Well, maybe he found out that Mordin had given Shep vids or something and then just figured she could handle it as she really is the one who seems the calmest and collected throughout the whole thing.  Plus, my Shep is the sort who would totally do research no matter what Garrus said so I always just chalked it up to him thinking "Shep never goes into anything blind, she'll know what to do and I should stop panicking."  Granted that wouldn't work with all Sheps, but it works with mine.  But even something like him thinking "Shep always figures out what to do" could work for pretty much any Shep especially if he did try watching something and was totally weirded out and/or confused.  Maybe he just shrugged his shoulders and decided to leave it up to fate and Shep's determination.

"Shrugging his shoulders" seems inconsistent for Garrus, to me. I mean, you said earlier that he seems to be the kind of person who goes into detailed preparations for missions, and his willingness to do research demonstrates the same kind of approach. It's pretty much the first thing he says when the topic of sex comes up. I'm sure he's committed to getting the actual process right, it's the finer points of courtship that are probably a bit too much for him to handle (shades of grey again), which would be why I can see him not watching vids, but totally consulting a detailed anatomical diagram.

Also, "shrugging his shoulders" sounds a bit too unmotivated for me, like he's not really interested in making things work, and that Shep should do all the heavy lifting. Me no likes that.

I agree on that. Although I have to admit, that it never occured to me that Garrus is actually referring to the finer details of courtship here. Damn awesome turian, stop distracting me during that scene xD

But you are right. I do think he did his research on the whole cross-species-intercourse thing. Definitely more than my Shep did lol. But his mind is too worried to mess the "getting it started" thing up because the moment he's there, he realizes "damn, when did letting off steam turn me into a babbling mess?" xD

I don't mean it like he is indifferent.  I mean it more like he is worried and possibly confused and not sure exactly what to do.  So he latches onto what has worked for him in the past and to his knowledge that Shepard doesn't give up and that he trusts her.  That's what I mean.  I mean "shrugging his shoulders" in the since that I don't think he is going to keep watching vids for hours and hours if they aren't doing something for him.  When something isn't working right, Garrus definitely has a tendency to latch onto something else altogether that he thinks will work better.

And I already explained in NSFW how I think he and Shep would already have a basic idea of the others' anatomy. I think that is ME common knowledge.  Now the particulars of the best way to make that anatomy work together is up in the air, but I still don't think it would be too much for him to rely on Shep some there once he was sure that biologically things would work.  I don't think he had a specific gameplan beyond relying on what had worked for him in the past (wine, music, compliments, etc.)  I think he knew/read enough to determine the major biological hurdles and then decided to wait for Shep to figure out the particulars.  I mean, she is the one who has been making all the advances here.  She's the one who seems calm and collected.  Why not rely on her?

I'm not going to discourage anyone from having that idea or wanting that for their Sheps.   The lads in the Tali group have a whole Shep/Tali adopted child story going on, its quite entertaining.

Because if you're enthusiastic about something, you also do your part. Indifference or no, if he's sitting back and letting Shep do all the work, it's not sending off a good vibe. I know I wouldn't like that kind of approach at all. Trust is all well and good, but this is a two-way street: if he wants her to keep trusting him, he's gotta put his ass on the line as well, and not just in combat. Especially when he's making such a big point of doing his research. He does put his ass on the line with the wine and the music, so it's jarring to me that he wouldn't have that kind of attitude to every aspect of the relationship.

Basically, what I'm saying is not that he hasn't done any research at all, because I'm sure he has. It's the idea that he hasn't watched the vids because he forgot, or because he thought he'd just let Shepard handle all that stuff by default.

For a moment there, I imagined that the "vids" that Garrus had mentioned was not from Mordin (unless it's Xsause-Mordin), but rather from Joker. XP

Has anyone wonder what the vids that Garrus talked about in his romance? I usually assume that they are those soppy soap operas. Or maybe it's some human pr0n.

Maybe THAT's why he was watching Vaenia?

I guess I just don't think it's a big deal.  I mean the poor guy is risking a lot even being willing to try this.  And it's not like he's done nothing.  The wine, the music, the civvies.  He thought about this.  He cares.  He's taking steps.  Him choosing to leave the vid watching up to Shep or something just wasn't a big deal to me.  I thought it was funny.  He already said he didn't want things to be "clinical."  Maybe that's why he does it.  I don't think he is letting Shep do all the work.  I do think he is letting Shep lead and that doesn't bother me.  He can barely form a coherent sentence around her yet.  I'm inclined to give him a bit of a break before I expect him to start making big romantic gestures or chasing her a little in return.

And another thought. Shep isn't meeting Garrus evenly in the romance department. He brought wine and music and maybe a nice set of clothes. What did she do? She took a shower. So you could say she is falling down in some areas as well. I don't think she is. I think between the two of them they figured it out by bringing different things to the table.

Interesting discussion here, hehe.

After seeing that Vaenia-soundtrack reference, I figured maybe Garrus was just too mortified to watch the stuff he got from Mordin and stuck to his own "research" instead, but then maybe regretted that decision later. Or maybe he was just filling the awkward silence with a joke about failing at his research, when he started panicking.

Fair enough. It's true that Shep seems like a zen master next to him (she really should be at least a bit more nervous about it all, shouldn't she?...maybe that's why she takes that shower?). It's not that I think he's not making an effort. He definitely is. But then not watching the vids because he had a "*shrug*" attitude to them just seems inconsistent with the rest of his behaviour. It's only that that I have an issue with. But since there are plenty of other explanations as to why he didn't watch them, it's pretty much a moot point.

Ooo, good idea. Except he really didn't sound like he was joking. More like he was about to have a panic attack. Posted Image

I don't think he was indifferent. I don't think he gave up on wanting to impress Shep and make it work out. I think he concluded that watching vids was the wrong way to go about it and so he went with something else.

And yea, it does sound more panic attack than not.  I don't think he starts falling back on joking until he says "throw me a line here Shepard" but it could be like the catalyst of a joke or something.

That could explain a lot.  Or maybe, he got the "vids" in question from Joker to begin with and then promptly thought "never mind."  Lol.  It'd be really funny if that happened.  Though honestly, I'm not even quite sure if he knew himself what he meant by "research."  I totally expect that once the battery door closed he had some kind of "Great Garrus, you just said you would do research.  What kind?  Where you gonna get it?  You had to open your fat mouth."

Not the kind of funny joke, but the kind of "Oh crap I don't know what to say let's try to save this situation somehow" self-ironic joke.

But I guess I like to take the lines pretty much at face value, without delving too deep into hidden meanings, and I think Garrus attempting to save the panicky situation with a joke (whether or not he actually succeeds) would be consistent with his previous comments, and wouldn't mean he led Shepard on with promises of doing research. That doesn't sound very turian to promise one thing and do another, and despite what Garrus says or thinks, he is a very good turian.

Would be kewl to see Garrus' extranet history log, though, to see what other research he had been doing. But given there's none being shown, I would think it's the Mordin's lessons he is referring to
(BioWare doesn't tend to make things too complicated, in my experience).

mhm, and then he'd wander around the ship, pondering "where the heck can I find info without everyone knowing?....Joker? nah! kelly? Hell no! Chakwas? Weird! Mordin......damn.......wish I had other options...." *takes deep breath and walks straight into Mordin's lab.

Mordin: Garrus, what can I do for you?
Garrus: I need your advice.
Mordin: Of course. What do you need?
Garrus: Do you ....is there.....I wanna bang Shepard.
Mordin: *blinks* Yes, yes, yes, can see your concern. loooooooooooooong scientifc bla bla about the differences in human and turian anatomy during which Garrus really WANTED to listen but his brain decided otherwise. ...."will transfer instruction videos and diagrams to your quarters. also have guidelines regarding human courtship."
Garrus: videos????
Mordin: Erogenous zones of humans different from turians.
Garrus: i should go.

"I never thought about those zones on Shepard....."

Lol, that would be a great reaction. Posted Image

But yeah, Joker does seem to be the most plausible source of such information. Jacob is Cerberus anyway, I don't see Garrus going to him for that reason alone.

Or he could've asked Ken.

You've gotta wonder whether Thane needs the same kind of research. Because that could potentially be even more embarrassing than Garrus.

I totally have written the scene where Garrus asks Mordin for advice for that aborted fic of mine, but I write everything by hand first and I never got round to finishing typing it up and editing it. I really need to do that.
