Are engineers any good in ME1? I don't like to retcon a character into something else so if I did an engineer I'd one to start all the way back in ME1. Tried this with Sentinel and found ME1 Sentinel to be pretty boring (effective but boring) so I didn't finish. Too bad too, that was gonna be my sorta renegadish loyal to ME1 love interest Shep. I'd like to try Engineer. Maybe I'll do that with a pure Tali dudeshep. She'd appreciate it I'm sure. He can name his combat drone Boo.
To be fair, ME1 combat doesn't really lend itself to gimmicks all that well. You become overpowered very quickly and then it all boils down to just shooting things until they drop. I did an ME1 Engineer run on Hardcore, and even then, I ended up just not bothering with my powers. I think Soldier and Adept are probably the most distinctive classes I've played in ME1. Soldier because it blends in with the fighting style so well, and Adept because Lift and Singularity are ungodly. Infiltrator and Engineer...you just end up being a Soldier clone, mostly. Especially if you pick the AR as your additional weapon. Haven't tried Vanguard or Sentinel, but I'd assume it would be similar. Although they both have biotics, and since those tend to be more effective than tech mines, it might be more of an incentive to use them.
The fact that I remember my Adept run may also have something to do with the fact that I picked a Shotgun as my additional weapon (so no AR), and because it was my Insanity run.
And yeah, I guess it is a little weird to change classes in between games, but combat and storyline are kind of separate in my head, so I mostly do it to try new things out. So far, all my Sheps have changed classes in between games. KaidanShep was a Soldier, became an Engineer, GarrusShep was an Adept, became an Infiltrator, MaleShep was an Engineer, became a Soldier. ThaneShep was an Infiltrator, but I don't know yet what she'll be in ME2. It also makes me laugh to imagine that Cerberus may not have gotten *everything* right during Shep's reconstruction.
@ Icanhazsparklies: Go ahead and give other classes a try! You could be pleasantly surprised. I think my completionist streak helped in that respect, because I pretty much had to try the different basic classes in ME1 to get the power usage achievements. That being said, I can understand the "my first Shep is THE Shep" issue: all my FemSheps look pretty much the same because of that. I just can't imagine any other face on them.
And I love that pic. Although I think the artist said that that was FemShep right after Garrus' RM, when she didn't know whether he'd still be ok or not. I could be remembering it wrong though. As for Garrus, they said it was him after a bar fight: he overheard someone bad mouthing Shep and stepped in to defend her (which is why his clothes are ripped).
