And yeah I know what you mean about older parent figures and the poor young PC. One of the reasons I can't romance Thane. The weird thing is I'm totally cool with Loghain, not sure why either.

I think it depends a lot on how the NPC interacts with the PC.  Carth and Casavir are protective, even paternal.  Romancing them = squick.  A good chunk of Thane's character arc involves his deceased wife and estranged son.  Players vary in their abilities to overlook that.

Loghain isn't like that.  He doesn't even like the Warden, and he's sure as hell not about to give her advice after she kicked his ass.  And Anora might be his kid, but you don't interact with her as his daughter, you interact with her as queen.  It's a very different dynamic.

This is very true and I do see Anora as queen more than I see her as his daughter, though her stories about him always make me go 'aww'. Getting his approval at 100% is nightmarish, btw.

I love Thane as character and I always imagine my Shepard relying on him for good conversations and as a stable friend. I also think another reason I can't romance him is he's pretty much done growing in life experiences whereas Garrus I think grows with Shepard, if that makes sense.

I can understand your perspective on Garrus "growing" with Shepard, but I wouldn't assume that a person is done "growing" once they reach 40.  I may believe I have a clearer sense of myself at 43, but I still find myself growing, learning, hell....even changing my mind from time to time.  So I guess, I could easily see Thane or any character over a certain age, still capable of growth.  It's just nice we have so many different choices, eh?Image IPB

**EDIT for formatting**

Oh I agree that people can continue growing no matter the age, I just think Thane himself has reached his peaking point already. I don't know if it's because he's dying or what but I always get the sense that he's reached his peak of growth.

That's certainly true.  It's not like people ossify after 40, it's just that dynamic and perspective are very different from when you're in your 40s vs. when you're in your 20s, and that extends to the protagonist as well. People are probably LESS likely to change in their 40s, but given the situations video game characters find themselves in, anybody can change and adapt.  Hell, even Loghain

I think Thane's peaking point mostly boils down to the fact that he's resigned to death when he meets Shepard. And I love the fact that falling in love with her completely changes his perspectives.

Well, been playing for a few hours now. Having a lot of fun and had all kind of happy thoughts when first meeting hot headed Garrus. I have to say, it's been years since I partially played Mass Effect on my friend's X-Box but I've learned that I still hate the Mako and combat is still a bit painful. It's kind of sad but my poor casual player brain is going into overload. I'm trying to simply get to the place to pick up Liara and I keep dying.

F***, I remember that section.  A few tips on the Mako:

Don't try to drive and shoot at the same time--the controls are fiddly enough where you'll likely miss.  Usually there are walls or rocks or hills, something you can use for cover.  If you keep dying, alternate between scooting behind cover and out of sight, waiting for your shields to go up, and then scooting back out and shooting.

Shooting from a really long distance helps since the Mako has infinite ammo and missiles, and you can see the shots and missiles coming from a long way.

Less is more.  Make small adjustments when steering rather than trying to turn quickly or sharply.

If all else fails, just about everything's doable on foot.  Seriously.  It's slower and more lethal if you get hit, but controls are a lot better, and biotics even work on things like the Armatures and Colossi if they're upgraded enough.

Yeah I tend to avoid shooting with the Mako. It's easier to shoot on foot, plus, bonus experience points.

Thanks! I went to bed before reaching Liara so I'm going to try again tonight. I'm right at the effing Colossus and Geth Hoppers. Garrus doesn't seem to realize what cover is for.

Speaking of Garrus I love how the options are between fellow anarchist and miffed scolder. Our conversations thus far have pretty much been:

Garrus: Being a spectre must be awesome! No red tape and all that.
Shepard: Hells yes! It's pretty kickass.
Garrus: I know, you can pretty much do what you want!
Shepard: NO PUTTING INNOCENTS IN DANGER YOU ******!!
Garrus: B-but I...yes Ma'am. ._.

LOL.  Garrus is a bit of a ****** in ME1, and I spent a fair amount of time with my Paragade Shepard knocking the stupid out of him.  Same with Tali and Liara for that matter.  It's so great watching them grow up over the course of three games.

And for the Colossus/hopper fight, just let your squaddies die and do it yourself.  Deal with the hoppers first (Lift, Throw, and Singularity are great right after a hopper lands) since they close quickly.  The Colossus is slow enough where you should be able to kill it before it gets too close.  The AI in ME1 is awful, for squaddies and baddies alike.

He really can be. It's even funnier when Shepard is just as dumb as he is. :D

Some of his comments to Wrex, Tali or Kaidan, and even Ashley to a certain extent are downright offensive.

Haha the AI! How many times did I pause and laugh because Garrus was repeatedly shooting the wall, trying to look super serious about it!

I know, he's already accused Tali about the Geth. Though even in game one my Shepard is like 'duh, of course they rebelled, you tried to kill them for asking questions!'. All of them were so innocent.

And yeah, AI comrades aren't the brightest bulbs in the pack. I repeatedly had Garrus and Wrex hitting the cover in front of me.

If I had a dollar for every time Liara dropped a big fat singularity right in front of me, I wouldn't need to work.

Between character naivety and combat  skills it's a wonder how they all managed to save the galaxy.

Don't know if you all noticed, but Sialater updated Loved (Ch. 26) a few days ago.

Is this where all the Garrus fans ran off too?

Yup, this is our new hideout.  We are super sneaky.

According to Garrus's first conversation in ME3: "Running and gunning outside the lines, making it up as we went."

In other words, they had no freaking clue what they were doing and somehow muddled through whistling Monty Python tunes.

Pretty much. xD Imagine what would have happened had they known what to do.

You know, given how big Garrus's armor gets from ME1 to ME3, I wouldn't be surprised if this eventually happened.

I just spit out my juice, thank you. That's what I get for drinking liquid while reading these forums.

That probably would happen to Garrus if the games continued.
