The only one I would recommend in a heart beat, and I'm not entirely certain it qualifies as space opera, is Firefly. But that road only leads to heartache. Worth it, though.
Mass Effect definitely has its roots in the science fiction of the 80s. For which Blade Runner is on the very top in stylistic design. I'm sure they want the game to capture the movie's narrative tone as well, but I wouldn't go that far.
I'd have to think about it for a long while before I could consider any of them hard science fiction. Maybe because I'm stuck on the idea that this would require the science to be esoteric enough as to not even be comprehensible without an assortment of science books on your desk open for reference. Or maybe I'll give it a free pass if they keep the sound out of space. Accurate portrayal of a body in vacuum. They can do it the hard way or the easy way with me.

Stargate isn't in the future. It's here and now. Something I really liked. Yet, something a lot of people didn't want. Loved it though. Watched it ever since it started, although I was very sceptical in the beginning seeing that the MacGyver dude was one of the main cast. But he really pulled that off well and worked his way into my heart, along with the rest. Watched the movie in 94 with James Spader and Kurt Russell. Loved it.
It actually got two spin-offs. Stargate: Atlantis and just recently Stargate: Universe. Didn't like SG:A too much but SG:U is kinda cool. Gotta see where that one is going.
Babylon 5....well I'm still trying to find out why I used to love this show so darn much. It definitely jumped the shark at one point, just can't say when. And I can't even get back into watching the old series. It's just....i don't know.

I never watched it. I usually wait until a first season is done and a second season gets announced but seeing that Firefly only got 11 or so episodes never made me watch it. I think, it didn't even make it to the german tv. not sure about that though. I don't watch shows on tv *coughs* takes ages until they get here and the dubbing sucks hamster balls. Usually keep an eye on new shows coming up and watch them online. I was tempted though. Yet, often ran right into the "great show but gets cancelled after one season" trap and that just pisses me off. I hate that. They just did that again with Flash Forward. And they did it before with Jericho. Lots of shows just got cancelled although they were just great....IMO

I know, I don't know why, to make way for more reality tv or wrestling I guess. (shakes fist at scifi channel) If you can get the DVD set of firefly with the bonus unaired episodes your really like it. The show was over before I even heard about it since I don't get HBO at the time it aired (and still don't) To it was an awesoem shot from the dark when I seen it first time. (Bro got the complete series on DVD.)

Dresden files? Heard of that, never got to watch it though. Link works but content not available in my country. Yeah, youtube is at it once again. Looks like I have to mess with my proxy settings once again. Will check it out though, thanks.

I've got only one recommendation, which is an anime series. It's called Tytania, which is pretty interesting for a Space Opera. Though it is based from a Japanese novel, apparently the novel is much better, though no one has translated it or any english manga company buying the license.

I'm hugely into SciFi in general. Trekkie ever since I was a kid. Star Wars too of course. One of the weirdos that goes to conventions and stuff. Although I refused to watch the new Galactica series in the beginning, since the old one was what got me into SciFi, I ended up being a huge fan of the remake. Dark, real....just woah! Can highly recommend it. Also the fact, that I do see some resemblance between Cylons and Geth, and Captain Bailey's VA is starring in the show as well. Cast is great, can't forget to mention that.

When I think Hard core Scifi its mostly as novels, writers like - Asimov, Philip K Dick, Stephen Baxter a pile of others, Space Opera I think Peter F Hamilton,- TV/movie wise thats a tougher so many fall into the Space Opera category and I'm hard pressed to think otherwise. I often think Hard Scifi is really very tech based which really had a resurgence in the 80's. Now though they add a lot of stuff for mass appeal, and dumb down the science and tech aspects.
I always felt like Firefly was like a Western, but in space!
gotta add C.L. Moore to that list ....

Dresden Files interested me but, ah, have had issues with watching science fiction/fantasy shows post-Firefly. For some reason. <_<J4N3_M3 wrote...

Dresden Files do get a bonus for having Claudia Black, with that voice of hers that I like to have people listen to as proof that she did Matriarch Aethyta's voice.
I have just created Six Degrees of Mass Effect. Dresden Files -> Claudia Black -> Mass Effect. Babylon 5 -> Martin Sheen -> Mass Effect. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace -> Liam Neeson -> Clash of the Titans -> Alexa Davalos -> Angel -> Keith Szarabajka -> Mass Effect.
I was going to say something else, but I just managed to distract myself...
Nonono, wait. Liam Neeson -> Schindler's List -> Steven Spielberg -> "The Pacific" -> Brandon Keener -> Mass Effect.

Pretty much, but the Normandy can't hold a candle next to the Serenity. I don't care if the Normandy's all ooh, shiny, what a big drive core you have. I'll take the hard knocks of the Serenity any day.Buggirl70 wrote...

TV shows - way too many to mention!!
Pacifen not sure which continent your on so you may not have seen this - but there was a little British TV show from the late 70's/80's called Blake 7, one of my all time faves, minimal special effects but great dialogue and interactions. Firefly reminded me so much of that show and was one of the reasons I loved it, it was rough and ready and didnt have a happy ending - so different from from the mainstream. The ship on B7 was called the Liberator and it wasn't shiny either!

Edit: Only if Q doesn't show to pwn them all. What ever happened to Q? I never dared to see anything beyond TNG*
I just... had to.
How's Firefly? I've heard of it but I've never dared. *I'm scared of new stuff. xD
Also Garrus. Garrus Garrus, Garrus? Garrus!

Blake 7 is sitting on standby as I am in the middle of a Cold War with my significant other on whether I will take the time to watch Blake 7 or he will take the time to watch Farscape. In the meantime, we will watch Doctor Who. Because bowties are cool.Buggirl70 wrote...

We're being too easy. Gotta throw out a show or actor that is way out there. When I revisit the forum later on, I want someone to have connected John Wayne or Bruce Lee to Mass Effect 2.J4N3_M3 wrote...

Loved about StarTrek though that they had replicators....just replicate whatever you need. awesomesauce!
I think they never solved the entire Q mystery or why Guinan was the only person he EVER had some sort of respect for. Loved him though. John DeLancie was just brilliant.
As for the Borg....Species 8472 owsn them ALL! HA!
CL Moore.....she is awesome! Just classic! I love the fact that although her stuff was written such a long time ago, it is timeless. Just awesome! Highly recommend her Northwest Smith stories...
