@Sia hmm maybe or maybe not. physically yes but mentally i don't know.

My life's plan is that if i fail at a normal life i'm going straight to the military without thought and staying there until i die.

Depends on the type of aliens.  The kind from Independance Day can stay far away.  Vulcans (and turians) would be better.

I don't know. Even in the midst of some horrible alien invasion, I think some part of me would be grateful to know there's other life out there.

But yeah, let's hope for a turian invasion.

Hmmm... Turian invasion. Sounds like a porn title. :)

My "competitive" skills are limited to a few local club matches here and there.  I'm by no means a hardcore IDPA or hi power shooter.  I have a set of a few minor issues that might make me not the best first choice for military service (minor, but chronic stomach issues have plagued me for a while, and though I've not been diagnosed, I think I have flat or almost flat feet.  Sure as hell has always felt like it whenever I've been on them for too long).

The softer femshep look is wonderful.  She doesn't *need* a man in her life to lean on, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be nice to, occasionally, let someone else shoulder the burden for a bit and maybe find a bit of safety and security in the arms of a man she loves and respects.

ah yes... i hear that. its sad that the military has so many problems taking willing people. I woulda dedicated my life to military service. but they just wont let me... i'm offering myself to fight for my country. they're turning me down. its rediculous. but welcome to the military.
Flat feet are not usually an issue, nowadays, the stomach thing... since its undiagnosed, they wouldn't even have to know. so long as its not in your records and you don't actually tell them.

and that last bit. that is the most true thing ever.

Gods. what i would't give for that right now. And I like to think of myself as a pretty strong independent woman.

Well, the stomach stuff is diagnosed and documented.  The flat feet thing is what's undiagnosed.  But, even if I was in perfect health, I doubt I'd be very good at being a soldier or a marine.  My method of problem solving is far too ad hoc and intuitive.  I'm good at large concepts and thinking conceptually; I'm not good at minutae and fine detail.  I'd be spending my entire career running punishment laps around the base for forgetting details   And how about neatness?  I haven't made a bed in months and my apartment looks like a tornado swept through it.  They'd PT my ass to death.  Pretty sure I literally wouldn't survive it.  While the military can offer an adventurous life, I doubt I'd do well or rise very far in rank.  I fear I'd end up being my unit's Pvt Pile.

As for that last thing, I'll say my opinion on it and everyone can dismiss me as a dinosaur if they want.  Many women are wired, at the genetic level, to seek that sort of security.  That's not a bad thing or a good thing, it's just a component of many women's instinctual nature.  Strength and independence is good, but those things don't erase the essence of being a woman on certain things.  Just because one can stand on her own two feet doesn't mean it isn't nice to have someone to stand with you.

Teehee. But yeah, I would love to see aliens integrated into our lives. And live to see them first arrive. I just would like to think that humanity's first response won't be to attack them. I would hate for them to see as a violent species. I wouldn't like what happened in the First Contact War to happen in RL. Gives off a bad first impression.

Of course, in the case of the First Contact War, the turians shot first... ;)

Indeedy, however, the humans were outsiders in their territory. It was over reaction on both sides. But it didn't seem like there was much in terms of negotiation and diplomacy in the case of the First contact war.

I actually quite like how the humans are portrayed in ME, as aggressive, ambitious, ruthless. It's a unique take; most SFs put humans in an inferior position, this is fresh and somehow... self-critical? Does that make sense?

The first contact war is my favorite part of the lore. For many reasons, not the least of which is that it shows how humans are essentially very similar to turians. Only a bit more flexible. :)

I don't actually think we would do something like that.  No one in his right mind wants to start a war without a damned good reason.  Even the souless politicians prefer not to start wars, since wars threaten their own personal power.

Furthermore, why would we randomly attack?  I can't think of a single group on Earth that'd do it (well, except maybe the most crazed terrorists).

I have a rather different viewpoint on this.  A lot of people are convinced alien arrival would incite hysteria and fear.  I just don't see that happening.  If the news came on today and told everyone that the crash at Roswell in 1947 really was aliens, I think the most reaction you'd get from most people was "I knew the damned politicians were lying out their asses about that."

Seriously, if aliens landed tommorrow, I'd have three questions:

1) What's the secret to interstellar travel?  I'd like to go see the galaxy myself.
2) Are the alien women hot?
3) Do the aliens have good food?

If aliens did land, I think people would stop their lives for a few days to see how things played out.  But after about a week, things would go back, more or less, to business as usual and I think most people would easily adapt to the gradual changes that open trade with an alien race brought in.

Furthermore and finally, I suspect the aliens probably aren't going to be that different than us.  They will have evolved on their world as we did, and fought their way to the top of the food chain, just like us.  There will be more that is similar than is different.

I don't know if I'd call it self-critical.  I don't know that it's critical at all, at least not on a grand scale.  Humans in ME are somewhat feared for their ambition; this is an understandable reaction from the Council which, from the human perspective, is a hidebound, stagnant, bureaucractically mired sort of government.  When a situation arises, the Council will say "let's think about this for a while" while humans will say "no time for dithering, let's deal with the problem."

And yes, humans and turians are very similar on a number of levels.  The Asari might have physiology that is most similar to human, but the turians have the most similar mindset.
