In that vein, I think I would actually enjoy having a little episode in the next game that's like the "fire-team leader" thing, only with more exploration of what Garrus is actually doing and the chance to postivitely influence his character arc if Shepard trusts him to make decisions.  As in, maybe something where you must accomplish the mission in tandem with a second team either by letting Garrus come into his own, or by shutting him down, (or something in between), and the choice affects his outcome as a character.  Maybe he even screws up something if you delegate a lot of authority, allowing us to see what he's learned about dealing with failure from ME2.   Or maybe if you don't let him do stuff, he goes and does something risky but brilliant, and then has to deal with the consequences and is in danger of going disturbingly renegade or cripplingly conservative.

I like this idea. :) If something like this happens in ME3... that would be awesome.

Indeed, as far as I'm concerned, Garrus should be second in command. He and Tali have been there the longest, Shepard (or at least the paragon Shepard) admits to trusting them more then anyone else, why the devil weren't they given the parts Miranda and Jacob got? Its very frustrating, especially if you hate Cerberus as much as I do.

I understand those two not getting a large role in the first game, a new series, no ones seen them before, and they probably weren't expected to be as popular as they got, perfectly understandable. And I'll even give them the second game. Maybe they were only popular with a small group of xenophiles, give them a romance and everything will be fine. But so help me, if in the third game Bioware doesn't give these two the "most trusted friends" role they deserve, they clearly have their head up their cloaca's.

I think, Garrus and Shep are equals, more so in the second game. Only because Sidonis betrayed him which led to the death of Garrus' team, doesn't mean he hasn't accomplished anything yet. I mean, look at Shep for example. Decision on Virmire, gets one squad mate killed. Decision on the Citadel, either getting the Council or lots of humans killed. Throughout the entire game, ALTHOUGH Shep is on a huge mission, there's a lot of things that can be considered both a screw up and a win at the same time, depending on how you play the game. So Shep isn't necessarily the better character with way more potential. Garrus was in C-Sec because his father thought it was a good idea. Shep, depending on the background, has no parents to push him/her around whatsoever. And if you choose the spacer story, you only end up in the Alliance, because of the rents, go figure! Both, Alliance and C-Sec have this red tape. In my opinion, the second game actually increases the potential of both characters, Garrus' and Shep's. I mean, they can basically do whatever they want. No rules, no regulations. Just do the mission and the rest is a "fun ride" throughout the galaxy. Personally, I don't think, there's a need for Garrus leaving the crew to reach his full potential. As for Liara, I can see why they did the Shadow Broker thing. I mean, Liara, just like the VS, wasn't in ME2 which means, she wasn't part of the entire suicide mission thing. She didn't have a chance to evolve within this story arc, like the other characters did. Hence why she needed her own story (in the form of a DLC) and I actually am sure, that we will get something similar for the Virmire survivor, because after all, we have yet to see their development, that has happened in the past two years, so their coming back in the third game will make sense. but that's just my opinion, from how it makes sense to me.

The last game should focus on the battle against the Reapers. Attaching all loose strings and puzzling all pieces together you've collected throughout the first two games and the DLCs. Bioware has said, that there will be a lot more RPG in the third game, at least, that's what I think, I remember from one of the interviews. So I am guessing, you will have to pull all your aces and charm/intimidate options, to rally as many allies as possible for the final battle. It's just my opinion though, there's really no need to go spreading it around xD

I like some of the Cerberus people (mostly TIM and Kai Leng)... unfortunately, not the ones on the Normandy. xD Garrus does seem to be more of a friend to Shepard than anyone else in the way that Shepard can't really get on his bad side or say too many mean things to him. That's not the case with Tali, even though most of our Shepards are probably nice to her.

as for the XO thing: I think, second in command, is overrated. Look at the duties an XO has, I rather let Miranda do all this bs work, than Garrus. He may deserve he status itself, but not the crap work that comes with it.

Exactly. Miranda can handle all of the paperwork and technical stuff that Garrus wouldn't want to deal with anyway. Garrus can be second in command on the battlefield.

