It's alright, because I have enough cute vested in me to calm everyone down. But I can only use that power once a day, and only on mortals.

Garrus Vakarian, is a sniper. But Garrus Vakarian does not snipe. Sniping would imply the possibility of missing. There are 10 billion people in Citidel Space, because Garrus Vakarian allows them to live.

Sorry, had to do my Garrus version of the new WoW commercial lol XD

I gotta say, I'm glad that this thread is spoiler-free for ME3 thus far.  And I'm sad to hear that so many spoilers were released on that thread.  I poked my nose in about a month or so back and there weren't any spoilers then--at least, none that I saw.

If there are amazing, fantastic moments with the characters I like the best, then I want to be amazed at them when I play the game.  I don't get why people want to spoil the surprise so soon.  Yeah, I would still play the game, but the "magic" that happens the first time I play a game would just be gone.  Anyone else feel that way?  Even if I love the game to pieces, it's never the same when I play it the second time.  I actually found it very hard to replay Dragon Age: Origins, even though I was crazy about that one and played it before I first played ME1.  I think I still haven't managed a second complete playthrough of it, maybe because I lost my main character in a computer failure.  (Along with my original Mass Effect main, a biotic named Julia.)

So anyway, I haven't had that problem replaying ME1; I've replayed it several times in fact.  Right now, I'm replaying it again, and I've come to have a few random thoughts on the crew.

Garrus is clearly not cut out for C-Sec.  He knows it, we know it.  By ME2, he fails at playing vigilante.  Where is he happiest?  Well... he never seems to have any problem being a soldier.  The man needs to face the music and re-enlist.  He's never going to be happy with C-Sec, he's probably not going to do any better as a vigilante in the future than he did in ME2, and frankly, until he's more confident in his own abilities and more able to control his impulses, he'd be as bad a Spectre as Saren (my personal opinion only--bear in mind I still think he's an awesome character).  I also believe that he could use the discipline of the military to keep him from running off and killing civilians just to take the bad guy down.  In ME1 and ME2, it seems he's likely to go that path sooner or later, and it's going to be terribly painful to him because despite his gung-ho personality, at heart, he just wants to be a hero.

I have a bunch of thoughts on the other ME1 characters, too.  One that bears mentioning here due to its connection to Garrus:  I think that Ashley's specifically singling out Garrus and Wrex as potential top-secret-data thieves speaks volumes that she is, in fact, racist against turians and krogan if not asari and quarians.  It's pretty cold of her to make that kind of accusation against Garrus, too, because I've been taking them out in my party together and I think that Ashley may be the only squad member he doesn't say something condescending or insensitive to.  All the more reason I think he's military at heart, and all the more reason that Ashley looks really bad for being so suspicious specifically of Wrex and Garrus--when at that point you have Tali and you could have Liara (this is the first conversation you have with Ashley after beating Feros, Noveria, or Liara's Dig Site).  Don't get me wrong; I think Ashley's one of the more interesting characters, and I've come to choose her over Kaidan as the Virmire Survivor about half the time.  I also believe that if she survives, she's bound to become more accepting of aliens, just as Pressly does.  Even now I'm debating letting her be the survivor despite initiating a romance with Kaidan (because I decided I couldn't just romance Garrus all the time)!  And in part it's because of her comment in Flux about taking her sisters there sometime.

Did anyone else see the preorders for the Garrus figure?

I'm not embarrassed to say that I "squeed" for the first time in my life when I saw it on the Bioware store.

Well I wanted to say hi to all the other Garrus fans! I've had a few things spoiled for me (mainly because my fiance couldn't help himself and just had to read through spoilers to find out more info about Tali.. lol) But I wanted to come to this thread because I don't want to find out anything else accidentally.

I don't know about anyone else but I've been replaying ME2 (and romancing Garrus every time of course.. I just can't help myself) in anticipation of ME3..

I feel like the more I play it the more I get out of the interactions between my femshep and Garrus.

Just listening more to the way something is said or body language in a scene... maybe I'm just becoming an obsessive Garrus fan girl.. nothing wrong with that though right?

Oh, I also wanted to recommend a song - No Matter What by Papa Roach.. I constantly listen to it when playing anything Garrus related.. it definitely works in regards to any character you're romancing <3

I'm still on my ME1 replays before I hit ME2.  But yes, I know what you mean about noticing different things when romancing Garrus.  When I first played that romance with my original Main-Shep, I felt it was really ambiguous, that Garrus was being kinda sleazy right up to the end.  It certainly was an awkward romance.

