I finished my new Shepard ME1 PT last night; at this point, to finish the last achievements, I'd have to play as a soldier and travel with Ash and Liara everywhere- and be a Renegade if I want the Renegade star. Don't know about that, as that is out of character for all of the Shepards- and me. Might be fun to go so far out of character, though.
You could always use the Lorik glitch to get your Renegade achievement. That's how I got it.
You basically need just enough Intimidate points (I think it's 5?) to be able to use the Intimidate option in the convo where you have to get him to testify. So use it, then talk to him again and pick a different convo option (eg. asking about Benezia), then pick "another question". You'll get the option to make him testify again. So just keep doing that until you get your achievement. It doesn't take long at all. And you can always save before you talk to him if you don't want to keep your Renegade bar afterwards.

I do believe though, that he got his geth arm before he met Sovereign. I mean, he got all the information from Dr. Quian and then started his own investigation about the ancient alien artifacts. During his research and travels I bet he encountered the Heretics (I am not using the name geth here, on purpose) that were already working with Sovereign and lost his arm but once Sovereign learned, that Saren could be a useful tool for him, he used technology to rebuild his arm. It's just a theory. Besides, I lack a lot of sleep, am overworked already although I just got back from my holiday and started working on Thursday -.- and the weather makes me crumpy. So if I don't make any sense, just throw caffeine at me ^.^

The only thing we really know about his geth arm is that he got it after Revelation, so everything else is just speculation. Your theory is no crazier than mine, which is basically "he woke up one day and had a geth arm, did not question it and for a while he felt like it had always been there." xD It's fun to come up with theories, but knowing the truth is better. If it wasn't for the fact that Saren didn't use biotics in Revelation (and some recent indoctrination info from Retribution), I would have guessed that Saren was a biotic long before Sovereign.

@ JulianP: I did upload two versions of the Terra Firma encounter with Garrus to get both dialogue trains, I'll have to fix the 1st one, some kind of upload error- but here's the one that is more 'Renegade' as far as how I talk to Saracino. This one is where Garrus talks about being a soldier. http://www.youtube.c...u/0/vSqPb4Z5nOQ

Being rather new to the idea of fanfic myself, I've found myself having conflicting feelings about it. One the one hand, I want to try writing it, especially since I have such a hard time making myself sit down to write in the first place, but then there's part of me that can't quite get over the stigma of it all - and yet the next thing I know, I'll think to myself that hey, the people who write for TV shows and novelizations have often been fans who happened to get paid to write "fanfics." And, as a friend pointed out, a great deal of revered classical literature (think the Illiad) was "fanfiction" in that people elaborated on existing characters and tales.
At the moment, I think I agree with the idea that it's fine for people to have fun writing self-indulgent fanfics, but yes, it would be best to have it clearly presented as such. But I'm just not sure I'd want to risk putting a really self-indulgent fic online for people to critique...
Out of curiosity, I've recently skimmed quite a few Garrus fanfics and a couple of Nihlus ones. Some were very evocative and imaginative extensions of canon. More than a few were unabashed sexual fantasy, which I really don't know how to approach - especially when the non-sexual parts are actually kind of clever! Most didn't spell-check too well.
The one that made me feel the most conflicted was one I randomly skimmed, a two-part, multi-chapter Nihlus x femShep fic called "Love of Turians" / "Lover of Turians" by one "Siha Krios." Shameless and often gratuitous sexual fantasy in which Nihlus is busy evaluating *ahem* more than Shepard's Spectre potential; after his inevitable demise, Shepard must deal with grief and conflicted feelings as she forms a new romantic relationship with Garrus. I couldn't help but feel that on some level, it was the author's way of working out that conflict of wanting to romance Garrus but actually liking Nihlus better...
The sex scenes were disturbingly fascinating in that they combined totally over-the-top, bodice-ripping cliches with an occasional sprinkling of touching or sensual details that proved surprisingly memorable. One minute I'd be all "that's kind of sweet!" and the next moment, "that only happens in porn!"
It was unabashed self-insertion combined with flashes of insight into feelings of grief and betrayal. Whenever I wanted to write it off for overall lazy editing, there would be a clever turn of phrase or patch of intriguing imagery.
I don't know what to do with that, and I can't even decide whether I enjoyed it or whether I want to unread it. Maybe the only cure is to try my own hand it at and experience it from the other side.

The conversation has moved on and this is a bit off-topic to mention anyway, but I absolutely hate how the ME Wiki doesn't use citation. There have been a few times where I've seen the Wiki state something as fact when, if you trace the source, it's only speculation.
QTF! I wish they would do that sort of thing I once saw on some Doctor Who fandom site where not only is every piece of information cited, but also color-coded to represent different types of sources which people may or may not consider part of their personal canon.

Concerning fanfic in general, there is a LOT of crap out there, hence the stigma associated with the genre: even if you've got your background premade for you, not everyone can write, not by a long shot. In fact, I'd say the majority of fanfic is bad, with only a select few gems. It's usually a combination of writing in a rush, not spellchecking, overusing clichés and being too self-indulgent. Now, that shouldn't discourage you from writing, but it doesn't change the statistics. Still, critiques are usually good, because people are either lazy or afraid to post criticism. So the surest sign you're doing something wrong is if people DON'T review your fic.
Still, knowing that, there's nothing stopping you from giving your imagination free reign. You don't have to do self-insertion or write outrageous smut if that's not your thing, but if you do have a storyline in your head, why not give it a try?
On the topic of dreams, I haven't had any Garrus ones, unfortunately...but I've had Alistair, of all people, feature in one of my dreams lately. Kinda made me go

It was a sad dream. Garrus was very sad and anger when he was looking at me
On to the fanfic topic-----in a story I write, I always put it up on BOLD that I want people to give me reviews and any criticisms they want. Constructive anyway.
Still......nothing.....It always takes awhile and usually after hundred people. you get a review unless people extremely love your story.
But it seems they only seem to like stories with romance(or sex scenes) in it or self-inserts *which I find oddd but there is this one self-insert story that is really good. It is called Masses to Masses. You guys have to read it XDDD It involves Garrus in his early years. I like anyway XDD

I think I had quite a few Mass Effect dreams so far. I can't remember them though. I suck at recalling most dreams. I remember one dream I had, well, actually it wasn't a dream. When I started playing ME I once went to bed after about 14 hours of gaming and when I turned off the lights, I saw those red aiming triangles EVERYWHERE around me in the dark. lol.
Fanfic wise I am still working on Darkangel, re-did all chapters and uploaded chapter 15 during my vacation. Currently I am working on chapter 16. I don't think I see myself in this particular Shepard. But I love writing her and her process of turning into a renegade xD

Thanks, I guess it makes sense that fanfiction as a genre would tend to lend itself to ... excesses. Discipline probably not a top priority, huh? If one were to form a profile of the average fan based on the fanfics, you'd think all we ever did was lounge around in Shepard's cabin producing prodigious puddles of bodily fluids while fantasizing about the wicked sharpness of those turian talons as they "click" on the floor.
The ability to write sex without being smutty must be very rare indeed.
If anything in my sandbox ever gets turned into something halfway decent, I'll have to ask you to read it

Mine? I just have one chapter in it. I'm writing about my Shepard and putting my little twists in it. I know alot people are just going to roll their eyes at it but I'm writing it for fun. I'm going to try my best and keep characters in character. I'm also trying to make and feel that Shepard is a Marine woman. XDDD Weee
I will link it(second chapter is almost done. Very detailed and longer than this one XDD) : http://www.fanfictio...1/Angel_Shepard
In planning: I am als working on a story called No Regrets where this veteran merc, Jamie Summers becomes one of Garrus' squad. (I'm still in the process of writing the first chapter in Jentha's pov)
Here is the Masses to Masses one written by someone else: http://www.fanfictio...asses_to_Masses

Hmm. It all makes me wonder whether there's something to that argument one hears every now and then that many women read (and write?) romance / sex for titillation the way guys (and girls, yes) view visual porn... I wonder how one draws the line as an author between stirring up appropriate emotional responses in the reader and just... titillating them.

There's a hiliarious comment on YouTube for one of those Garrus' Scars videos that goes something like: "Buy expensive machine that fixes facial scars, forget to tell Garrus."
I'd never thought of it from the angle of the machine only working on humans though.

The first time I played Mass Effect, I didn't notice any of the different things about Saren aside from his cool glowing eyes. That refund turian was so right about all of them looking the same to me at first (or at least similar). When I was waiting a long time for Legion to do his robot dance, that was when I realized how much his arms looked like Saren's geth arm. I'm always staring at Saren's face when he's on the screen, so when I read on the forums that the Council was oblivious about the tubes going through him and the geth arm, I thought, "How could I miss that?" xD His eyes are distracting.kglaser wrote...
I'll tell you this...that arm looks pretty cool. I was just staring at it the whole time he was monologuing on Virmire. XD
Garrus dreams: I had one before ME2 came out that Garrus would be a squadmate. He and my Shepard were fighting in a room that looked kind of like those circular levitating platforms the Collectors use. It was a lot brighter and wasn't levitating, but the circle pattern was there.
