I never really enjoyed sniping in ME1, but I love in in ME2.
I love the Infiltraitor class in ME2, I love sniping left to right, but I've never tried ME1 infil because of teh crappy sniping.

Level up your sniper skill in ME1 and it gets better.

Thanks.

I've only played as soldier in ME1 and never really used to sniper rifle.

Yeah once you level up your sniper skill and are able to get the Spectre gear sniping becomes quite enjoyable.

Once I had considerable skill points in sniper rifles, I sniped just about everything in ME1. Though I still prefer it in ME2 where I can start sniping things from near the beginning. Garrus, Zaeed, and I become death from above during the merc assault during Garrus's recruitment.

One thing I actually enjoyed in ME1--and yes, I know it's completely unrealistic and far too easy--is master marksman with a pistol. You could shoot that thing forever, never worrying about overheating. It was great.

So, do you like the overheat or the thermal clip concept better?

the overheat concept seems better since you can't run out of ammo, and if you do overheat you canget into cover like when your health runs low.

That's what I Was thinking.

Especially with snipers since the powerful ones only carry up to around 15 bullets.

I'd like a system that combines the two. Ecael described how such a system could work (*Click Here*), but basically you get a certain number of thermal clips and it allows for a certain number of shots before it overheats and you have to eject it. So think about a sniper rifle that gets 2 shots out of a thermal clip before it overheats and you need to eject it. Or an SMG that gets 100 shots out of a thermal clip before it overheats.

I would actually like a system where weapon powers were mods, or ammo types, that used thermal clips, but standard ammo, not disruptor or anything, didn't need thermal clips.

Lorewise, it could easily be said that cooling efficiency has been increased for weapons, letting them fire standard ammunition without appreciable heat buildup. The special ammunitions, however, generate more heat when fired, making them require thermal clips for the weapon to operate without catastrophic heat failure.

Puts a limit on your special ammo types, but not too bad of one, depending on the rate of thermal clip drops, but still lets you fire for days and days like ME1, just at a reduced effectiveness for your weapon (since you aren't using ammo mods.)

That's actually better. It's like the power ups for your guns wouldn't be powers you spend points on, but cartridges you pick up.

I really like that idea.

I like this, I hated that thermal clips was'nt truly universal in ME2, but I would have liked more of a combination of the two systems. I mean why would the military totally throw out the old system for one that would limit them to being able to fire only as much as the clips they could carry? Sure, the thermal clips allows for faster cooldown and constant fire at the target, but if I don't need to cool down my weapon fast I don't want to NEED to reload the thermal clip anyway. Like making a headshot with a sniper rifle and then moving in for close combat with other enemies I don't want to waste that clip, but rather put my sniper rifle away and let it cool down.

That's a really interesting idea. Have you put it in the "wishes for ME3" thread? If not, do so! It sounds cool, and it would make the use of ammopowers a more tactical and interesting choice.

Except the fact that ME1 SRs have longer effective range than ME2 SRs.

True, but still, it moves around too much.

Combat in ME2 takes place at too short distances to make sniping convincing. Sniping is not compatible with high-speed action combat. It was much more fun in ME1. I don't know why people think it "crappy", it always worked very well for me.

It's all about the skill points. Not many people can line up their shot until they've invested more than half the skill points into the sniper rifle ability. I've known one person who started killing people with the sniper rifle on his first playthrough on Eden Prime and went through the game twice never touching the pistol. When I asked him how he did that, he just claimed it was natural skill that could not be taught to the likes of me. Then I grabbed the controller, killed everything with the pistol, unlocked the pistol achievement he was so proud about not getting, and ruined his life forever.

The above might contain embellishment.

People put almost no points in the skill and then complained sniping was crappy? That's stupid. Also, expecting that one weapon suits every situation is also stupid - though the pistol did, sadly. Anyway, once finished with the Citadel you could have enough skill points in the SR skill for things to start to be fun, without depriving yourself of too much skill elsewhere.

The sad fact about sniping: in ME1, we had a few scenarios where sniping was fun and appropriate, in ME2 we have none. All improvements in game mechanics cannot make up for that.

Perhaps. The soonest you can get a reasonable sniping ability is, I think, level 5? This is if you completely ignore leveling anything other than sniper rifles. If I want to get a decent sniper rifle ability while still getting decryption and electronics, then I'm looking more at level 10. And if I level the way I want to, then I'm looking at level 15.

And Shepard is supposed to be some elite N7 marine, too. Apparently, they didn't cover sniper rifles during training.

Compare that to ME2 where you can use sniper rifles as soon as you get a sniper rifle.

I used the sniper rifle all the time in ME2. Headshotting a YMIR mech is the highlight of combat for me. Being up on the second floor with Garrus while sniping waves of mercs comes in second perhaps. If I wasn't playing an Infiltrator, then the Viper became my long distance SMG friend.  I know people complain about the lack of thermal clips for sniper rifles in ME2, but I honestly had no problem with it.

It depends on the weapons. For the likes of the Avenger or Predator, sure overheat would work just as well.

I can't really see an unlimited ammo concept for the Widow though, unless the cooldown period was much longer, but then people would complain about not being able to fire it soon enough.

Same goes for the Cain...

Sniper Rifles become good at rank 9 in ME1. That's when it stops moving around so much.
