Anyway, so um, what can we talk about. hmm. We mentioned turian sports a while ago. Anyone think Garrus is a sports fan? Did he play turian little league as a kid? What about movies? Or music? What kinds of things do you think he would like?

*sigh* Somehow, I knew I'd get misunderstood.
There weren't names; there were titles, however. And I'm not going to go back and list who said what where. This was an attempt to remind everyone to becareful what they say in criticism because it can hurt those who can't handle it.
I get you, but the question was specifically "what fics do you really like". By even bringing up the name we were saying we liked it. I also understand that it is probably best to discuss this kind of thing in a seperate thread. Only thing is, I don't think that thread would ever really be that active. If I wanted to ask a question about fic there I don't know that it would get answered or it might take days... I don't want to fight with anybody or make anybody mad, and I know this will sound VERY cruel and I don't really mean it that way but...if a person posts a story/artpiece/mod whatever on the internet they need to be aware that some people will criticize it. I don't mean to be combative with this and I'm sorry if it comes off that way. I just don't want to have to always go to an alternate thread to discuss fanart or fanfic.
I understand. And actually... I've posted stuff on that thread for Beta'ing before and probably will again when I get to the more Garrus-centric part of Loved. I need to make sure he sounds, well... like Garrus. He's REALLY hard to write.

Well, one thing I have often tried to keep in mind is that Garrus is actually gonna be different in different people's stories because they all have different Shepards and you really do get a lot of say in-game about which direction you can push him in. His interaction with my Shepard and his interaction with "fic writer A's Shepard" is gonna be different because those Shepards are different. In that sense, he can appear quite different in many fics without actually be OCC. The Garrus in my fic for instance would probably rub people the wrong way because he's pretty no-nonsense and not even remotely sentimental but that's because my Shep hates sentimentality and he knows it would bug her. It's not because Garrus has no capacity for it at all. But yea, I agree he is hard to write. One reason I have never finished or posted the one fic I have.

I've noticed a fair bit of discussion about writing fan fiction when it comes to Garrus and his character. I think the reason why he's hard to write in character is mainly due to him not showing his personal feelings out in the open, unlike Liara and the other more... opened characters. Also the fact that turian culture seem to be alien at best to the human eyes, which is apparant with the CDN headlines about the war on Taetus, hence trying to write Garrus with a rich turian background is going to be... challenging. There's also the factor about pairing with other Shepards and every one of them is going to be different depending on the writer and the player themselves, so they might a little off to some of the other audieance that are used to their personal Shepard.
In my personal account, I do have a bit of trouble when writing in his perspective. The indication where doing heavy 'research', going through a deep discussion about Garrus' quirks and traits with your beta reader in every single chapter, is a good sign that it's probably a long challenging project... well for me personally.
Anyways, on a slightly different topic, with the war on Taetus being a hot topic to CDN last I've checked before I've took a long break from ME2, I was wondering what does Garrus think of this? I'm pretty sure he's also one of those turians who couldn't resist looking through the bootleg vids about the duel between the General and the Seperatist Leader.

On Taetrus, I think he would be the sort of turian who would understand why certain people don't want to be in the Hierarchy. However, he would have zero sympathy with using a ship to cause the Taetrus blast and kill so many innocent people. For that reason, I think he would be cheering for the colonialists here, not because he agrees with everything they do but because he would hate terrorism so much. I was actually kind of surprised by turian tactics because Garrus made it sound in ME1 like they were really conservative-going out of their way to avoid civilian casualties and such. I now think that has more to do with C-Sec than it does the turians at large. I think Garrus is a much better turian than he thinks. He's just not a very good C-Sec turian.

Me I find myself almost envying the turians. I understand where they come from more that a little. They just seem so efficient and no-nonsense to me and I really admire that. Granted things probably only work that way in turian on turian conflicts.

Reminds me of Sparta vs. Athens when I think about the Turians. Sure, it's all the cool thing these days to go Sparta, but I think I'd rather go Athens.
Well, coming as a history student, I would rather be Sparta over Athens. Women do not have any rights and are considered to just be a 'deformed male' (not my word, Aristotle said this). But if I have the option to stay neutral, I would. This is why my lecturers would always say that Ancient Greece were a failed society: they are well known because they kept writing about themselves.
At least BW tweaked a few things from Turian culture instead of copying the Roman culture and society.
