Yea, Thane's too serious for what I need. I could see him maybe being sarcastic with Joker even if they aren't buddy/buddy. That might could work. Or I'll just have to work around this problem from another angle.

Oh, so far as non-squad mates go, I think Joker would be a great choice. They're both jokesters, after all.

Kasumi: Likeable, has recently dealt with loss and is having trouble letting go of her deceased lover.

Zaeed: Both men are near inseparable from their rifles(the Avenger and Mantis respectively). The merc status may make it a bit difficult though.

Jack: Seems to hate Miranda almost as much as she does, both sole survivors of their past.

Engineer Donnelly & Gabby: They really seem to like the guns he put in. And plus, he's doing constant work on the ship like they are.

Male characters only though. Anyways, I don't think Donnelly would take Garrus seriously enough. That would frustrate Garrus.

Well, this isn't a serious conversation.  In fact, it's a rather ribald one.  And Donnelly might actually could work for that.

Hah, I could just imagine them going at each other as they installed the Thanix cannon. That might be funny.

Ah, was saying in the sense of the two actually being friends. They could joke around, but I can't see them being buddies.  I wonder if Garrus considered his team on Omega to be friends.

Now that I think about, if we aren't restricted to ME2 characters, Kaidan would be a great fit. Both of them were prone to wisecracks at times, and seemed to get along well.

Hmm I never saw Kaidan as a wisecracker. He does have a few moments, though.

How do you think Garrus would get along with Grunt? Krogan do have respect for those who keep their weapons running, and I don't think Okeer put weapon manuals in Grunt's head.

We a had longish conversation about Wrex and krogan the other day in which I already said I don't think Wrex and Garrus like each other. I think him and Grunt could get on better however as Grunt really comes to identify the squad as his clan. He even calls them that if dies while leading a team in the SM. "I got the clan home, Shepard" or something like that. He considers Shepard his battlemaster. Now, I don't think he harbors warm, mushy feelings for the rest of the crew, but I think he gets on with them fine. And with Garrus, I think the scars and living through the rocket may actually help. That is something a krogan would understand and respect. Also his drive to take out Sidonis. Grunt also had to specifically "nurture" his hatred for turians. He had to almsot work at it to make himself hate them. So I don't think Grunt hates Garrus or is buddy/buddy with him but I can definitely see him getting on well enough with him and possibly even respecting him. I think Garrus would actually be more suspicious of Grunt than the other way around.

Also, Kaidan is a no-go because this story is set during the events of ME2.  I like the Donnelly idea the most so far.

I think it would be awesome if Grunt and Garrus eventually ended up as pals, but I think there would be some tension at first considering Grunt's happy admission that he hates turians. He did say he didn't hate Garrus specifically, but if he starts going on about how awesome it is to kill turians, I can't imagine that going well. But it would still be hilarious to see.

Also, for that story, I vote Donnelly. The world needs more Kenneth Donnelly.

Sadly, it won't feature Donnelly directly.  It's kinda hard to explain.  The conversation with Donnelly is something that will be referenced elsewhere.  Though, I guess I could write such a scene for the heck of it.

... I have returned.:bandit:

Personally, I kind of like the idea of Donnelly and Garrus becoming buds. They've both got some--well, a lot in Donnelly's case, and Garrus's, depending upon how many times you wrecked the Mako--technological expertise, they're both a little hotheaded (consider Donnelly's adamant defense of Shepard before Cerberus recruited him), and... they both have sexy voices? Yes.

But Grunt I can only see as a little brother type character. He just hasn't seen enough, even though I'm sure he'd understand what Garrus has gone through, and I'm sure combat together would be fun/interesting. I don't see a deep relationship there, though.

Thane is a good candidate, as well, IMO. Thane only shares his beliefs with those who ask. In my playthrough, Shep has to encourage him to go out and seek companionship, so I can guess he doesn't readily share personal things like that with just anyone. I can definitely see a respect between Garrus and Thane, though. And, with respect comes comraderie. Thane isn't /completely/ religious and philosophical. He's got a really practical side to him, and I think Garrus might appreciate that--he's a straightforward kind of guy, too.

Yea, that's the problem. I think Garrus and Thane could be friends, but Shep makes it sound like Thane just sits around in that room all day. Granted I'm pretty sure Garrus just sits around in the battery all day as well...

But Garrus' job means he HAS to deal with at least Tali and the engineers and probably Mordin some too.

Those two recluses don't know what they are missing.

This is why I support squadmates wandering the decks of the Normandy. Yes yes yes. Then maybe they won't all seem like recluses. =/ I want to be able to come back from a mission and take 15 minutes running around the decks in order to find Garrus and tell him he needs to optimize more firing algorithms. Or, you know, whatever it is I need him to do. -cough-

It would be like hide and seek every time I come back to the ship!

Well, I don't know about hide and seek. If I got something I specifically need to ask somebody about I don't want to go hunting for them, but something they might could do is something that was done in KotoR 2 where sometimes you would see cutscenes of squaddies talking to each other on the ship in between missions. Something like that would be really interesting. Shep might not see if. But the player sees it. That's kinda how I imagined squaddie banter in DAO working. I mean a lot of times those guys were talking about the Warden and the Warden acts like they can't hear. I always thought the Warden couldn't hear and it was a just a player treat. Sort of like the cutscene with Zevran and Loghaine.

I like the idea of squad mates moving around the Normandy, but as Raga said the logistics aren't as simple.

Maybe some kind of timer to organize movement a la Oblivion?  Of course, Oblivion gets frustrating sometimes and is also designed to run on obvious day/night cycles so I don't know how they might make that work.

And then the squad mates start talking about mudcrabs.

I could go for that. Thinking about it now, that would get annoying after awhile. Dunno how feasible that might be for Bioware, but I trust them to make a good game with solid RPG elements. They did say they were working on that, right? RPG elements? Somewhere in some article or another, I forget. But I feel the same way as you in regards to squad banter--the Warden couldn't hear a thing. =D BUT, since the PC in Mass Effect has a voice, I could see banter happening between all three. Again, feasibility/time/money/whatever issues ensue. It's nice to hope.

And then there's always fanfiction. Filling in the gaps and all that.

That post might have just gone somewhere horrible.

Well, I just meant that maybe instead of being in the battery all the time maybe sometimes Garrus is sitting in the mess or something.  Stuff like that.  Again, I have no idea how they could execute that.  Movement might no be too bad so long as it was isolated to a specific deck or within a specific area.

@Sparklies
Yes, they did say they were focusing on RPG elements.  I don't remember where that article is however.

Good--sometimes my brain makes up things and tells me they actually happened. It seems like it's been give and take with the whole "It's an RPG! It's a Shooter! Wait... But it's an RPG! But also a Shooter! Brain! Melting!" My preference lies with the RPG aspect of the game (always will), but I do love the fast-paced feeling that the game presents, especially in ME2.

But now I'm just reminded of my insanity playthrough, and I kind of want to go cry. Not looking forward to Horizon. Or the Collector Ship. Or anything, really. There's something about dying that's just so utterly depressing.

AAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand Garrus.

Well, here's a question. If they did implement that thing from KotoR 2 where you see cutscenes of squaddie conversations what scenes would you guys like to see Garrus in? I personally vote something involving Tal. A scene where we see what he may have asked Mordin about "research" would have been really funny in ME2.
