He'd have to file them (if turians have claws) or REALLY mess up the calibrations. And since the Collector Ship is dead in my game, I'm guessing he made no errors in his calibrations.

What I never understood in various fanfics is why having Turians bite is such a common element. Trying to think of it from an evolutionary standpoint led me to some not nice places. Have these people writing these fanfics never been bitten by a cat? Motherf*ckin' hurts, man. And that's before it abscesses.
That's right. Turian bites abscess. Write that into your fanfic.
Yeah, I don't get the biting, or the purring, or the growling, or the continual mention of "turian instincts" this and "turian instincts" that or the obsession with animal-type dominance. Just replace "turian" with any human racial type and you'll probably get what I'm saying. I mean sure, they're aliens. However I don't think "instinct" would come into play as much as "culture," and the only time we ever see a turian do something remotely animal-like is when Saren roars--and he's a nut in the first place. Point being? Turians are people, not animals. I figure their romantic preferences have a pretty wide range even if turians aren't all that individualistic. You know, they're so disciplined and all in public, but those personal freedoms? Yeah, I'd guess that the average turian enjoys those to the fullest extent.
And back to the issue of biting, with the kind of teeth turians have? Yeah, that'd be bad. And their talons are, from what I've heard from the book-readers (I plan to get the books eventually), very dangerous too. So digging in talons and biting would make for a very uncomfortable experience indeed--and I never get the impression from the romance cut scene that Garrus is planning on anything rough in the first place, not when he's stroking Shep's arm with the backs of his fingers while wearing gloves. Shep can take more damage than most people, but digging in those teeth and claws could still hit an artery and kill her.
I guess worse than the biting or the animalistic behavior is the idea that somehow a male turian is instinctively insanely jealous and protective of his mate, or that Garrus would seduce Shep after nearly coming to blows with her. I just don't see that kind of behavior jiving with what we know about turian culture--or Garrus for that matter. Garrus would more likely step aside than attack any potential rival, and he's definitely not going to fly off the handle because someone takes an interest in Shep's physique in his presence. And remember that turians are all about personal freedom and the good of the whole. Relationship drama is bad for everyone caught up in it--it interferes with concentration and therefore with your duty. But that's beside the point--the kind of person who'll freak out like that over someone just looking at you, or unknowingly flirting with you, is not a good potential mate/boyfriend/whatever. That kind of possessiveness often goes along with a very controlling personality. "No you can't hang out with that guy who was your friend before because he might hit on you." As for the violence-leading-to-sex thing... Yeah. Most of us aren't going to be turned on by being threatened. If you are, then please seek psychological help.
The list of things like that goes on and on, some of them more because for Garrus specifically they seem out of character--forcing himself on Shepard, for instance (WHY? I mean aside from that he "never considered interspecies intercourse before," he respects her more than anyone and considers her his only friend, so I just can't see him doing that regardless...). But, I guess, if that's what the fic-writer likes, then let them like it. It's just one of the reasons I dislike the vast majority of smut (SOMETIMES you run across something that actually has some value other than just being degrading or tasteless porn, but for the most part I find that T-rated or completely non-romance fics T and up are better).

So I cut some slack. I may roll my eyes when I see "starts a rumblin' purrrrrrr" or what not, but if the rest of the story is good, then I consider myself entertained.

It's one thing if there's just nipping with those "lips" because that wouldn't break the skin. It's quite another to have inch-and-a-half-long fangs embedded in your flesh. Unless Shep's a serious masochist I think that would kill the mood really fast.
Edit to add: And I still think that turians should have teeth in the front. It really does seem like if the models did, then they'd probably have clipping issues with the "lips" moving. Even if you don't agree with the comic in that regard, the fact that their "lips" have some flexibility means that the fronts of their mouths would be bad for biting. For a sea creature that eats soft prey (squid namely) this is an advantageous setup -- a lot of bottlenosed whales (not dolphins) have teeth sort of like that, when they have teeth at all. It channels the food into the mouth. However, for turians, who are apparently terrestrial even if they may have evolved from avians, as a predatory creature it makes sense to be able to bite into the prey from the front of the mouth, unless they've managed to breed the front teeth out since they stopped having to hunt, but I don't buy that theory. This also means that they should be able to open their mouths a lot wider than we've seen them do in order to sink those teeth into said prey.

I've actually seen people be quite dexterous with long nails. The nails simply become an extension of the fingers; rather than press a button with the end of your finger, you press it with the nail. And I suspect Turian talons are considerably stronger than human nails, so, say, if a Turian were to open a particularly stubborn window using just his talons for leverage, he'd get a better result than whenSialater wrote...
Have you ever tried to type a lot with long nails? Even on a keyboard designed for your hands it's not easy. I type for a living and I screw up more when my nails are beyond a certain length. I'd imagine Cerberus didn't have turians in mind for the design of the Normandy any more than the Empire had Wookies in mind when designing shuttle craft.
I suspect the limitation Garrus is going to find on the Normandy is the holographic keypad expected him to have five digits per hand.

The growling stuff works for me because there's something inherently masculine about it, and I find that attractive. But combine that with the claws and the teeth, and all you need is a well-placed "Clever girl" before you find yourself in velociraptor-porn territory.

But that takes practice. (And most secretaries I've met keep their nails short because they don't really become an extension and it slows them down.)
But yes, the missing two fingers would be more difficult.