But on replaying after that, I thought it was pretty clear he's trying to tell Shepard that he's hoping it isn't just about sex for her.  He's wanting something a more romantic, but has trouble framing that idea in words--or maybe he's afraid of Shepard's reaction if he does.  Which probably explains why he goes to such great lengths to try to make their one-night fling into a much nicer date with wine and music.  In the meantime, he makes awkward innuendo and attempts to hint at wanting a relationship by telling Shepard he just wants a few moments for them, and reminding her she could certainly find someone more, well, human to hook up with (which I've come to see as Garrus's attempt at reassuring himself that yes, it's him she wants, and no, it's not about xenophilia).

Consider this:  if you romance Garrus, your Shepard's basically saying that if this is the last time she ever has sex, she wants it to be with him. Shepard knows she or anyone else may not return.  Garrus actually openly tells her that there will, realistically, be casualties, so he's obviously aware of this too. On the one hand, it could just be a "one last roll in the hay before I'm pushing up daisies" thing, in which case you'd probably pick someone you like and trust, but it wouldn't mean anything except a good time for one another.  On the other hand, it's also a good opportunity for Shepard to review what--and who--matters to her most.  Barriers like species and culture would seem silly reasons to stay apart if you're both more than likely going to die anyway, so if you're feeling some kind of attraction, well, as Garrus says, "Why the hell not?"  And if you survive and he agrees, well, maybe something good will come out of it, who knows?

I'm not saying that everyone's ignored the weight of the suicide mission (it's been brought up before), but Shepard knows from the time that she learns about the Omega 4 relay that this is a suicide mission.  Garrus is apparently sharp enough to catch that, too.  That's not to say that the others haven't figured it out, but I don't remember them mentioning it as frankly to Shepard as Garrus does.  If the game takes place over months of time, then, yes, knowing that as soon as you get everything in place, you may die anyway, would influence your behavior.  I think this is partly why Shepard's willing to be so blunt with Garrus, and likely also why Garrus agrees to it and doesn't outright push Shepard away despite the awkwardness that ensues.  In other words, I think we should look at the weight of the suicide mission as having more bearing than "this might be the last time you ever have sex so turning you down would be evil."  It would be influencing you in a lot of ways.  "This might be the last time I get falling-down drunk."  "This might be the last time I form a relationship with someone."  "This might be the last time I get to spend my extra credits on something frivolous like fish or model spaceships."  "This might be the last time I get to dance in public so why does it matter if I dance badly?"  Really, it kind of explains a lot.

And then there's another take on it.  If Garrus isn't going to open up to Shepard, then maybe she really is making the offer as a friend with benefits.  Maybe she's worried enough to try desperate measures--especially if she's a paragon and worried about where Garrus is going with his life.  Maybe it all boils down to "he needs to know someone cares."  It could easily build from there, especially with the weight of the suicide mission, realizing how much it seems to mean to Garrus, and, perhaps, Shepard realizing that she cares enough about him to proposition him out of concern for his well-being (and explaining it that way sounds twisted, doesn't it?).   It's up to the player and the individual Shepard (if you try to roleplay them) how you see it.

Most of you probably remember the big Saren discussion, right? For those who don't, it began here with a claim by yours truly that Saren was not evil but rather misguided.

I gathered this by playing ME. I like the reference to Vader; my favorite conflicted character of all time. Saren is a very good character and my favorite type of 'bad guy': misguided and self-conflicted, wanting to do good, but have lost the way to do so over time.

Hope nobody will mind some self-promotion (and a copy-pasted post from the ME3 thread made just in case there are people here who don't go there)... it's all for you, dear turian fans. :)

Ghost in the Machine

Summary: What if Nihlus didn't die on Eden Prime? This is an AU retelling of Mass Effect where the fateful meeting with Saren plays out differently, changing everything.
Rating: T
Genre: Adventure/Drama
Characters: Nihlus, Saren, Shepard, Garrus, Liara

Why should you read this story? Well... some people say I write decent fics. This one came out of my participation in NaNo 2011. It's a novel-length story and it's finished so it will be updated weekly and won't ever be abandoned. And... don't you want to know how Nihlus, the original Spectre of Mass Effect, would affect the events and the outcome of the first game? I know I did. Thinking about it tortured me until I wrote it down and now I will be biting my nails until I share all of it with you. :)

Happy new year, everyone! ♥

Howdy howdy Garrus thread! Happy New Year!

I know it's been a while since I've popped my head in here; busy with school and getting ready to enter the "real word" after graduation. Bah. But with Mass Effect 3 on the horizon, Garrus has been weighing heavily on my mind. So, with a much better computer, I hopped back into Mass Effect 2 with the Garrus mods and finished a video that's been a year in the making: rather, 11 months and 3 weeks of me procrastinating and one week of actually doing it.

Ta Da!

I hope you enjoy it!
