I still love it and I'm sure others still do. Just need more people to post on it. Even if there was ME3 news, we can't discuss it so it's hard to keep the thread going when every topic under the sun has been burned up already. (no pun intended)

Ah yes, the walls of text that used to be produced on this thread always used to brighten up my morning, Arcana was usually at the forefront of that. Oh well, I'm sure she's just busy having a life, unlike the rest of us.

Most of you probably remember the big Saren discussion, right? For those who don't, it began here with a claim by yours truly that Saren was not evil but rather misguided.

In summary, Enthalpy and myself tried to defend Saren against accusations of not only being evil, but also cowardly, brought on with great skill and persistence mostly by Skits, BubbleSauce and Chewin. Nobody "won" the debate - we agreed to leave it at "not enough material in games to study his character in such detail."

Now, I don't want to revive the discussion, but since some people expressed a certain nostalgia about walls of text, I'll quote an independent analysis of Saren's character by the one person, other than the writers themselves, who can claim to have known the man: Fred Tatasciore, Saren's voice actor.

"We know Saren is a Turian, which gives him a reptile (raptor like), sometimes cat-like vibe. I live with cats and a giant iguana (named Twitchy), so I felt very much at home with it. Using this cat and lizard idea, there’s a stillness, intensity, and intelligence inherent to him, which only makes him a stealthy and wise warrior. As a man, he has tremendous honour, no matter how Machiavellian. He is efficient, genius, and strongly directed. I then try to find his tone (both spirit and voice), and attempt to create, borrow, and steal from my life and characters/actors that I know (like a spice rack, or effect pedals for an instrument). Not that you want to “copy” something, but use it as an inspiration. As a social critic, supremely intelligent, efficient killer, who gets what he wants, reminded me of Doctor Lektor (a lizard like one). His pitch and tone felt like rhythm of Ian McShane’s Swearington on Deadwood (kinda), in that he knows where he’s going, way before he gets there. Saren’s spirit reminded of Vader in that there was inner conflict of serving an overlord of seductive power and a good, yet betrayed heart, who wants what is right, and ultimately, be set free."

"In most all cases, you rarely play a “villain” (meaning, “I’m a bad guy”). Most people are protagonists who want or need something, and if they hurt you, it’s because they feel wronged in some way (unless they are just complete sociopaths, and those are fun to play, too). There is for me, certain villain “tones” that I like to play in some characters to portray something that would scare or creep me out if I were facing those characters. In Saren’s character, there is a method in his madness- he needs to serve The Council, and eventually, The Sovereign effectively. He has brutally efficient methods that get the job done. He is a soldier to the end. He lost his brother in the First Contact War, and sees humans trying to dominate. It is for these reasons and more why he dislikes and distrusts humanity (and even has little regard for life). So in his sadness and unbroken and calculating resolve, there is tremendous humanity, and I tried to play that by keeping this hidden under his cold austerity, not tipping the hat too much (hopefully). We find out he is a cold beast with a heart of gold. He has hidden empathy, and justifiable reasoning."

"Retroplayer- Fred, Saren is some ways is a victim himself. When eventually overpowered by Sovereign due to its “indoctrination” he is merely a tool of higher and more malevolent being. How did you tackle portraying Sarens steady decline into complete subservience?

Fred Tatasciore (Saren)- To start, he was already at odds with humanity, even beings he was working with. Like I said before, he has a cold tough exterior, and an impenetrable wit to begin with (and underneath it all, a heart that wants the right thing). Again, he reminded me of Darth Vader getting pulled into something so seductive. Also, Doctor Faustus finding true meaning though leading him to hell, or even Hellraiser’s Pinhead, completely lost in something, yet feeling the desire for discipleship of a new and twisted way. The Sovereign (beautifully voiced by Peter Jessop) offers Saren a completely seductive existence, an upgrade of a kind of immortality, fusion of organic matter and machine, with the best parts of both, and neither weaknesses. After all Saren’s been through, and his quest to serve, this far exceeds any of his expectations, this is a whole new way of life, like a new heaven (sign me up!). So I had to play this enthusiasm, which he hopes will be infective (he really believes in this, and it’s the first time he’s believed in anything for a long time). Now the setback is, it’s taking him over, and he only realizes this when it is too late. He cannot even control himself bodily, if he even questions it, and questioning is what made this man so smart to begin with. I wanted to show that he was smart enough to know he was losing himself at some point. His subservience makes him a tragic slave, he knows it, and has to face an ultimate choice. Though a villain, he’s kind of a tragic hero of sorts. I was hoping to have him lose control slowly."

"Like I said, most villains think they are their own heroes, so the line between them is very thin. It’s usually based on a morality or lack thereof, how far will they go to get their wants. So I like playing both, equally, although villains tend to have the most color (even humor sometimes). But as long as the character has pathos, and something I can connect to, I love it. I like playing a variety of roles. Saren is one of my favorites, because he is a villain with pathos. All the heroes and villains you mentioned (thanks), all have earnest desires and survival needs, and my job is to honestly portray them and help them get what they want, be they “good”, “bad”, or other."

(All emphasis by Olivia.)

After reading this, I am content in the certainty that my view of Saren is not at all unfounded, rose-colored or corrupted by reading and writing too much fan-fiction. In fact, Mr. Tatasciore, as a reliable judge of Saren's character, confirmed most of the ideas I hold dear, and gave me many more to ponder on. I hope this will soften the hearts of others here as well, and if it doesn't... oh well. We have done our best.

I wish that I had a wall of text to follow this up..... I don't. :( i've never been a wall of text sorta person, unless it was something I believed strongly in.

