All the pieces are White Steel except the Gauntlets and they are Volcanic. Shouldn't a set be all the same materials?
Or did they "upgrade" since I purchased them from Herren/Wade later?

You are probably right. If you store them in a chest and come back for them, they will all be at higher tiers. At least that is how I think it worked with the chest from the warden's keep DLC; I don't know about Awakening.
