It could even be somewhere in between facepaint and tattoo. I imagine that a tattoo the way humans know them would be hard to give to a turian, at least on the metallic plates. Who knows? Their form of a tattoo could just be permanent facepaint. xD

The surfaces of the plates look to me like a sort of tough hide with miniscule metallic particles suspended in it.  Might still be tattooable even though I'm in the facepaint camp for now, but the ink would have to not react with the metal??

Now this is surely idle speculation, but I always wondered why Garrus' scars look reddish rather than bluish.  Wouldn't blue make more sense?  Or maybe some of the metal oxidized on contact with the atmosphere and "rusted" on him?

A "rust-type" reaction would explain the reddish coloring... even if it's weird. ;)

This kind of science is not my best subject, so I really have no idea. It's hard to come up with an explanation remembering that alien science doesn't necessarily follow the same rules humans know about. The color choice might have just been to make the scar to look more "human" to us, easier to recognize as a scar. When I think of the fact that his blood is dark blue, my first guess is that it would look black when dried out and stained on his faceplates, and that his skin would look burned from the rocket (and however a burn would effect faceplates) - it could have just looked like a strange mark on his face instead of a scar, and the reaction should be "Poor Garrus! D:" rather than "...What's wrong with his face?"

But I agree that rust sounds like a good theory.

You know, the metagame explanation is usually the most sensible one ;)

"What's wrong with his face" LOL, that was my reaction on first seeing Nihlus.

And I guess not all metals would react to form red.  If Garrus has copper in his face, he coud form a patina, or tarnish if he had silver - or even develop a rainbow sheen if he came into contact with liver of sulphur

Fortunately, alien biology still seems to use the same elements.

Yeah, even though I wonder about the reasons why Saren's body type and fringe are so different from other turians, I think the best explanation is the metagaming one, that they did it to make the villain stand out in a really cool way. But I think my favorite theories about his side fringe are the ones I've seen here in the Garrus threads - fringe length is equal to the awesomeness of the turian, it's the turian version of an evil mustache, and it gives him wi-fi reception.

My first reaction when I saw Nihlus was something to the effect of, "He looks so cool!" Then Saren came along and I thought, "It's another one, with glowing eyes!" By the time Shepard recruited Garrus, I was glad to have a turian on the team because I always thought they were awesome. He was my favorite squadmate from the very start.

I don't understand much about the reactions to different metals, but Garrus with rainbow faceplates is a hilarious thought. xD

@ Kim Shepard:

I like the wi-fi theory best {smilie} even if I don't buy it! Pretty awesome blue-glowy evil antenna mustache he's got there.

@ Steel Dancer:

HAHA! Where'd you get that?

@SteelDancer: That TuriGel post looks familiar. Was it written by someone on the Garrus thread?

@JulianP: The wi-fi theory was from one of the old Garrus threads. xD And if I remember correctly, the evil mustache theory was from Lemonwizard.

I agree with Cia. I can't imagine that Garrus would want to unload anything on Shepard when things are still pretty new and possibly shaky. I think he's feeling like he screws up everything he touches at the moment so I doubt he'd feel confident enough with his connection to Shepard to start offloading stuff. I also think he wouldn't want to add to Shepard's burdens since she's got the whole galaxies fate riding on her future missions.

I think the bulk of the ME3 Garrus/Shep relationship will be the phase where the minutia of their personal lives - family issues included - will come to the forefront.  I love the ME2 loyalty missions, and pew-pew-pew-ing is fun, but I'd love a personal side-mission where you meet his family.  Of course, this being a shooter, they can work in something to smack with bullets along the way (ZOMG Batman Garrus! Someone is robbing the Palavan bank!), but the core of the mission would be your interactions with Garrus and his family.  This also provides a scenario to include turian/human prejudicism, which is also something I would love to see addressed in ME3.

Ha, I've never looked forward to racism before, but there you have it.

I agree. A personal mission like that would be great in ME3.

A question, because I haven't played the DLC: Shepard knows all this stuff about his mother from the Shadow Broker's dossiers, but hasn't discussed it with Garrus, right? ...Which means that if Garrus decides to talk about this in ME3, I haven't really missed anything?

@Kim -

Garrus says the same looping dialogue if you go back to the Normandy. I wouldn't worry about it, unless they create another DLC that allows you to address it pre-ME3.

Also, for those who have played through LotSB with a Liara-manced character, when does she say that line about Garrus calibrating more than the guns? Was she saying it good humoredly or in a b*tchy fashion?

That's good. I'm trying not to worry about missing out on too much leading up to ME3, DLC being required, having too many "canon" decisions that don't fit my Shepards being made, and all that. If there is a conversation/mission about this with Garrus, and the lack of DLC doesn't effect my Shepards, I'm fine with that.

I think that's proof that the creators of Mass Effect are reading these threads. xD They've seen the "Can it wait a minute? I'm busy calibrating my Commander" jokes.

When I first read a comment about it, I thought it was a joke... but it's actually something Liara says, I think when Shepard says she's moved on with Garrus. I'm not sure what the tone of that conversation was because I haven't played it myself.

From what I understand there is a moment in the DLC where you can talk to Liara bout your relationship (that is, your relationship with Liara, not your new LI as the case may be).  She apparently will throw out a line if you cheated on her referencing the new LI, and Garrus's is something along the lines of "So I heard the guns aren't the only thing Garrus has been calibrating".

I haven't been able to find a vid of it, so I don't know the tone in which it is said...she didn't seem too mad at my renegadeShep who left her for Thane, though.