This, however.... Olivia, I bow to you on this one. I thank you for posting this. I adore Saren and I think he's one of the more complex characters in the game..... And this just proves it. I absolutely LOVE bad guys that I actually care about. Makes the game so much better... and this just pretty much summed up everything I adore about Saren.

except his relationship with Nihlus. :D But thats all in my twisted fangirl brain.

<3 Olivia.

Awww, Bubble. I didn't mean to imply anything bad about that discussion, which I really enjoyed. It was tense and difficult, but in a good way. Hope we'll have many more. :)

Oh, Obsy... I know, right? <3

And um... I'll use this opportunity to advertise another story of mine. It has Saren/Nihlus, but the central pair is actually Nihlus/Garrus. Didn't think it possible? Check out The Candidate.

I suppose, but I'm a cynic and I'm very critical of other people and sometimes I start to sound obnoxious... Probably because I am obnoxious, and it does often undermine my arguement. Especially in the whole Saren is evil debate, considering I completely misconstrued the events of a book that explained a lot of what my arguement was based on, and once again I do apologise for that, as that wasn't so much me being obnoxious, as it were me being bloody stupid. Plus I dislike racism for personal reasons and so for a long time, I hated Saren by extension. If I'm honest I'd probably redo an awful lot of that arguement if I could redo it, seeing as part of me still dislikes Saren, however maybe that's because I'm not supposed to like him, he is the Antagonist after all.

If there's someone I've comed to respect, then that's Fred Tatasciore.

As for my views on Saren, while I still stand on my opinion on what I think of him, this interview did change a few points of his character for me.

Still, a very nice find, Olivia. It was enjoyable reading the other character interviews as well.

Oh, nice. All that reminds me of the big ramble me and Kim had in the ME1 forum... 7 months ago, it seems. I think we agreed on most things, the only point of contention being that I believed the book 'Revelation' failed to capture the multi-dimensional nature of Saren that the game put forth so subtly and well. That interview is fairly interesting to read, so thanks for posting that.

I am still convinced that it is the voice acting which gives the character Saren that extra layer of depth which allows you to see beyond his otherwise cold exterior. In ME1, Fred Tatasciore is almost certainly one of the best voice actors, if not the best (the standard in ME2 is generally higher I find). I wish Garrus had gotten to talk to Saren, if only briefly...

Uh, hi. Hope everyone is well! I go back to lurking now...

(PS. Definitely misguided, not evil *cough*)

That, in itself, is the perfect description of Saren that I wholeheartedly agree with.

How come that reminds me of something similar I wrote. I know i took part in that discussion too at some point with a wall o' text....*browses thru saren discussion*
aw yes:

...Agreed on him shooting himself as a means to end it for him with "no other way for him." Clearly [IF charmed, or talked down in some way], Saren can see theres hope against the reapers. But with all that he's done...heck - and what he's HAS become, he saw it was too late for him to make some sort of change. Shooting himself proved willpower but also in a way stopped allowing himself to continue to help the reapers in any sort of way. Also I guess maybe think shooting himself as a means to take responsibility for the horrible things he's done. His words and tone portrayed that. He did also leave it to Shepard to put an end to all this since he obviously cant anymore. Thats the one tragic thing about Saren.

Ditto. If you hadn't said that, I surely was going too. His portrayal and views on Saren, a character he himself voice acted; thus giving him a connection to this character on such a deep level that many of us can't comprehend [ok we can, but you get what I mean] hasn't tampered with my own views on Saren either. On the contrary - its actually further confirmed and solidified my own opinion on him because I shared the same view point. Saren is a complex character, and its because of that that I actually liked him as a villain. As a person, pass. You wont see me sharing a drink with the guy - but I still defend him as one of my fav antagonists. When it comes down to it, I love him because I hate him. XP He's in one of the top spots of my "fav villains of all time" list.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BTW - something came to my mind this week - On twitter [idk when, this was awhile back], Casey said that "All romances that have been carried over will have a resolution at the end.", like a happy ending. Now this makes me think that anyone currently as Shep's LI could be supposedly "safe" from previously said "uncontrollable death". But then at the same time, it could just be IF the person survives the game. Regardless of the case, this just upped Garrus' survival rate, and a possible "hidden meaning" hinted at that his supposed death could very well be avoidable. Casey mentioned that romances from previous games will be greatly affected in the end seeing as the relationship is already established for so long, especially those from ME1. I see Garrus' romance plot being deep as there needs to be a history with Garrus to even have him as a romance option in me2 to begin with.
So....thoughts on this so called "resolution" ending b/w FemShep & Garrus?
and plz - no mutant babies. Image IPB
edit: ......damnit. I did a wall of text again.
....well.... my walls of text were mentioned right? XD
Heh. And there I thought I was the only one who didn't know about the interviews. A lot of great stuff there indeed.
Arcana, sorry I didn't mention your involvement in the discussion. I didn't forget; it's just that you sort of walked down the dividing line, not really supporting either side. Which is probably the best position to take with this. :)
Obsy, Bubble, thanks again and a hundred times for reading, and encouraging, and recommending. You make me feel like I'm doing a good thing. To make but one person smile (or cry, as it were) - there's no higher goal a writer could strive for.
Well, except $$$ of course, hehe.
You don't have to play it, the only thing I'm worried about is them diverting resources away from developing the single player to make a crappy multiplayer, so that we're all left thinking how much better the single player could have been if the mulitplayer wasn't there. (ala dead space 2)
Dead space 2's multiplayer was just an excuse for EA to use their stupid online pass system, I really hope that's not what is happening with ME3.
