Hello Garrus Thread!

Normally at this point I would like to be able to say "Hooray, I have finished a new chapter in my Fan-Fic and have introduced Garrus!" Unfortunately, FF.net is being very weird and so I could not upload the document. So here are three things I want to say:

1. Garrus is awesome, as are many other Turians.

Yup. Very well written. I liked the, um, anatomy lesson.

One thing bugs me with many fics, though, and this one is no exception. Why oh why do the authors have to make such a huge fuss about Shepard's given name? The moment there's a "oh please call me by my real name cause nobody else does it OMG it's so personal" scene, I lose half the respect for the story, even when the writing is pro quality, like in this one.

Come to think of it, what the author did here is the worst case scenario. Half the work, it's "Shepard". Then Shep gets intimate with Garrus, and suddenly she's "Gwen". I wouldn't mind it half as much if the story simply started with "Gwen Shepard blah blah blah" and remained consistent. The way it written, it's like having two different characters. Perhaps it was intentional, as in "with him she's a whole different person" - whcih would, actually, drag it down, not up.

Meh. Sorry for the rant. The story doesn't deserve it - it's really good and more than worth the read.

I'm not sure if this question has been answered before back in a few pages ago, but so far I had no luck in finding the answer despite my efforts in scouring the internet for ages.

Do turians have to acquire their facial tattoos at a certain time or they can get it at any time? When I mean getting at a certain time, I meant at the end of their mandatory military service.

The reason I'm asking is because I'm wiriting and drawing a comic at the moment and the main character in the question is being raised outside of turian space and didn't sign up for enlistment due to her "parents" and her disability (No left arm). I was wondering if I should get rid of the facial tattoos due to contricting the canon lore.

Thoughts?

I completely agree with you, Olivia, when it comes to the "Shepards first name" thing. its like its sacred or something. I do understand where your coming from.
It kinda breaks up the story, for me. Unless done right.

Yep, agreed.

I'm guilty of sort of doing it in my fic, however. But that's more of a "here's my Shepard's background story before she joined the Alliance thing, may as well mention the first name" sort of deal and she doesn't get called by her first name for the rest of the fic. I always treat it sort of like a "middle" name, something that only get used if the character is being called out or is in trouble or something, the way a parent might refer to a child by first and middle name when they are super serious and want your attention. It doesn't feel right for Garrus to ever address Shepard as anything but "Shepard" or "Commander" on occasion (though darn it, I wish he'd stop referring to her by rank already).

Of course, not everyone sticks closely to canon in their fanfics and that's ok, it's just not the sort of way I treat fanfiction myself. I try to be as consistent with the in-game and related lore as much as possible so that it gives the story more credibility.

The codex doesn't say anything definitive on that so I would say do whatever you feel is best. I personally see the tattoos as both a symbol of one's home and a sign that one acknowledges the authority of the Hierarchy. Perhaps it is is done after a turian finishes their basic training and becomes a formal member of the military? Though that raises the question, what markings does a turian outside of turian space receive, if any. Maybe they will take on the markings of the planet/colony where they did their training or they can be "adopted" by someone in their unit (I'm thinking sort of Mandalorian culture now..). It would make sense as a sign of "coming of age" as well.

There was a excellent fanfic which went into detail with this sort of thing. It was the military concept when they have finished training which every Turain has to they get the facial markings then.
I know the fanfic is on my speeadsheet but for the life of me I can't remember which one it was.
