Still here? Okay, good, 'cause I'm going to gush about Garrus. XD
FIrst off...I didn't think there was a way for me to love Garrus' character any more than I already did...but now I do. Seriously, this guy thinks he's a bad turian? I think he exemplifies the best of turian traits. Loyalty, selflessness, dedication. He really is the "badass with a heart of gold" that one of the devs described him as. Learning he had a sister (Solana) was absolutely awesome. I really want to meet her, she sounds very spirited, and I felt sooo bad about his mom.
The conversation he has with his sister is also VERY telling about his character. They have absolutely NO idea what he's been doing or going through. It just makes me want to give Garrus a big hug.
He hasn't told them he quit his C-Sec job, willingly...they think he "lost" it.
He hasn't told them he went to Omega to become a "guardian," to try and root out corruption and criminals and bring hope to the downtrodden...they think it was just contract-work out in some-odd location after "losing" his C-Sec job.
He hasn't told them he gathered a "band of brothers" to take out these elements and that they were betrayed and he, subsequently, was almost killed...they think he just failed in his "contract work."
He hasn't told them he has horrible scars across half his face, with cybernetics keeping the rest together...they just think he's too ashamed of his supposed "failures" to show his face in a video call.
He wants to help his mother and tries to pay...his sister thinks its an empty offer. After all, how can he have any money if he keeps "failing" at life? He doesn't get upset...he apologizes when she says "not to pretend to care." He really can afford to help, though, but what can he say? He can't say he really does have the resources to help, because then they're going to ask: "Where'd you get it and how?" Which means revealing more of what really happened.
And he doesn't want to reveal what really happened. Why? Because it would terrify or worry his family a great deal. It's apparent to me their family cares for each other greatly and, being selfless, he would rather they believe him a "failure at life" rather than have them know that he's been zipping around the galaxy with Shepard, fighting the REAPERS and their puppets.
So to help his mom indirectly, he gets help from Mordin and sends in collector tissue samples and a generous (anonymous) donation to a salarian company developing a new treatment for his mother's condition, AND gets his mother accepted into the program with all fees waived. Because their family is obviously NOT very well off...the treatment isn't covered (by their insurance) and is very costly.
Garrus definitely does exemplify the best of turian traits, I think. Even if he might not believe it himself, his actions speak far louder than his broken self-image.
