you'll also notice that several/all of the ways that Shepard ends the romance with Garrus are "let's not ruin the friendship." That reminds me of something I talked about earlier in the thread - ME2 pretty much assumes that Garrus is Shepard's friend no matter what. A lot of the other squad mates you can be mean or unfriendly to, but with Garrus you can't really, at least not that I remember.

You can be snippy with him after you kill Sidonis.  You can say something like "are you done with this now?" in a put-out kind of way.  You can also say something like "I didn't come here just for you to die" in his recruitment mission as if he is just a useful bag of meat and you're not really there to help him.

By contrast, most of the ME2 romances were really easy to spot, but they had a bit of an "on/off" button feel to them. Even Garrus', much as I love it. So it feels a bit choppy, and you have to do a bit of filling in the blanks to make it less cut and dry.
.

I think they could avoid some of this feel, by just fleshing out the romance once you do trigger it.  For instance, say Garrus' greeting changes slightly after the romance is triggered or in-combat lines become slightly different.  The lack of surrounding content outside the actual romance dialog exacerbated this problem IMO.  Also, I don't mind a little pre-romance flirting from the LI just to advertise that that character is in fact an LI.  So long as it is innocuous and Shep has the option to shut it down.  Shep doesn't have to make ALL the moves in some obvious on/off switch way.  Heck, even Shep can do this.  There's a bit with Thane that comes to mind before his LM where you can say "just friends?" to which he will say "huh, that is...interesting."  So far as I know that doesn't actually trigger the romance.  Or stuff like the Tali hug and "I did get better, Shepard."  That stuff can be interpreted as romance lead up if you like but it doesn't HAVE to be that way.

I wholeheartedly agree. It's pretty distressing that I had to save before talking to Jacob as F!Shepard in order to figure out what options did not lead to flirting. And Miranda, at one point Shepard is talking to her butt.

Since I've had a lot of playthroughs, trial and error managed to get the best dialogue flow with Jacob that came across as two contemporaries just shooting the breeze with each other. There's nothing I can do about how Shepard starts the conversation or her tone with a couple options, but I think after awhile, it works.

I can never interpret anything Garrus does pre-romance as flirting for two reasons A) he's a default smartass and B) he is so surprised when femshep comes on to him that I don't think he has thought about a romance with her in any capacity at all.  I think that earlier stuff is friendly jabs at her.  I don't think it's flirty.  Granted people can take it that way if they like, but I never could.  Plus, Keener's voice does just ooze sexiness like the man can't even help it.

As for whether it is really flirty or not, I think it could be, in a joking way. Kinda like we mentioned a few pages ago: he's just kidding, it hasn't even crossed his mind that Shep could be serious about it. Then he realizes she is, and all the flirting goes out the window.

Also, the "just friends?" response doesn't trigger Thane's romance? Huh. Coulda fooled me. When I saw that with my MainShep, I was like "*bzzzzzt* Romance alert! Do not touch!"

As for Tali, it's slightly different, because the game actually does tell you that she has feelings for a MaleShep. So it is somewhat flirty on her part. Of course, it still sounds flirty with a FemShep (plus the suit talk), which is why I feel Tali could swing both ways, but the devs decided she was straight.

It would've still been fun to tease Garrus a little even before his loyalty mission. Like, throw him off guard with some flirty remark when he talks about his scars and Krogan females.

Well, there are several characters (Thane, Jacob) you can flirt with pre-LM. Do NOT quote me on this, but so far as I know you can't trigger romances until someone is loyal so technically flirting with Thane there doesn't start the romance. I'm not sure with Jacob. I don't know this is true. I just think it is. I need to experiment.

I completely agree.  Can you imagine how flustered he would be?

Oh yes, that would be great. Instead, what does Shep do?

"Heck, Garrus, you were always ugly. Just slap some face paint on it and no one will notice."

And yeah, I did think that romances could only be triggered after the LMs, but Thane and Jacob both threw me off. So I don't know whether you can technically start the romance before their LMs or not...

This has nothing to do with anything, but does anybody know a way to delete profiles in ME2? I have the Xbox version so I can't just go into some folder and delete things. I delete profiles out of ME1, but they remain in ME2 anyway so I have like 20 versions of the same three characters. Knowing what to import is nightmarish. I really want to clean it up but I have no idea HOW.

With Jacob, you can flirt with him and technically "start" the romance with him before Horizon. However, after that conversation, you have to do his loyalty mission before the romance continues.

It's impossible without wiping your harddrive completely. Unfortunately. Knowing that, I would mark down the date when you complete new playthroughs of ME1 so you know which playthrough is which.

I actually kinda like that line, but as I have mentioned my Shep is a completely unsentimental hardass so that kind of "hard-hat wearing companionable punch on the arm" type of thing is right up her alley.

Well, it is a fun line and a very "buddy" thing to say. It's just that there could've been a different, flirtier response choice at that point too.

@ Collider: Ok, so the LM is what definitively starts the romances then. Do they respond any differently if you flirt before the LM, but then don't pursue it after the LM? Does, say, Garrus still register it as you trying to two-time?

I agree a flirty line there would also be nice.

This is the how the Jacob romance works:

-Can be done before Horizon-

1. First Conversation (No flirting)

2. Second Conversation (No flirting)

3. Third Conversation (Can Enter Romance)

-Can Only Be Done After Horizon-

4. Fourth Conversation. This is where he asks you to help him find his father. (No flirting)

5. This conversation is romance if you started it in the 3rd conversation, or regular if you didn't.

So there's only one conversation where you can start the romance with him - the conversation listed as #3.

If you go to your "My Xbox" page(thing?), you scroll to the end to the "system settings" and sselect "memory" then "Hard Drive" onto "Games" scroll down to Mass effect 1 or 2 and it will give you a list of saves. You can delete them from that page. Which ones to delete might be complicated, but if you know your profiles well, you can pick out which ones you want to get rid of.

+ahem+ I'm new here, yes. But I've been lurking for a while now. I don't usually have much to add to conversations, but I enjoy reading them. You guys are hilarious.

Oh, and I <3 Garrus. :P

Welcome, we've had quite a few new folks last few days and I for one likes it.  There can never be too much Garrus love.

As to the profile mess, I have no problem deleting the savegames.  The problem is that the data is still linked to your Xbox account somehow (as far as I understand it) so sometimes you delete the savegame, but the data STILL shows up on the import list at the beginning of ME2.  I only have maybe 6 or so save profiles, but the import list has 20+ versions of characters.  Every time you end ME1, it makes a new one even if it is the same character and the same savegame.  I want some way to delete all that excess junk from my account so it doesn't show up in the import list.  Also compounding my problem is that I only recently got a wireless adapter so previously when I wanted to download DLC I had to physically move my Xbox to the back bedroom to hook it up via ethernet cable.  This resets the internal clock and I rarely remember to set it.  Consequently I have like 15 profiles that think they were made at some date in 2005 so it's hard to differentiate between them by date.  Sorry for the technical babble, it's a convoluted mess I have yet to get to the bottom of.

Isn't there a way to access somehow into the file system? Maybe opening the XBox and connecting the HD to a computer, or entering via the computer with a cable or something like that?

I think you can flirt in the second conversation as well.  "You're not getting away form me that easily, Mister Taylor," or is that in the third conversation?

I haven't tried this.  I know you can hook your Xbox up to a PC but I have never done it before.
