I think if Garrus wore that hat to the romance scene, my MainShep would probably say, "You've been checking out my movie collection, haven't you?" (She loves action films.)

Hah, not to get all Texas proudish or anything, but in Revelation it mentions Kahlee is from Texas and that a large part of it now a giant megatrapolis slum.  That kind of sucks, but said slum could then be a reasonable place for Earthborn Shep to come from.  I don't have an Earthborn Shep but if I did I would totally imagine that's where she came from.  Failing that I guess Mindoir has a kind of backwoods/frontier thing going on.  Anyway, my point  is I always imagined my Sheps as people kind of like that.  So yea, I bet my paragade's movie collection is full of Sergio Leone and Lonesome Dove and stuff like that.  Garrus would not want to look through there for fashion ideas.  He'd get the wrong idea.

Haha, I just got an image of Garrus in boot jeans.  That would NOT work well with turian physiology.  Garrus in a duster and spurs Tombstone style, however...THAT would be awesome.  :D   I'm a strange, strange person.

That's EXACTLY where my Earthborn Shep is from.  Meghan Shepard is from Houston, Texas.

Thanks Xsause, I was thinking about it but those lyrics sites always give me adware. Those things are toxic.

Did you write a fic about her?  Seems I recall reading a fic about a hundred years ago that had a femshep from Houston in it.  I remember thinking "yea, Houston!"

ok, so I'm bout to start a Garrus romance with a previously single Shepard..... but I'd heard that there is another way to initiate the romance besides the "we could test your reach and my flexibility" line. Is that true? Figured you guys would know. lolz

@Raga, yea, I think so. Shepard doesn't really doesn't have to regard anyone but Joker & Garrus as friends. I kind of like it because it gives a nice case for Garrus returning in ME3.

I think Jacob has the most ways of starting his romance. There was at least 4 ways of coming onto Jacob.

For the other squad members it's only basically 1 (sometimes 2 I suppose) way of starting the romance.

Here's a question - is that a good thing? It does simplify things, but then again that itself may put people off.

That would be this one:  Loved.

Years ago, a friend of mine and I dated for a bit, and it started out as a bit of an in-joke between us.   I eventually called his bluff and once we both realized the other was serious, it was on like Donkey Kong.

So the progression of the romance seemed perfectly natural to me.

Ah, you are still working on it correct?  That must be why I didn't finish.  I tend to like to wait until a fic is done being written before I read it.  Anyway, must read it again.:wizard:

I think it is completely dependent on what the one trigger is.  If there is only one and it is brilliant, than no problem.  If there is only one and it sucks, than we have a problem.  So yea, I'm gonna have to vote for "the more the merrier."  I actually love how many triggers Alistair had.  That romance has so much context sensitive stuff you can play with scenarios all day and not run out of things to do.  The problem of course is identifying them all.  Here we come back to the color font idea or your heart icon idea.  That's all you need.

As long as the romance triggers are clear ("I want you, Thane"... can't get any more clear than that) and there's always a non-romance option, then it doesn't really matter to me how many ways it can be started. I would have a problem with only one line to start it if that line was out of character for my Shepard, but that hasn't happened yet.

I think Liara's romance had options that were more "Paragon" and others that were more "Renegade", and that was nice, but the three ways to say yes and no ways to say no was not. xD

I agree Raga. I like that in DA:O there are many ways of starting the romances. You can outright tell Alistair that he's handsome, or you can say "you're special to me too," (which is my preferred route) when he says that the Warden means a lot to him. And so on and so forth. Of course, as you said, having so many triggers itself presents the problem of being aware of what options does what.

Some kind of icon or color code, as you mention, would be optimal in that case. It's a little distracting, but it's a lot better than the game assuming a relationship for the protagonist the player does not want.

It's kind of weird that it would be distracting. I mean I know it would distract me. Yet the red or blue font for "persuade" options isn't distracting. Why do you think that is?

Yea, that perturbs me as well Kim. It seems all of the romance interests in ME1 had romance traps where Shepard can only say "yes, I want you" in three different ways.

I like that ME2's romance triggers are more obvious (in the case of Garrus, Thane, and Tali, very very obvious) and even if one makes a mistake, players have the option to break off the romance with the characters.

They definitely made some good changes from ME1 to ME2. (From what I've read though, I think MaleShep will have to be careful of Miranda and Jack. I'm already in the middle of a "get out of the romance trap" replay - another one would be really annoying.) Hopefully it'll improve even more in ME3. Maybe if the new romance system in DA2 works out well, ME3 will take a few hints from that.

By the way, I just found out that one of the side missions MaleShep messed up (the one with Banes - Kahoku went missing before MaleShep could talk to him about it) happened before Feros. xD And I really don't want to replay Feros to make this right.

Sometimes not so obvious. I've still yet to get Kelly to feed my fish.

They did record same sex lines for Kaidan and Thane romances. I imagine the reason why they did not make it into the games was due to time restraints or they simply felt it did not fit the characters. This has more credence considering I've never seen Kaidan or Thane themselves having gay romance lines, only Shepard/Meer.

Well, Thane's always been straight in my eyes, so to me, it's definitely justifiable in his case. Kaidan, on the other hand, I can imagine swinging both ways, but that might just be me.

I can't see Kaidan that way...I don't know why, I just can't.  There's nothing wrong with it, of course...just doesn't fit my personal "view" of him for some reason.  I agree with you about Thane, from what I know of his character (haven't gotten to know him very well, yet).

I don't know that you get much extra from that though except some extra dialog.  I don't think you missing any actual quests or anything.  I actually didn't realize until after ME2 came out that Dr. Michel had a second mission.  Everybody was talking about the email she sends and I was like "huh, what email?"  I went and back and replayed ME1 just to unlock that.  That in turn made me decide to look up any other stuff I might be missing so I didn't know about the thing with Banes until really recently.

Holy hell, YES.  (Where's the 72-point font on this board??) :o
