That must be what he does when he's "calibrating". xD

I hear that there is a fridge full of wine in that wall. "The best he could afford on a vigilante's salary" my ass.

Yea, my mainshep is like that with batarians as well. She hates them.

And as for Shanxi, I can't remember the exact words, but Ashley talks about the turians dropping rocks from orbit (isn't that against the Citadel conventions?) and that "they would wreck a block to destroy one fire team." It was bad enough that her grandfather's troops were starving and many civilians were dying and that was why he surrendered. Granted the turians never do anything but total war, and there is actually a kind of brutal efficiency in total wars. They are usually over faster and they tend to have more decisive results (meaning it is less likely another war will be fought right after them.) That is, unless somebody puts in some caddywhompus treaty that just restores the status quo. (The status quo hardly cuts it if people previously started a war under those same conditions.) On the other hand, total war is prohibitively expensive and tends to kill lots of people all at once and wreck a country's infrastructure taking it years and years to recover. "Limited wars" have their own list of pros and cons, one con being that they tend to drag out for very long periods of time and don't get as much done. On the other hand, fewer people die, or at least fewer die all at once meaning it is easier for a population to recover.

Anyway, you could actually argue that even Shanxi was warranted in its own way, or rather that that style of warfare isn't inherently unethical depending on what your goals and motivations are. It's just that the turians seem to have this policy of "oh look, a new race let's conquer it and make it a client race." They tend to be a little colonial. But sometimes even that isn't altogether bad. I would say their partnership with the volus is mostly a good one. Shanxi is pretty grey. I understand why it remains such a sore point for both species. Traditional democratic notions of ethics don't completely jive with the turians. The idea of "personal liberties" and intense value placed on life on an individual level is something turians are okay with, but it is not the pillar of their society. To them there are more important things and sometimes civil liberties and individual lives have to be sacrificed to get those things done. I don't really want to get into a geopolitical debate here, but as I've said before I actually admire the hierarchy on many levels. I find myself agreeing with them more often than not.

And I had forgotten about the specific line that Saren gives to the batarian. Yes, that makes him seem even less hard than I was picturing him. I think he is still motivated largely by disgust there however more than compassion. But then again, that is something else I can understand on some levels. I tend to err on the side of justice over mercy. It means Saren would make a really lousy Buddhist, but it doesn't mean he is evil necessarily. Cold and evil aren't the same thing.

Still in the grand scheme, Liara of all people has a pearl of wisdom when she says that whatever his motives are, he is still a threat to all life as we know it and he must be stopped.  Why he's doing all this is mostly just interesting.  It doesn't change what we should do about him.  Though he does get major points from me for admitting he is wrong and for shooting himself.  That was my "dang, this guy is cool" moment.

^ ha, is that WOW?
maybe he plays "Galaxy of Fantasy", that one based on turian mythology sold at the gamestore on the citadel.
It does have over 11 billion players.

Garrus plays Dragon Age. thousands of years into the future, people will look back and play Dragon age the same way people look back and play the 8-bit mario games.

"Turian mythology" is an interesting phrase.  It almost guaranties that turians previously had some religious system that is more involved than their current one, or that their current religion isn't nearly as austere as we think it is.  Not all mythologies are religious in nature, but they are generally heavily associated with them anyway.  I wander if this is some old leaving from ancient turian polytheism or if their things with "spirits" is a little more anthropomorphized than we thought.  I seem to recall that in some planet descriptor there is a reference to a major "spirit" that influenced a particular turian to do something and that spirit is given a proper name.

Sorry, sorry.  I can't just chill and have fun once I am in analysis mode.:P  I'm weird like that.  I said before that I think Garrus would totally be a shooter player and an RTS player.  I can just see it now.

Garrus would be good in the role of the Sniper from Team Forthress 2. Grunt is Heavy, Mordin is medic, Tali is engineer etc... etc...

My MainShep would have enjoyed watching Saren torture that batarian. xD She would be right there cheering him on, and asking every now and then if she could throw in a kick or two. I think we both agree that Saren was acting more out of disgust at the batarian's plans there rather than compassion for others. In a way, it could be easier to not think about all the people in pain and feel bad about it. Garrus would, and he tried a risky (but awesome) plan to save a lot of people. Not saying those are Saren's reasons, but I have a few Shepards who are a little tired of trying to change the world when it looks hopeless. The Renegon Shepard I mentioned before already had his "I'm done trying to save the world" moment and was done with it before the Reapers even came into the picture, but he's a little torn between Saren's and Garrus' methods - being practical, and wanting to help. He would go out of his way to find and kill people like that batarian, where Saren would do it because it's in the mission description and be a little more brutal because of who the guy is.

