on a ccompletely Garrus-unrelated note though, I had two awesome Mass Effect moments this weekend. The friend I was visiting to go to a festival with, has started playing ME because I have talked about it so much and she had gotten curious after seeing some stuff I had posted on my facebook. On my flight back home, I was reading ME Revelations and one of the flight attendants asked me if it's any good, because he's a huge fan of the games. Meeting two people outside the internet that play and like Mass Effect, just whoa xD

I am very jealous of you.  90% of the people I encounter are backwoods types like my silly dad who doesn't even have a computer or a hard phone line let alone play video games.  Granted I am saying that with exasperated affection rather than indignation.  I did manage to get my nerd brother-in-law to play KotoR and DAO so there is some hope for real world ME discussion yet.  Until then, nerdy forums will have to suffice.

I infected one of our friends a while back with my enthusiasm for it. He's addicted, too.

I was reading in some thread you were in that got locked because of people arguing and it looked like your DA2 whiner parodies might have been taken seriously.  I was wondering.

Yea, I saw that one, wondered myself if I had gotten banned for a second. I've seen trolls do far worse though so I had little to fear.

I did get taken seriously by that one guy. That was hilarious.

I kind of take that some of the criticisms that DA2 gets stems for a sense of entitlement or the belief that everything Bioware does is a statement. If there is perceived to be a lack of "rpg elements," then Bioware is trying to pander to the Modern Warfare crowd (such philistines!) and trying to spurn the core fanbase or something.

I think in a way, Alistair was indeed enamored by the idea that he could have someone to call his own. He's never had anyone before, and there is a bit of idealism in Alistair. Recruiting Loghain in the Grey Wardens, for example, would destroy his grandiose perception of the Grey Wardens as heroes who will do what's right, and in the right way.

This is furthered, or perhaps is owed to, the fact that Duncan had "saved" him and he perceives Duncan as some virtuous benefactor and by all means a good man. That was the face of the Grey Wardens to him - good people.

So Alistair's more of an idealist fellow, in a way. Zevran's more of a realist. Makes sense. One has spent a lot of his life sheltered, the other has traveled.

So is Garrus a realist or an idealist? I think both. Realist in that he knows that the rules sometimes should be broken. That the world is not pure. That he is fallible - and the suicide mission may not go well.

Idealist in that he thinks he can really help change the world. That the world can be seen in black and white (which of course, is called into question if Sidonis is spared). That no man, no problem.

That the rules may just be there to get in his way. That Shepard probably has the best judgment, all or most of the time.

Which one - idealist or realist - more than the other? I cannot say. or rather, I don't currently feel like saying. =p

I'm gonna have to vote with idealist.  He has a very defined worldview and he really believes he can achieve it.  I don't think Shep really changes it that much.  As I've said before I think Garrus is a pretty staunch moral absolutist.  He tends to think of people mostly in three groups A) Good People B) Sheep and C) Scum.  And he thinks scum should be eliminated.  When Shepard gets him to change his mind, I don't think she is changing his worldview.  Rather, she is changing his definition of the situation at hand.  Consider, she doesn't convince Garrus that Saleon isn't scum and shouldn't be dealt with.  Rather, she convinces him that there is a better way to deal with said scum than shoot them out of hand. Or she convinces him that if he is not careful he can let his anger turn him into scum as well.  I think he thinks Saleon is just as scummy no matter what you do.  Same with Sidonis.  In Sidonis case, I think Shepard shows him that Sidonis doesn't neatly fit the category of scum.  I don't think it convinces him that scum don't exist.  He still hates Harkin just the same.  "That's the least that bastard deserves," as he says.  I also think that Garrus sometimes almost forces this worldview on himself because grey is hard to deal with.  He freely admits this upon not killing Sidonis.  That is the moment where I think his wordview is the closest to cracking.  That "I don't know what to do with grey" part.  We have yet to see what the long term repercussion of that will be.  I am very eager to find out.

The nerdage freak out on the DA2 boards is downright funny and pathetic.  I just read it for lolz mostly.  I hardly ever post anything as there is hardly ever a moment to inject anything half way meaningful.  There's one guy.  I won't name drop because it might draw his attention, but you probably know who I mean that insists in dropping in every thread and derailing it with epic whining.  That guy is bionic.  It's kinda remarkable frankly, in a creepy, "is this guy for real?" kind of way.

That BioWare's games can engender this kind of freakoutery is actually a good sign--it means they've engaged the fans enough that their emotions are involved.  The downside of said engagement is that sometimes people who can't appropriately channel their, uh, passionate feelings, come out of the woodwork.

And to be fair, almost everyone has a bad hair day (or week, or month) on the internet sometimes.  Only the joy of iced coffee saved me from a small internet snit earlier today.

Anyway, Garrus.  I don't feel comfortable guessing as to his basic nature because he's so malleable in ME1 and ME2.  It feels like he won't really solidify until ME3.

I think I missed five pages... Let's see how much I can remember to comment on.

I'm one of the people who like Thane too. As for what I like about Garrus... his whole personality. There's nothing I don't like about his personality. I think turian faces and fringe are really cool, and so is that voice effect they all have.

