So I've heard the rumored Mass Effect movie (assuming it ever gets into production) is going to be about the First Contact War.. Is anyone else but me absolutely terrified for the turians? All it takes for an entire physical redesign is some idiot creature designer going, 'Yeah, that looks cool and all for a game, but let's change them up a bit'. And then you have the idea that they're the 'villains' of the movie, so they might make them more stereotypically 'evil'... Gah.

I feel as though BioWare will have a say in what happens and what they look like.

i'm hopeful.  and excited. though are you talking the animated movie(s?)  or the live action?

Quote from a IMDB member

"I know the hearts of some people just sank reading this title, but sadly this is the truth. Mass Effect the movie will, in fact, NOT follow the game's story about Saren and the Reapers. Here's the official summary as written by the film's producers:

"Mankind discovers ancient alien technology that enables faster than light travel. Using stored coordinates, mankind stumbles on a hostile alien race know as the Turians."

For those who may be unaware, this is the back-story to Mass Effect (the game) otherwise known as the First Contact War. It goes over the discovery of Prothean ruins on Mars, which jumps humanity's technology forward 200 years and allows FTL travel. The first race they come across is the Turians, which sparks a massive war. This happens roughly 50 years before the events with Commander Shepard. Whether or not he/she is even part of the story is up for speculation.

Mark Protosevich is writing the screenplay. He wrote I Am Legend, and worked on Thor, among other films. I am not certain he is the best choice. Avi Arad is a credited producer, who worked on Iron Man, Spider Man 1 & 2, Ghost Rider, and other generic films. Take that as you will.

It should be known that Ray Muzkya is not credited as a producer, and thus there is no oversight by Bioware indicated in this film. EA has taken a producer role, seeing as they hold the rights to the Mass Effect brand, and it's likely that a great deal of source material will be warped to appeal to a wide audience. This includes, but is not limited to, a likely PG-13 rating. Currently the film is still being scripted, so casting and a choice for director is still unknown.

Needless to say I am disappointed. This is nothing more then a weak move to cash in on the title without having to commit to a trilogy of films. Low budget, cheesy actors, cheesy writing and an A-typical Hollywood mentality is exactly what I expect out of this."

to be fair, I LOVE I Am Legend. a lot. both book AND movie...

i would not mind seeing a movie about the First Contact War... I mean, we get to play through and see all of what happens afterward, but there is no actual media depicting FCW ... so this kinda excites me. i love the universe ... and this is just another way to expand upon it ... if they dont' f*ck it up.
i also LOVE Ironman 1&2. I just hope they get a good director. Maybe ... Guillermo del Toro?

I've got to admit. It does sound a little crappy. It sounds to me as if they're just going to make it another "Big bad alien" movie.

I was talking about the live action one, as that's the one I thought was supposed to be about the FCW. As for BioWare having a say... I guess I've just seen too many bad video game movies to be optimistic anymore. I just feel like there's a huuuuge potential for fail with the turians especially, and that's the one thing I want most to be right. I don't think I'll be able to like the movie if they look wrong or turn into cheap 'bad aliens', regardless of how good the rest of the movie is.

The animated one I'm only worried about because turians can be really difficult to draw and I've seen a ton of fanart where they don't really look anything like in the game. Considering how animation is done, I worry their plates will be 'simplified' to streamline the process.

I don't like the I Am Legend movie, I thought the writing was awful. Having said that, I really don't have any hope for a live action ME movie. As someone mentioned, it will probably end up being "awesome humans" vs "evil aliens", another lousy popcorn action movie without a soul. Yes, I'm a bitter movie snob.<_<

As for the animated movie, I think that'll be good, but it bothers me that Manshep will (most definitely) be the protagonist. It's a shame they can't make two animated movies, one starring Manshep and one starring Femshep. Or maybe they could have some sort of option on the dvd where you could choose which one you wanted.:wizard:
That's not so far-fetched, right?

its not like this whole taboo thing of "don't call the Commander by her first name' I can see someone like, Chakwas maybe using her first name in casual, non army conversation. By the same token, I can see many of her comrades calling her that if they are 'equals' not necessarily in rank, but in respect. Like Tali maybe.
Garrus is different though, in demeanor... that whole Hierarchy thing. So i can see it being kind of a difficult thing for him to call her by her first name ever. And honestly? i think it works better when he calls her Shepard. its almost reverential.