I still think that turians should have teeth in the front. It really does seem like if the models did, then they'd probably have clipping issues with the "lips" moving--their mouths aren't the same as human or batarian mouths. Even if you don't agree with the comic in that regard, the fact that their "lips" have some flexibility means that the fronts of their mouths would be bad for biting. For a sea creature that eats soft prey (squid namely) this is an advantageous setup -- a lot of bottlenosed whales (and dolphins for that matter, but I'm not talking about them) have teeth sort of like that, when they have teeth at all. It channels the food into the mouth. And dolphins have teeth only on the sides of their beaks, but they hunt fish, not terrestrial prey. However, for turians, who are apparently terrestrial even if they may have evolved from avians, as a predatory creature it makes sense to be able to bite into the prey from the front of the mouth, unless they've managed to breed the front teeth out since they stopped having to hunt, but I don't buy that theory. This also means that they should be able to open their mouths a lot wider than we've seen them do in order to sink those teeth into said prey--especially so if they really don't have front teeth. The teeth are just totally the wrong configuration as it is for land-based prey, even looking at dinosaurs (they had front teeth and usually longer mouths!).

I'm a fan of turian nuzzling. I think it works in context with the turian/human pairing, it certainly won't injure either party, and it's just a ridiculously cute visual.

Growling isn't really a masculine thing, though. It's an animal or angry person thing. My (female) pet parakeet growls when she's playing or annoyed. I had a female Border collie growing up who'd growl at any other dog. I've been known to make growl-like sounds when sufficiently irritated/agitated/prepared to put a fist through my computer monitor after being unable to save that last file I was working on. So if Garrus were growling at my Shep in bed I think she'd be a bit worried that she'd done something terribly wrong or put her hands someplace she really shouldn't have.
Anyway, I love talking with you people (and I know I'm debating a lot but like I said, whatever floats your boat. I am admittedly grumpy in the first place), but I can't stay up all night to do so like I have every other night this week! So, if I don't reappear before then, happy Independence Day to those of you in the U.S. and have a great weekend to the rest of you.

Edit: I know growling isn't gender specific, but I think it's a trait often associated with anger, which is associated with testosterone, which is associated with penis (har, just had to throw that in there). But this all relates to opinion, of course, and I understand where yer coming from.

Could also just be the artists/designers didn't think that far ahead into their evolutionary theory to think about how they ate.
At this point, we know their faces are covered in plates. The texture/feel/flexibility of said plates? More than a metal plate, less than a deflated football, I'd think.

But you know that does bring up the question of why turians have such a long thick tongue. Maybe for rasping meat off of bones? Particularly in hard-to-reach areas on large prey carcasses?
... Yeah I'm overthinking this. Time for bed.

I'm happy for people to say "I don't like this or that" but being insulted for including what may or may not be canon, or simple differences in alien biology is unfair on most people who just want to write or draw someething that has moved them. One of the artists on DA was roasted for daring to include breasts on a great rendition of a female turian - often its opinion and not critique that causes these flaming posts, the artist was quite prepared to suceed that turian females don't have breasts but it was what the artist wanted to draw at the time - but the troll flaming continued.
The biting thing I get, a turn off if it leads to hurt, but fun if its teasing and playful. Personally I don't like the depiction of extreme violence leading to passionate sex, especially when it appears non-consensual, it goes places that I am not comfortable with, luckily I haven't come across any fanfics depicting this, plenty of OOC but not this.

Would the teeth in front be the same as the ones we see on the sides? I'm not a dental expert, but I know teeth shape/size can vary dependent upon their location in the mouth. If the teeth are as equally sharp (and long) in the front than I would think this also would impact on how long their tongues would be - a long tongue would be in serious danger of accidental amputation.

I personally don't associate "anger" with "masculinity." Frankly I'm a hot-tempered person and I'm definitely feminine. Although I guess this does kind of explain why society is more accepting or even embracing of characters like Edward Cullen in popular media. To me, when Garrus lets his temper get the better of him, that's a turn-off rather than a turn-on. It's disturbing to me to watch him beat up Harkin even if Harkin deserves it, and to hear him rant about how he needs to kill someone in cold blood out of vengeance--or justice, as he claims. I can accept his temper and his disagreeing with my more paragon Shepards, as long as he's sufficiently in control of that hot-headedness. So maybe that's why I don't get the "growl" thing or the "nearly deciding to attack Shepard for the purpose of harm but turning it into seduction at the last minute" thing being considered so hot by other people.
Anyway. Sleep now, for real!

I'm not a fan of the kissing, sure, but if someone does kissing in their fic, just like I said in NSFW, I can roll with it. One thing isn't going to ruin the reading experience for me. XD A combination? Snow balls get into effect, etc.
I've read plenty of fics with kissing, biting, growling, purring, nipping, and other human like things, I don't care, if it's well written, I'm game. I've only been squicked out once... and well, that was my own damn fault. XD
And while sure, I've heard the whole "the rated T stuff is so much better most of the time" argument before... eh. All fan fiction is hit or miss. Just because of it's rating, doesn't denote what's going to be better or worse. It just means some is looked a bit more harshly, or closely, than others. There's exceptions out there, and there are shining examples too. But it's the nature of the beast.
/shrug
In the end, while sure, it's all fiction, it's also all entertainment. And also... speculation. Everyone's got a brain, and six different opinions to go with it.
I'll still love people in the morning. XD

Pretty sure the designers didn't stop to think about evolutionary design when they came up with various aliens. Or if they did, it was all very rudimentary as opposed to figuring out every detail of the environment that led that alien's design to be the most advantageous.silentstephi wrote...

However, while you're not going to find direct correlations between a species on earth to that of an alien, shape and function can be somewhat ascertained. What use is a finely sharp tooth? What can a sharp tooth do that a blunted one can't? It can shred and tear. What can a carapace do? It can protect. Protect what? I don't know, as we don't really see a turian duck his head into it very much. Something else. Perhaps slamming a carapace in brutal combat was once considered teh smexy.
I used to think giraffes had long necks so they could reach tree tops, but have you seen what they actually do with those things?
