Forum went weird on me for a few moments there. Posted Image I tried to quote Raga's post, and it told me "You do not have permission to execute this action."

Ragabul the Ontarah wrote...

It does make sense once you think about it.  Tali's actually got a pretty strong renegade streak in her.  Along with a sarcastic deadpan streak.  Her renegade is just a little more hidden than Garrus so on a cursory inspection he looks way more renegade than she does.

Tali's Renegadeness is exclusively tied to her status as a quarian though. She's fiercely defensive of her people (cf. how she defends that quarian against that volus on the Citadel), so whether it's the Council or the geth, that's where it'll manifest the most blatantly. She'll still be averse to gratuitous violence (e.g. she objects to shooting the monkeys on Eletania, whereas neither Wrex nor Garrus do).

There's a hitch in his voice when he says the word "away". I know he's not crying, but I'm qualifying it as a dry sob kind of thing. Like the emotion is getting overwhelming (the way he's thinking of Sidonis right then, letting him go unpunished is just such an aberration).

And lol, I can just imagine Garrus' head exploding if Shep hugged him then. But just a slightly more lingering touch on his arm, a bit like what she does when she says "I don't want to pressure you" during the second romance convo, that would've been better. The pat is just so dismissive. Kind of like "meh, you'll be ok".

Ok, I gotcha now.  I was listening to the wrong part of the conversation.  And I never interpreted that as a sob, but I can kinda see what you mean.  Very intense emotion whatever it is.

I think the pat on the arm is because maybe the devs figured guys would be uncomfortable with something more?  I dunno.  Seems something like Jacob's bro-hug done a little less informally might have worked as a nice middle of the road.  Failing that, just make the action an interrupt and if guys are uncomfortable with it, they don't have to take it.  But Garrus is also a hands off kind of person.  I don't think he'd be comfortable with PDA.  I get the feeling he hardly touches anyone or vice versa.  I'm very like that myself so if I touched somebody on the arm like that or let someone do it to me, it would be the equivalent of a hug or more to anybody else.  I look at it kind like that.

On my last ME1 playthrough, Garrus argued for sparing the rachni. It was probably because my other squadmate was Wrex, though. That was kind of an awkward conversation.
Garrus: No, Shepard, genocide is wrong! That's why we fought the kroga... Um. Oh.
Wrex: You want to know about genocide? Go visit a krogan obstetrician's office.
Ouch.
And I miss Saren, too. He was a jerk and I usually don't bother talking him into suicide so I can shoot the bastard himself, but at least he was a villain with clear goals. In ME2 I forgot who the real enemy was half the time. TIM? The Collectors? The geth heretics?

Yea, Garrus and Wrex definitely win the prize for awkward squaddie moments.  And the forums just went stupid on me for a moment.  I thought I had got a temp ban though I can't imagine why.

Contrary to popular belief, Garrus didn't join Shepard and the rest of the crew for icecream using the Kodiak when the Collectors attacked.

That actually reminds me of a really funny meme I saw a while ago in which Garrus is thinking "Tali got a hug. Wrex got a handshake. Virmire survivor had a handshake or hug. Liara got a hug, possibly a kiss. And I got a rocket to the face. What gives?" I'd post it but I have no idea where I saw it.

Patience Garrus, you will get much more than they got eventualy.

True, but when you consider there are at least some geth apologist quarians out there, I think Tali has got to take some credit for it herself.  And actually I agree with the quarian renegade streak most of the time.  I also agree most of her renegade nature is a result of being a quarian and even more importantly of being Rael'Zorah's daughter.  She grows a lot.  This is evidenced by how you can successfully talk her down with Legion.  If you talk down Miranda and Jack, they just agree not to kill each other until after the mission.  Nothing actually gets resolved.  But Tali actually makes strides to make a compromise with Legion and tells him she understands his intentions.  I was really proud of her there.

Yeah, Tali is my most favorite Space-sis :3

I just wish Tali and Garrus had more interactions like the elevator one, those two bickering like a brother and sister is just too cute.

Good to know about Tali and the rachni queen. It would seem strange if Garrus was the one who spoke up... he's supposed to agree/go along with MaleShep's Renegade choices! xD

That pic of Garrus and the Collector is awesome. I just imagined the Collector walking out and asking Shepard, "How do you deal with this?" That reminds me that MaleShep won't get to have that many Normandy conversations with him after I finish his ME1 playthrough.

Y'know...it just occurred to me. For something that thinks that turians are too primitive, Harbinger sure made the Protheans look a lot like them. I mean, they have a similar collar thingy, and also the convex chest and thin waist...

I should find a pic where you can see a Collector's legs.

Yeah, I agree a hug would've been too much, but considering what Garrus had just gone through, I thought the pat was not quite enough.

That's a very good point you make about the difference between the two confrontations. I was impressed by the fact that Tali was willing to cooperate with Legion as well. I think it's a very good thing for her that it got taken onto the team.

Some nagging between Tali and Garrus in the style of DAO would be great. Tali can be such a wonderfull smartass sometimes, I would like to hear more about that. Garrus can be rather cocky as well.

Look at its hip structure. Seem familiar?

I know it's just coincidental, but still, I find it ironic. Harbinger, you hypocrite. Posted Image

Mass Effect reuses models and textures so much that once you notice them you will never stop seeing them.