Nonsense, many women are great at being gay on the internets (yaoi, maleslash, etc... etc...) so they would be great members of the Gay for Garrus club.

I thought the Shadow Broker's comment about Garrus not reaching his full potential under Shepard had more to do with Garrus's personality than any flaw in his relationship with Shepard. We've already seen that he's capable of doing great things and kicking @ss when Shepard's not around, but Garrus tends to focus on his failures instead of his successes. Yes, he managed to get a team together through sheer charisma and skill, gave hope to some of the weak on Omega, and pissed off the three largest and most powerful gangs. But what matters most to Garrus is that he failed his team by "letting" them get killed, and that if Shepard hadn't shown up to save him he would have failed his team again by dying before he could avenge their deaths. For all his talk about how he's not a very good turian, he's actually a really good turian.

After reading the info in LotSB, it really seems like Garrus has zero faith in himself, and he prefers to take a backseat when Shepard's around because that way there's the least chance he'll fail anyone else. I thought that's where the whole "not reaching his full potential" came from. Which is why I hope Shepard will at least be able to address that in ME3, or hack his visor to endlessly scroll IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT or something, because pretty much all of my Shepards consider Garrus to be their XO, as well.

The second in command or XO on Normandy is mostly just a secretary. For this work Miranda would be great if you could actualy trust her (She wanted a controll chip in Shepards brain you know) but that young hothead Garrus on the other hand would get bored in seconds.

And off topic: Its nice to see more than me likes to be represented by a casteless of that most awesome race: dwarves (well okay turians are equally awesome of course).

That thing where he's in conflict with what he's internalized of his culture yet still dedicated to its ideals is a huge part of what makes Garrus so fascinating, especially since that's something that most of us probably experience in one way or another.  Glad he didn't go commit one of those turian honor suicides!

Yep, have garrus come with you to be another squad leader and leave miranda to do her thing on the ship.

To a point I agree with Pacifen, though I wouldn't want him to completely leave the normandy while the reaper threat is out and about. Like maybe have more missions similar to the suicide mission and have garrus lead another group of squad mates to cover you or something.

Miranda's second in command of the Normandy which has a considerable crew of Cerberus personnel. That doesn't make her second in command of Shepard's Dirty Dozen, which might as well be Garrus's role.

Yeah I agree with you there. Though I would probably have him fight by my side anyway....just because.

I want to destroy the reapers in style.

Okay I've come back here to get some Garrus love, *Shakes of hater slime* been roaming around the forums and some of the groups today and this should be renamed the love thread, not just the Garrus and turian love and turian discussion thread. You have no hate here.

My copy of Retribution finally arrived in the mail today, super excited cos I overheard there is a female turian character mentioned.

@lovgreno: Yeah, the dwarves are the best race in DA:O. I was hesitant to play them at first because I've never been a big fan of dwarves and I thought they were kind of ugly, but I was completely hooked after I got my first Dwarf Noble out of Orzammar. And things just got more awesome when I came back to Orzammar with that character. Good times.

As for what will happen in ME3, I personally hope they don't do the whole "recruit each race so you can fight the Big Bad together". It would follow the Bioware RPG Cliché Chart a bit too closely. Besides, Shepard has pretty much spent the first two games recruiting people to his/her cause already (the Rachni in ME1, the krogan too if you let Wrex live, the whole team in ME2, and now Liara with the Shadow Broker's resources). I know they'll probably still go in the direction of having the entire galaxy ganging up to fight the Reapers, but I hope they'll surprise us with the story. And they seem to be pretty good at listening to what the fans want, so hopefully there will be more dialogue with squadmates and Shepard gets a nice little personal sidestory with the LI.

Awesome ME2 moment of the day: On his loyalty mission, Garrus and my Infiltrator Shep sniped one of the YMIR mechs in the head at the same time and it went nuclear and the explosion completely obliterated the other mech and it was glorious. "Scoped and dropped", indeed. :police:
