Lineage
Chapter 1-
Lilith was very much like her mother. Though she wanted
nothing more than to have nothing to do with her mother. But there are
things in life that cannot be changed, no matter how much we try.
Lilith
began as every child begins-curious. And her mother was more than happy
to teach her. Lilith learned of many things. Mathematics, history, the
stars, legends, people, and so much more. But what she always wanted to
know, what she really wanted to know, was who she was. From an early age
she was curious about her origins. She understood that she came from
somewhere and she needed to know where that was. Perhaps her mothers
biggest mistake in teaching Lilith was telling her at an early age about
mothers and fathers. The concept of a father baffled Lilith, and her
mother could not offer much insight. Lilith would ask who her father
was, and her mother would always tell her nothing. It was not until
Lilith was a young girl of nearly seven cycles that she learned she had a
father. A father who wanted to meet her.
In the years that
followed Lilith attempted to leave to discover her father, but her
mother always found her and always forced her back. It was too
dangerous. Too many people cannot be trusted. A young girl can't wander
on her own. But most importantly, it would break your mother's heart.
But Lilith knew she was supposed to do more than live in a shack with
her mother, moving from forest to forest. She had a purpose. She knew it
her whole life. And one more time she left her mother, knowing she
would be found. But this time her mother did not come for her. She felt
alone for the first time in her life.
Stephen
had been traveling for three days and two nights without sleep. This
forest was treacherous and he couldn't risk making camp, not with rumors
of Darkspawn appearing nearby. Who could say if the tales of the
Blackwurm Forest were true? But he knew he had better see the end of
this forest soon or he would die of exhaustion. He could not yet see
sunlight ahead.
"If I could just rest... even for just a..." He
pressed himself firmly against the nearest tree and slid his back down.
He remained in a squatting position. One thing a soldier always
remembers is to stay alert and be ready. He just needed to rest for a
moment. Just a rest.
Stephen awoke to the sound of screaming. He
rushed to his feet and followed the sound of the screams. It was a girl
and some sort of creature. He rushed to the edge of a tall hill. Below
it a young girl surrounded by Darkspawn. He dropped down onto one of
them as he drew his sword and readied his shield, but the Darkspawn
seemed uninterested in him. He didn't take the moment to be baffled and
simply began punishing the creatures for their mistake. His skill with a
blade was marvelous, swift and precise. It wasn't until the third
Darkspawn fell by way of decapitation that the rest took note of the
threat. He quickly counted them. Five Darkspawn to his left and three to
his right. The nearest two rushed at him but they were unskilled and
relied on sheer brutality. Their blades met his shield with a loud crash
as Stephen brought his blade into the neck of the first and across to
the abdomen of the next. And just as he readied himself for the next
assault a loud, bursting jolt of lightning erupted through the
Darkspawn's ranks. Each of the Darkspawn fell, dead or dying, their
smoking flesh boiling. Stephen looked up to see the girl running away.
"Wait.
Stop!" He started after her, but stopped when she picked a sword off
the ground and spun at him. "Just wait. I wish you no harm."
"Then
just leave. Just leave me alone," she said, trembling.
"You
should not be alone out here. 'Tis too dangerous. I see you are a mage,
but you haven't a staff-"
"I am a what?"
"You are a mage,
are you not? You did cast that lightning? Or has the Maker gained a
sense of humor?"
"What? I don't know what you're saying. You
speak in a strange manner."
"Oh, I'm Orlesian. I wasn't aware
mages were not called mages in Ferelden. What do you call magic users?"
"I
don't- I never thought there was a word. I just... I just need to
leave. You don't want to be here if my mother finds me. She will kill
you."
"I do not understand. Is your mother trying to hurt you?"
"No,
I just need you.. I need you to leave me. I have my sword. I shall not
let it be taken from me again. Are you satisfied? Can you leave?"
"Nay.
I need to understand what is happening. Why were so many Darkspawn
trying to take you? They could have killed you but they disarmed you?
They wanted to take you. Why?"
"Maybe because of my father-"
"Your
father? Why would Darkspawn want to take you because of your father?"
"Hmmph!
Just leave me alone!"
"I do not think I will." Stephen stowed
his shield and sheathed his sword.
"You are so annoying! Are all
Orlesians like you?" She put away her sword and started walking east.
"Yes.
So what is your name?"
-sigh- "I am Lilith."
