Does pushing Garrus to be Renegade and/or Paragon make any difference??

um. it makes a difference in whether he goes towards C-sec or Spectres while Shepard is dead... otherwise.. not that i remember?

If I recall there is also a small line during his loyalty mission when you are about to confront Harkin. don't quite remember how the paragon push one goes, but if you renegaded him in ME1 and go for paragon-ish dialog choices during the mission, he will kinda 'snap' at you saying (I'm paraphrasing here)  " I thought you of all people would understand! You were the one who taught me that killing solves problems!"

The best place for Garrus to protect his family is to fight at Shepards side.

Depends. You actually talking just about me1 in general right? If thats the case then yea, theres slight differences. But obviously will pay off in me3 most likely.

Paragon - Garrus seems more "understandable" in me1, thanking you for teaching him right from wrong and such things, etc. He goes to do Spectre training and reapplies back into C-Sec. 
In his LM, theres a part before you go see find harkin that Garrus will talk about killing sidonis saying "Its more than he deserves but as long as he's dead, I'll be satisfied." Paragon Shep in me1 will ask Garrus if he really thinks killing him will make things right- & Garrus will respond : "I know you dont like it but I have to do this."

Renegade: Garrus in me1, towards the end will seem more of the same. Remembering the feeling of killing in cold blood since Shep told him to remember it when they took down dr.saleon for example. He will go do spectre training but not return to C-Sec. In his LM, when asking him about killing sidonis being right - Garris will say : "Im surprised you'd ask me that. Youre the one who taught that killing was the best soultion."
