Yea, but why would his parents prevent him from getting a tattoo or why would he refrain from getting one once he grew up? Isn't that like a human getting a swastika tattooed on their forehead?

No.

Yes it is in the "willingly making themselves a social pariah" department.  Or "making people distrust them" department.

I wonder how it's decided which tattoo a baby gets. I know the tattoos have their roots in the unification war and using markings on their face to distinguish theirselves from other colonies. But what if a turian couple lives on a planet that's not a turian colony and have a child there?

Or simply: what does it take for a turian to stay barefaced?

Or, at what age does a turian get his facepaint?

There are others way to demonstrate ones distaste for the social norm that probably have less to do with permanent displays of outright hate.

The idea that the colonials made non-colonial barefaces such a stigma is probably their final laugh to the Hierarchy.

And what about Turians born on the homeworld Palaven? Did Palaven create its own face paint marks during the unification war?

Bioware, please do something about the lack of information about turian culture. :D

I think this objection has more to do with me milking the emotional impact of a swastika than anything else. I don't know of any "bucking the norm" thing that humans can do that does inspire such distrust except for something like that. If a guy just had blue hair or a mohawk, people just think he's wierd. They don't think he's an untrustworthy villain. From the codex "As a point of interest, the turian term "barefaced" refers to one who is beguiling or not to be trusted." That's more than just thinking a guy is "bucking the social norm." That implies distrust and distaste. I think my comparison is accurate in the reaction it conjures if not in the symbol "meaning." Both symbols conjure abject distrust.

Well if Garrus is an example of facepaint from Palaven than yes.

Wow, this thread literally exploded overnight (and one day) Posted Image

Welcome back, Ragabul! We were trying to find you an Officer name over in Clan V. a while ago, but you weren't around. And welcome to the newcomers too!

One thing I picked up on paaaaages ago: in ME1, during the assault on Chora's Den, Garrus isn't always surprised that Shep would spare the 2 guards. It's another case of ME1's weird morality shifts. I always bring Wrex for that part because I like that he can shoot Fist without Shep being able to do anything about it, makes for an interesting confrontation, RP-wise. So yeah, when you have Garrus and Wrex when facing the guards, it's Wrex who says that it would've been simpler to just shoot them, and Garrus who says that shooting people isn't always the answer.

Much later on, in light of the Saleon and Sidonis situations, I found that line supremely ironic.

Concerning the Jacob debate, I saw it mentioned that they tried to do too much with him: that's actually one of the main criticisms that Kaidan gets. They tried to make him TOO appealing to the female population. He's good-looking, he has a slight sense of humour, he's sensitive, kind and caring, but he also has a slightly dangerous streak and emotional baggage. I don't think Jacob is guilty of this, at least, not to the extent that Kaidan is (I do like Kaidan well-enough, but he definitely had issues as an LI).

Jacob is a guy who tries too hard to shelve his baggage away. The fact that he gets extremely pissed off when you probe him about it is just testimony to the fact. He also has a judgmental streak that Kaidan didn't have in ME1 (unless you Renegaded him, I guess)...in ME2, it's a slightly different matter. I think his "Mr Perfect" vibe is a lot lessened because of that. Well, and because of the way he tries to keep the romance casual, too. Of course, opinions on that last point may vary (people may like the casualness).

And now for something completely different. Concerning barefaced turians remaining barefaced in spite of the stigma it involves: could it be that there are very strict rules governing the tattoos? Perhaps turians who aren't born on a turian planet don't have the right to get a tattoo, even if their parents have them? Then it would mean that pregnant turian women would have to be very careful about staying in turian space before giving birth, because if the child happened to be born outside of turian space, they wouldn't be allowed to get a tattoo.

I thought it was only mentioned that he spent part of his childhood growing up there, not necesarily having been born there. But then I'm probably overthinking this as per ususal so inclined to believe that your most likely right about Garrus.

Being barefaced is interpreted as being untrustworthy by those with facial markings, but if you're not from the colonial worlds that initially started the facepainting practice, taking on facial markings is nothing more than fear of being viewed in a bad connotation through no fault of your own. Just for that, I could see rebellious Turians, if Turians can even fathom the notion, purposely not applying facepaint to challenge the norm.

A punk rocker in the 70s or a goth of the 80s isn't trying to send you a message of their outright hatred of you so much as their hatred of the system.

It may also have something to do with citizenship ranks.

I don't remember it ever being mentioned that tattoos had anything to do with citizenship ranks though. I think it's just birth origin.

Well, you can say a neo**** is also showing blatant contempt for the system...
Lots of those guys just want attention and to be the center of a big controversy.

You could say a lot of other things about them, none of which I'd apply to a barefaced Turian any more than a facepainted one.

kglaser once called me Garrus lawyer. I was kind of flattered and also kinda sad that I'm not badass. Who am I kidding? I am officious, pedantic, and overly analytical and I know it.

I mean the reaction the symbol would have in facepainted turians.  I'm not implying the barefaces are motivated by hatred.  Only that they are doing something REALLY unorthodox that goes beyond simple "bucking the system."  Anyway, let's just leave it.

I used sensationalist words and I think you are reacting to that more than anything.

I think this too. Otherwise you have to keep changing the tattoos whenever someone gets pro/demoted.

I've always wandered how citizenship works for turians who live outside turian territory. What about turians on Omega? Do they still serve in the military or are they "outside the system?" Do you think some turians go out to the Terminus Systems as humans do to get out of Alliance or Hierarchy Space? All that business on Taetrus with Facinus definitely shows that there are turian separatists who want nothing to do with the Empire.