I remember the total war part about Shanxi. I guess I just didn't think it was that bad because I already knew that was the way turians fought their wars, and I'm interested enough in history for those methods to seem normal by comparison. I'd like to know how the turian military trains its soldiers. You know, how much of that brutality Saren has is common or even taught. Revelation said that he knew more "exotic" ways to torture people, but he prefers the brutally efficient kind. It made me wonder what they're teaching those turians. xD

That moment before Saren killed himself was when I really started to like him too... and then he killed himself. But then I found out about Revelation, and he became the favorite.

I'd like to see Galaxy of Fantasy too. Garrus playing Dragon Age is hilarious though. There was actually a conversation in here once about which class Garrus would play.

I don't think the turian military would be teaching interrogation techniques across the board. I think they would teach them specifically to people whose job it was to interrogate.  I bet turian interrogation tactics are harsh by our standards but not exotic, designed to get information in the most efficient way possible.  I think Saren probably picked most of that stuff up on his own. I don't think turian training is highly imaginative. Lot's of "stay in formation and attack it en mass" type of training if I had to guess. Surprise flanking manevers and covert infiltration teams don't really seem like a turian thing. Elite squad of badass shock trooprs, sure. So more samurai, fewer ninjas, I guess.

I do think they are probably really good at logistics though as they are thorough and efficient and as everybody has to serve in the military at some point, they have a wide pool of talent to choose from. I bet they are especially good in placing people in positions that suit their particular skills and abilites and because of that I think their operations probably run really smoothly. Predictably, but smoothly. So I would imagine that specialized training for noncombat positions is highly efficient from long experience even if it isn't very imaginative or adaptable.

Yeah, that makes sense. The brutally efficient methods do seem more turian. Still, I wonder where Saren learned the more exotic methods if he doesn't really like to use them... maybe just stuff he saw as a Spectre, possibly with some kind of "I never would have thought of that" reaction.

Turian combat sounds like the way I play videogames, except the turians have much more skill. xD "The enemy is there - walk right up to it and shoot it until it dies."

Picking up on a completely random comment:

Aricle wrote...

Also: the relay 'monument' on the Citadel- Kaidan asks if anyone else hears it humming  and says he feels it as a tingle in the back of his teeth.

I remember that bit. But I always thought it was simply a sign that Kaidan could feel that the monument was actually active. I doubt there was any indoctrination involved, since if there was, everyone on the Citadel would be indoctrinated. Plus, the Conduit wasn't built by the Reapers. It was built by the Protheans.

And to make this Garrus related, I just finished my KaidanShep's ME2 run, and she successfully managed to get herself caught by Garrus after the SM (thank you, Thane). Too bad it wasn't my GarrusShep Posted Image

On a more random note, this is the first time that I noticed you could actually see your tech specialist running through the vents...I can't believe I didn't notice it on my 2 previous runs Posted Image

Speaking of Kaidan, isn't Shepard supposed to smile at his pic before the Omega 4 relay? All mine did was stare at it with a rather cryptic expression on her face. Or is the smile a myth?

I also thought it was a little strange that Shepards who don't romance anyone get an extra little scene with Miranda before the O4. Did BW think they needed extra encouragement, since they weren't getting any booty?

And one final random tidbit: Legion's post-LM dialogue appears to be somewhat buggy: first of all, if you don't ask it about the heretics at the start of the convo, that option disappears afterwards. Also, it'll only respond to "tell me more about yourself" the VERY first time you talk to it. If you quit the convo before selecting that option, it'll then respond with "building consensus". And even if you save before talking to it, quit the convo before selecting that option and then reload, it'll still respond with "building consensus". It's really strange.

The good thing about Thane not wanting to catch Shepard - Garrus will catch her instead. The bad side - the other squadmate has to die before Thane will catch her. xD I know, I tried it.

I thought Shepard was just supposed to stare thoughtfully at the picture. I hadn't heard about an extra scene with Miranda. What does she say?

Plus if you finish all the side missions before you recruit Legion then there are no longer enough missions to trigger all his dialog.  I found that out the hard way my first playthrough.

Heh, yeah, I read up on the research Pacifien did. At least, I now know that I won't bother trying to get my ThaneShep caught by Thane. It's a bit sad, really: every other LI can catch Shepard just fine, from what I remember. Or, well...I know it works just fine with Tali, Garrus and Miranda. Can't quite remember the deal with Jack and Jacob.

I thought Shepard was just supposed to stare thoughtfully at the picture. I hadn't heard about an extra scene with Miranda. What does she say?

Well, I heard conflicting reports: some people say their Sheps smiled at the pic, some people say they just looked pensive. There was some theorizing that, in order to get the smile, you shouldn't talk to ANY of the ME2 LIs, even if you don't trigger their romance. Sounds a little far-fetched, which is why I'm wondering if there really is a smile, or if it's a myth.