Agreed. I do prefer the teammates calling Shep by either last name or commander. It shows respect. Especially in the tone said - it can actually mean even more. Though I WOULD also like it if by certain people called her/him by first name in "non army conversation" as Obsy put it, but in the actual game. Honestly, I can only see Chakwas, Garrus and Tali really calling Shep by the first name. After all time spent together, they've earned the trust and "equally" from Shepard, thus allowing a deeper friendship between them. True it might not happen with Garrus - hes always been the respectful guy that gives Shepard space, not trying to step over any boundaries, which is perfectly fine with me anyways.  Also, it'd be nice if the LI possibly called Shepard by first name, but ONLY on the rare times when theyre alone intimately.

~~~~~~~~~~~
@ the article about being the 1st human to meet aliens: I LOVE how it mentions: "Algorithms". Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image It reminds me INSTANTLY of Garrus' line - "Right, Cause Im in a great place to optimize firing algorithms right now ;3"
@danny: Since youre posting "updates" to fanfics: If theres ever an update to "Where You Belong" on fanfic.net.......PLZ tell me! Posted Image  Though i will be chking in every now and then myself Posted Image Still wondering when Cracked faith is going to get done >___>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
@Totpg: hmmmmmmm Garrus is definitely gonna have a GREAT birthday ;D
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ME film : I'll go watch the movie. I dont have the highest expectations since video game based-films always find a way to suck in some form. Considering that BW is working very closely with the production staff - it could be ok. Im hoping they dont tarnish the turians making them seem like horrible bully-like aliens. If turians are made into villains-......well.....i wont be very glad. Thats putting it lightly. As for the anime : Im excited for that! Im a HUUUGGGGEEEE otaku.
If Garrus can look remotely like this, i'll be overjoyed:
Posted Image
I trust funimation, and BW is there pulling strings. So i can at least be somewhat less scared for the anime.
I am editing my chapter 3 right now. Tkaing care of misspelling and stuff. But thanks danny for advertising my story. ^_^ I have also edited and added new sentences in my other chapters. But the third chapter is also short though... I didn't take my time to write it. :(
I promise longer chapters later!
[Was going to add this to my last post but tinypic was being stubborn with me at first.]
Last week i was playing thru my Maleshep playthru [attempting to finish it yet again...] and was playing through Tali's Loyalty mission [Garrus was with me as well]. I was just hacking some terminals and just when i finished and turned around i saw something simply awe-inspiring.......
Garrus and Tali were RIGHT behind me, side by side, facing opposite directions, literally watching my back so I dont get injured and/or interrupted while Im doing my hacking business. They were watching my back while my own back was turned. I was so touched by this sight......I HAD to take a screenshot of my tv screen to forever remember this XD
Hehe, I love that song, even if it bugs me that Legions says Commander Shepard, not Shepard Commander. And I just realised the turian bartender has a skull as his face markings. Now that's some serious awesome.
Hello, Calibrations. Oh, how I've missed you.
Just popping in the let interested parties know that MitisVenatrix and I are NOT dead, as has been perpetuated in popular rumor. We are simply on a very long medical leave. (Unsure of when it will be done, honestly, but figured since we were 3 months behind schedule on returning to our writing on FFnet, some people might like an update.)
Okay, this is wht I basicaly think about ME becoming a movie. So Legendary pictures has definitely put out some stellar stuff in recent years, so that’s optomistic. Mark Protosevich is being tapped for the script, which is a positive thing.
However, I’m skeptical. Not because video game movies rarely turn out well – that trend has been slowly dying; Max Payne was at least watchable, and Prince of Persia looks fantastic so far.
I’m skeptical because I’m not sure there’s any real reason for this movie to exist.
Mass Effect is a video game, in every sense of the word. The reason its story and characters are so compelling is because it is a video game – you, the player, have a personal stake in everything that happens in the game, and your choices and actions drive the drama forward.
A movie is opposite of that. It’s passive. You don’t get to interact and you don’t have a personal investment in anything that happens on screen.It’s just there. Don’t get me wrong, I love movies, but Mass Effect is not a movie franchise.
It’s doomed if it tries to retell the same story the game trilogy tells. Shepard is so personal to each individual player – even the captain’s gender is different for different players – that any portrayal of him would instantly alienate 90 percent of the fanbase, because he wouldn’t be the Shepard they know and love.
There’s a chance it could stand on its own, however, if it explores new territory within the universe. And there’s plenty of universe to explore. So I dunno if this is confirmed but if the movie will tell about the events of The First Contact War, that would be a fascinating story. If the film does that, it can expand on the universe and tell a different kind of story without stepping onto the games’ toes.
The cynic in me suspects this won’t happen, though, because the cynic in me also suspects this is mostly about money. If it is mostly about money, than the producers aren’t going to want to take risks, and exploring new territory is always risky, especially with a genre of film that typically doesn’t do too well in the box office.
In addition to all that, a Mass Effect movie would have to be Oscar-nominee material to stand up to the incredible experience provided by the games. It’s possible, I suppose, but the cynic suggests it’s about as likely as a Jack Frost building a summer home in the ninth circle of hell.I hope I’m wrong. I really do.
Done well, this could be a great movie. But due to the nature of the property and the high level of quality the games have, the margin for error is quite small.
See, I agree with you Chewin. If they do the First Contact War, it'll excite me. I like backstory. I like additions to the world. I think that the ME universe is fantastic, and would love to see more additions to it. Even if they don't involve Shepard, Garrus, the Normandy or anyone that I know and love. I liked the books, they offered a nice story that had nothing to do with the main characters of the games. it was a "how other people are dealing with this major threat" sorta thing.
Again, I could be excited for a movie. I really really get excited over anything in the franchise...
Quick question.
Have we, as of now, seen a Turian with black facial markings?