"And I am
Stephen. I was a soldier. What about you?"
"What about me?"
"Tell
me about yourself. How old are you? You look like a teenager, but you
wield magic like an old master. There must be a story there."
"My
story is my own."
"What about this mother of yours? This deadly
woman you so fear?"
"I do not fear her. You should fear her. She
is very powerful. A mage, as you would say. She taught me to use magic."
"What
is her name? A mage so powerful, there must be tales of her."
"Morrigan."
"You
mean Morrigan, the daughter of Flemeth? Surely you jest!"
"I
know not of any Flemeth. But my mother is called Morrigan."
"You
just became much more interesting. There is no chance I will leave
now."
-sigh- "I'm going to regret not hitting you with that
lightning, aren't I?"
"You do still need protection. And you
appear to know where you are going in this unearthly wood. I fear I
became lost and was merely traveling in circles."
"Fine, but as
soon as we make it out of the forest you have to leave."
"We will
see."
After several hours of travel Lilith and Stephen found
their way out of the forest.
"So are the stories of your mother
and the hero of Ferelden true?" Stephen broke the silence.
"Yes.
Enderan is my father."
"Truly? You have a most amazing lineage. A
mage born of the most notorious witch in Ferelden legend and a Grey
Warden born of royal blood. Absolutely amazing. I knew I found you for a
reason. This is how I will restore my honor."
"What? What do you
mean?"
"If I can reunite you with your father he has the
authority to Knight me, or at the very least have king Allistair Knight
me."
"But what of restoring your honor?"
"-er, I..
nothing. My story is my own."
Just before night fell they
reached a town. It was a town of fair size. They had several shops, an
inn and a tavern. Their first stop was the tavern. They entered a tavern
filled with townsfolk.
"Busy tavern. The food must be good."
Lilith said.
"Or the ale is good."
"What is ale?"
"Oh,
this will be a laugh!"
They sat down at a small table and
Stephen called over a dwarf girl from the bar.
"Hello dear. We
will enjoy whatever meat you have that is fresh and the best ale you
have."
"That is a dwarf, is it not?" Lilith asked meekly.
"She
can hear you." Stephen replied as he nudged Lilith.
"Don't be rude."
"Oh, no, I meant no offen-I just..." -sigh-
"Mmmhmm.
I'll be back with your ale. The food will take a few minutes. We
dwarves have a hard time reaching that high furnace." The dwarf's
expression never changed. She walked away slowly.
"Maker, did
your mother keep you locked away in a castle your entire life?"
"No.
It was a hut."
"Oh. That explains it."
After they ate
their meal and Stephen drank both mugs of ale they set off to the inn.
It was a large inn that appeared to have many rooms. The sign read
"Bella's Inn"
Stephen requested two rooms, but was told there was
only one room.
"How large is the bed?" Stephen inquired. "Large
enough for two?"
The man at the counter responded "Oh yes, 'tis a
large bed, perfectly suited for two... young... people, such as
yourselves."
Lilith flashed a look of shock. "I am not with him!
And we are not sharing a bed!"
"Get over yourself. You are not
even my type." Stephen said as he walked away with the key after sliding
the clerk 3 silvers.
A loud crash awoke Stephen from his
slumber on the bed and Lilith from her light sleep on the floor. Stephen
looked out the window and saw a shop on fire.
"Grab your sword!"
He yelled as he threw the thick blanket off of himself.
"What's
happening?"
"Not sure! Grab your sword! I have to put on my armor
and we need to leave!"
Lilith slowly became more aware of how
serious Stephen was. She scrambled up and looked out of the window. She
saw a dozen Darkspawn outside a shop and many more running through the
streets.
"It's Darkspawn! Are they trying to find us for killing
the others?"
Stephen finished putting on his armor. "No, they
don't think like that. They're stupid creatures."
Lilith heard a
booming voice from outside. "Give us the girl and we will leave your
village. If you do not bring her to us we will burn this entire village
and all of you with it!"
"Stephen, that Darkspawn is talking!"
"What?!
I thought talking Darkspawn were just a legend." He peered out the
window and saw a Darkspawn with black armor. Its face was sheer white
with red eyes, and its armor was adorned with pikes topped with human
heads. "I think it may be time to go..."
After reading the first chapter some things need to be layed out. This story follows a DAO story that featured a human noble who agreed to the ritual with Morrigan.
