegade run, your not experiencing mass effect fully.

I'm surprised the post I quoted above didn't get any commentary. I agree 110,000%. I also like to play (and when I say "play" I always mean all the way through) at least one character of each class. Only thing slowing me down (other than real life) is of course ..... I'm currently doing the same in Dragon Age;)

I had a similar experience after my BoyShep run-- I'd throw dirty clothes in the middle of the bedroom floor, leave the dishes in the sink in the hopes they would clean themselves, and explained to the world at large how I would have done any given athletic thingee had I been the one playing on that professional team. Fortunately, two FemShep runs later, I lost any urge to crush old beer cans on my forehead.

First good laugh of the day.

I need to decorate my place, I guess I should do a couple femshep runs.

People need to grow some and not care what others think of them. Only you can decide who let influence your behavior. You shouldn't give a damn what anyone says about you playing some video game character. It doesn't define you. Teenagers man.

I play with a female shepard all the time and I'm part of the male section of the human race. I also am attracted to women and not men. I also have dreams of my female shepard saving me from burning buildings and.......... maybe I shouldn't told you that part.

I am male and play as male. Its fun playing as a female but Its easier for me to identify with the male shep. Mostly because of romances.

I'm the same way on that last bit.  I play females far  more often than not, but romances are always kind of... weird for me to do when playing Femshep (or any female character in an RPG).

This discution make me remember about Kotor.
In kotor 2 the hero of Kotor 1 is refered as a woman, i'm sure that most of male player made their Revan as a man.

In KOTOR 2 there was a dialogue where you could set Revan's gender to be male or female.

It was about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the face, but most of the more-intellectual-than-thou RPG fans missed it completely.  Image IPB

I actually found that amusing. It is clear in KotoR 2 that the preferred results of each game were to have a Female Revan and a Male Exile, yet officially those genders are reversed.

How old are your friends, OP? I mean no offense to you asking it: just, you know. Teenagers and early twenties sometimes do that, from what I imagine (as a female, I went through a few years where my friends were all OMG THAT'S WRONG that I played video games and table top rpgs at all). Eventually, they'll likely get over it, or you'll learn to completely tune out the trash they say because they're still a friend, or... you'll drop them if they're immature jerks. Ya know.

I think both voice actors are good: some do individaul lines better, but I couldn't even say 'one is better renegade/one is better paragon' because I think they both have stand-out lines throughout it. I think there are quite a few little parts in each game they each sex gets that are cool- no big differences, but flirts and comments that just make the experience more real.

Play what you want. :)

Shame that:

- one the most usefull armor leg pieces, Life Support Webbing, don't show it

- it's the same model from maleShep, so you're looking a guys butt

- you look at her back in ME2

If you want to really look a nice ass, try Soldier femShep in the first game with Colossus Armor.
Now, that's a very beautifull piece of meat. ;)

my first playthrough as a femshep in me2 i got told to try out as a stripper. i thought that was great until i realized that it was the only real difference in non-romance dialogue.

I always play both genders to see how differently characters react to a male or female hero. I seem to have the same problem as you though. The romances for female characters make me feel uncomfortable. The way I deal with it is to basically envision my female characters love interest as me. Makes it feel less weird. Well except for the femshep/Garrus romance I'm not going to take ownership of Garrus' humorous awkwardness :D

With Mass Effect it's not a big deal. It's a third person narrative, so the player characters are pre-defined. From this vantage point, it's like playing Fahrenheit/The Indigo Prophecy. The character is there already, you just guide it through. Doesn't matter much if she's female or male. Personally, I prefer a male Shepard. (And hell yeah, everyone knows that Shepard is a 'he' :P )

With Dragon Age, or any othe first person storytelling, it would be much more strange, as in those game there is more immersion to the main character. So it gets weird when Alistair tries to romance you. (Although it's always fun to play as a megalomaniac psychopath dwarf female rogue)

I have played ME 2 about 15 times...10 times with male Shep and 5 times as fem Shep, just to play all the possibilities with all the DLC and the last time with femShep she was my best looking Shep and the only bad thing is she always sounds like shes flirting with Jacob and her LI are not great choices.

Perhaps I play this game too much!!

I'm a guy who plays femshep mainly because it's so refreshing to go around the galaxy right hooking dudes in the face and taking names as a female badass, and also because I'd rather not stare at a dude's ass for 40 hours. Almost all lead characters in video games are male, so why not take the opportunity to play a female for once, which so rarely comes up?.

Renegade lines sound awesomely badass coming from Hale in ME1 and 2, however for normal or paragon lines in ME2 I feel that the gravely voice style she adopted for the role simply didn't suit a lot of the time; it greatly lacked range and sounded way too monotonous in parts that demanded a more upbeat tone. There were a number of times where I wanted to say "jeez, lighten the hell up femshep!"