And the extra scene with Miranda occurs right after you tell Joker that you're going through the relay. She comes up while you're still near the galaxy map and says that she's impressed and that she didn't think it could be done. Then she adds that she'll keep you informed of any changes, but that, if nothing unexpected happens, you'll be at the relay in a couple of hours. And then she salutes. I think that's the only time I've ever seen her salute, actually.

Oh, good point, I never realized that...How much dialogue does Legion have? I'ma try to pace my ThaneShep on her sidequests so she can get to hear it.

I can't recall precisely how many conversations he has, but his last one is the one where he talks about a Dyson Sphere. He's got at least three.  Just save a handful of missions for after the SM and you should be fine plus then you get to run around with post SM Garrus a bit more.  He doesn't say anything, but that's where roleplaying comes in right?

Also, on the smile, is it possibly model issues? I've noticed that some of my Sheps will give big goofy grins and some will only smirk and it seems to have a lot to do with face builds.

WOW! I NEVER got that! I might actually try it on my current dudeshep playthrough. Now that the Liara-DLC has a date, I'm still not sure, if I want him to stay faithful to Liara or to go for Tali. Maybe I make a save and then do both? So i have saves for both and then can play the DLC with both versions! Should be interesting. But I wanna see Miranda salute!!!!

Jack will catch Shepard after Garrus and before Thane, but Jacob will catch Shepard before Garrus (I don't remember where exactly he is on the list).

That's a nice extra scene. I'll get to see it whenever I play my Renegade Adept who has no romance in either game. What scene do Shepards like that get after Miranda talks to them? They can't stare at an empty picture frame, right? xD

Well, DLC should help in that department. I just recently noticed that I hadn't saved after finishing Overlord on my GarrusShep. And with the Liara DLC coming up, that should allow me to have a couple of chats with Legion.

I guess it could be model issues. Although my Shep seemed to grin at both Chakwas and Garrus just fine. And she didn't even look like she was trying to smile during the pic scene. I dunno.

The solution is simple! Make an extra Shep for Tali Posted Image Because if you do cheat on Liara, I would hate to see Tali get splattered against a wall when Liara finds out...

Good point you got there...what happens with Sheps who didn't romance anyone? Maybe you get another extra scene with another crewmember? Chances are it could be Jacob, but Mordin would also work, since he seems to be included more than other squaddies. But who knows?

And thanks for the clarification about catching. So Thane is the only one who has major issues with catching peeps then. Bad Thane. No cookie!

Although, considering how tiny Jack is, she probably needs to put them biotics to work to catch a MaleShep, lol.

Shepard's faithful in love, always depends on the choices of the player. Certainly the first game that I will do, it's for Ashley, then I try other experiments (Liara, Tali, Miranda, etc.). :D

My brother has no doubts about. He says: "Ashley forever!" These are his words. Not by chance, watching his games, he chooses only Ashley as LI (and he remains single in ME2)... XD

That would be interesting if he gets two scenes for having no romance. His playthrough is a long way off though (my current MaleShep playthrough is still being stubborn and needs a second NG+ to make it right). If it's Mordin in an extra scene, I think the poor guy would shout out "I was not flirting with you!" just to be sure. xD Having Mordin give him that conversation about signals and "trying humans" will shake him up a bit.

No problem. I did a lot of suicide mission for science playthroughs, so I remember this stuff. Jack pulled up my MainShep before, but pulling up a MaleShep must look like some heavy lifting, like Shepard catching Grunt. That will happen in later playthroughs because it's just so awesome. And yeah, Thane doesn't want to be bothered with catching Shepard... strange, but at least he does it when the second squadmate dies. I almost expected another squadmate to come out of nowhere and pull her up.

Yes, I also did a lot of suicide mission for science playthroughs. I like to find new dialogues and situations between various characters. :D

One of the strengths of Mass Effect is just to have various possibilities to manage the various characters and plot.

Garrus gets pulled up by most of my Shepards, except for my 1st ManShep playthrough. He pulled up Miranda instead (who died a few seconds later... for science, of course)

OK, I'm at work and can't read all these responses right now, but I can't go back to work without saying the following based on what I read here so far. I would like to reiterate that I felt that Saren AS DEPICTED IN THE BOOK is completely evil. I'm not sure anyone can convince me otherwise. Game Saren, now, seems to be different from Novel Saren, at least for me. If I had only played the game and never read Revelation, I would almost certainly conclude he wasn't completely evil. After reading the book, I just cannot conclude that he's not an uber-evil person.

I think, Saren wasn't actually evil but convinced, that he was doing the right thing. Like one of those people whose lines between good and evil have shifted, if you know what I mean.

On a totally unrelated note, my dudeshep decided to take two mixed drinks in Kasumi's room and got this comment from EDI xD made me wonder, if he'd pissed his pants xD