The bomb in Garrus' recruitment mission, for instance, is also used for the edges of the Prothean structures in Firewalker.

edit: I hate my **** friend for pointing that out. Now I'll never stop seeing it.

Haha, turians are so awesome that even Harbinger can't resist, no matter what he says!

Legion: We finally managed to talk some sense into a quarian. We have reached the consensus that this achievement required drinks all around.

Actually, I have unfortunately noticed that very thing. There are way too many things that have perfectly reasonable mundane development explanations behind them.  I just choose to ignore them in favor of rampant, groundless speculation and rogue world-building cause I think that is more fun.:D

Oh yes, having gone through a ton of models and textures, I can certainly agree with this.

Well, one of us has got to change.
(Lia, the quarian being harassed by C-Sec also uses these textures, along with the one going "Mommy loves you very much!" at the Alarei)

Finally, to bring things slightly more on-topic, I was under the impression that the facepaint turians use indicate what planet/colony they originate from; any idea what Garrus' streaks signify?

Palaven seems to be the general consensus. He says on Virmire that the planet reminds him of where he grew up on Palaven. Most people just seem to assume that's what his pattern stands for.

Actually, in the case of quarians, it's slightly more forgivable. I don't think they have an unlimited amount of different suit designs, so it doesn't surprise me that some of the suit models get reused. I'm thinking that BW gave unique suits only to the quarians that have an important role in the plot. E.g. Tali.

Which makes me wonder...Kal'Reegar's suit is unique, isn't it? Does that mean we might see him in a more prominent role in ME3? Posted Image Pretty please? With sugar on top?

Well, Garrus says he's from Palaven, and his markings are certainly very different from any of the other tattoos we see. Palaven isn't a colony, but it isn't too much of a stretch to believe that turians would introduce a tattoo that also designated Palaven (since barefaced is bad). This would also mean that all the other turians we've met are from colonies, though, which I find a little hard to believe.

It could also be a case of the writers wanting to make Garrus look unique and not really thinking too hard about the consequences...

I actually think Palaven may have several different facepaint patterns.  It seems plausible as I would expect Palaven to be VERY densely populated, and the colonies not as much especially the colonies farther away from the homeworld and that is where the Unification War mischief began.  Anyway, it seems Palaven might be more likely to have particular regional identifiers and such as it is the homeworld and heavily populated and you would expect given regions to still have some loose cultural affliation with former nation-states.  Does that make sense?  A colony with only 3 million turians on it works fine by having just one pattern.  But if Palaven has billions (highly likely) than I would find it prudent to divide them up a bit farther.

Failing that I could also see it being a Citadel tattoo.  I don't know if turians get their tattoos at birth or if it is a coming of age thing.  If it's a coming of age thing, we don't know if they get tattoos for their birth world or the world they are living on at the time of tattoo getting.  It's also implied Garrus was probably pretty young when he ended up on the Citadel as he recalls growing up watching his father's face on the vids after a big arrest.  I guess it's also possible his father was on the Citadel while he was still on Palaven but that seem odd.  Anyway, I think we can safely say that Palaven or the Citadel are probably the too safest bets.

The regional theory makes sense: Palaven must have a huge population, so having one pattern for the entire planet might be a little too vague. The Citadel theory doesn't really jive with me at all. It's not a colony, it's a neutral gathering place for various species: I can't imagine the turians designing a specific tattoo for it. Garrus' comment about seeing his dad's face on the vids might very simply have meant that he worked a lot, and Garrus remembers him more from the vids than from actually spending time with him. It also makes sense that Papa V would've worked on the Citadel while his wife stayed at home on Palaven with baby Garrus, at least until he was old enough to travel. Or, if Mama V was dead or otherwise absent, it makes even more sense that Papa V wouldn't bring Garrus along to the Citadel, since he wouldn't have time to spare for taking care of him. I can imagine Garrus growing up with his grandparents or an aunt or uncle, if his mother wasn't around.

I imagine Garrus was a very odd little turian as well. Unless his decidely un-turian behavior started manifesting when he was older.

After reading all this about the tattoos and the mention to Garrus' father I've just realized that we've always spoken as if we were sure that Garrus' father is still alive.

Do we know that for sure?
I mean... He said he was pissed and such in ME1 when he mentioned about the whole Spectre training thing, but... How do we know he was even alive by the time that ME1's events happened?
I can't recall any detail regarding it.

I'm somewhat light-minded right now though (or more than usually, to speak the truth, bahaha). Heat is melding my brain.

By the (offtopic) way, taking something that's abandoned in the street... isn't stealing, isn't it? It's just the right every roleplayer has to loot lost items, isn't it?

It's not fair. Well, it's not fair for those who want a turian female either, but... Kal'Reegar is just... :3

I think Garrus mentioned in ME1 that when he resigned C-Sec, his father was "taking his resignation hard". So that's how we know there's a Papa V who is still alive somehow.

But how did Papa V nickname came about, btw?

In the second Normandy convo with Garrus in ME1, he'll say about his dad "he's taking my resignation pretty hard". That, to me, says that he's still alive as of ME1. So unless he died in the 2 years between ME1 and ME2, I'd say he's still kicking around somewhere. Probably grumbling at little turian children to get off his lawn. Posted Image