Romance I would want to see in DA2: A tough, badass, vengeful mage with a sarcastic sense of humor that I actually like. (I liked Ander's humor, not so much Alistair's.) One who can make explosions with his mind. If he escaped from the Chantry, that's just a bonus. So obviously, I want my favorite type of character to be included in DA2. If he's a romance option too, then that's just awesome.

And I also wanted romance options in Awakening... finally some characters I like, and they're not romance-able. xD (I thought the characters in DAO were great, well-made and deep characters. Just not my favorite type, that's all.)

Hah, it's just as well they weren't romanceable as my PC was married to Alistair. That could have been awkward... I really liked Nathaniel.

The lack of romance options in Awakening saved me from having to choose whether it was Anders or Nathaniel I'd hit like the fist of an angry god.

While in this specific case I agree with you entirely, it's worth mentioning that this is the internet. I've seen an all-caps, three-page, vilest-names-each-participant-knows screaming match about salad dressing.

I have multiple Wardens just like my Shepards, so I wouldn't have a problem there. :) My Orlesian mage would have been great for Anders. Actually, Anders is one of the few people my current Warden would like/keep around, but he's a guy - no romance wishes there.

Right, turians. A Saren-like romance option in DA2 would be nice...

Ranch is clearly superior.

I've yet to be disappointed in Bioware.   Doubt I'll start with DA2.

Well, let's see. Besides the voice, what does everyone like about Garrus? I'll second "badass with a heart" as one of my reasons.

He's a real buddy. Lover-buddy is great.

Romance I want in DA2: Sten, but I doubt that's going to happen :P

Well, I got other Wardens too.  In fact, I have way more Wardens than Shepards.  It's just my mainwarden? is my Cousland/married to Alistair chick so she was the one I went through Awakening with.  I have only played Awakening once.  I kinda went "meh" and went back to playing ME2.  Then I lent it out and that person is taking AGES to finish so I haven't been able to play it again.  I fully intend to play it more.  Oddly, I usually don't even think of NPCs in romantic terms unless I specifically know they are a LI.  I may think "this guy is cool" but I rarely think "man, I wish I could romance this guy."  Nathaniel was the first non LI character I ever did that with.  Well, I already admitted I had a thing for turians but that was very idle.  I had no active wish for a turian LI or for Garrus to be an LI because I never thought it would happen.  I didn't have wistful thoughts because I never entertained the thought much at all.  Once it was announced of course I was all over it.  Nathaniel is the only non LI NPC to date where I had an active developed "I wish this guy was an LI" feeling.  I had it with Thane too, but I don't know if that counts as it happened pre-release.  If it does than I guess Nathaniel is technically second.

I approve of this expression Posted Image

The more I hear about Anders, the more it seems I'd like him. But I have to muster the will to play Awakening, rather than take my Thane!Shep through ME1 or my Kaidan!Shep through ME2. Or finish my rerun of DA:O.

Yeah, I don't see it happening very soon.

Before ME2 came out, I thought the only thing that could make the game better was if Garrus was a romance option. So I was glad to see the news that he would be. :)

I think "it would be awesome if that character was a romance option" a lot. It's probable because I plan out so many different Shepards and Wardens with different tastes in guys/girls. Then there are some characters that I understand why they're not a romance option, but it's not going to make Shepard or Warden feel any better about it.

I remember getting on the forums about three or four days before ME2 came out and there was this thread called "Tali Fan  It Is Time" and I was like "no way!"  So I look in it and sure enough Tali romance vids.  Immediately, I think "if they gave them Tali....maybe they gave us Garrus."  Butterflies and the whole nine yards ensue.  Then I get into the old Garrus love thread and people are having a squee fest so I beg for the evidence and somebody sends me a PM that's a got a screenshot of a list of files in it.  The files are things like Miranda_cabin.mov and Jacob_cabin.mov or something like that and right in the middle of them is Garrus_cabin.mov.  I just stared at the screen with this "I can't believe it.  They gave it to us!" nerdage glee for a good two or three minutes.  So yea, I spoiled myself and it was probably my single-geekiest moment ever, but it felt like Christmas come early.  I loved that.  Sorry for wavy flashback complete with cloud and rainbow border.  I just couldn't resist.

I think I was trying to look up information about ME2 when I found the forums, and then after looking around for a while I found the Garrus thread. That was when I saw people talking about a Garrus romance and videos from people who got the game early somehow. Then I probably joined the forums about a month or two after ME2 came out.

Not sure exactly when my "BioWare is awesome!" opinion started. It must have been before I bought DAO because that was the main reason I bought it, which is kind of funny because I usually don't pay attention to who developed the game or things like that. xD I think I realized that I liked Mass Effect more than other games after the first time I failed at driving the Mako and fighting a thresher maw - and didn't just give up on it. (For some reason, I got confused and thought the planet for Kahoku's mission was the one for Liara's mission, so I thought it was required to beat that thresher maw. Joy and relief when I found out it wasn't, but I can beat them now.)
