For me (or us) it's not the voice so much as badassery and comradeship.

Character popularity in Mass Effect is determined by how sexy that character's voice is.

Seriously, there is NO overstating how sexy the Voice is. I don't want to give BK the creeps or anything, but God has gifted him with, like, THE SEXIEST VOICE EVER. And I say he uses it for good not evil. XD

And on a separate note: I can has fun writing fanfic? Whee!! :P

*Places another check, just to reiterate the badassery*

While some poor souls might be deaf to the utter drool-worthiness of Garrus' voice, his embodiment of badassery and general "awesome comeraderie-ness" more than make up for it. ;)

KG if you do write some more fanfic stuff please tell me where!!

And those comments that Garrus comes up with - total win. He has the best snarky/funny lines.

Badassery is always hawt! Combined with sweetness always makes for DAWWWWW!!!!!! Turians are just ....i don't know, it's hard to describe. Garrus and Nihlus are still the hottest looking turians, closely followed by Sidonis.

I also found the Predators from the Predator movie hawt. I only sat through all the Alien vs. Predator movies just to drool over them xD Yah, I'm weird like that.

Um, I'm not sure I'd call them hot, but they are darn cool looking and something about them does draw the eye. I'm pretty sure if I let that impulse roam it would morph into something more than "intrigued" pretty quickly.

B)

The first movie was cool. When he takes that alien claw and marks her cheek that was sooooo :wub::wub::wub::wub::wub::wub: but all the other movies were just bleh except for the Predators :D

Hence why I have a thing for Turians. :innocent:

Only girl he's making happy in MY games is Shepard, darn it. XD Some female turian tries to lay her talons on him, she's gonna learn just why he "respects her more than anyone else in the galaxy." >:)

Same for my Shepard. She would not just stand around silently like the squadmates.

I would also like it if the LIs didn't just stand there when varoius asari are rubbing up on you. I support asari repellent in ME3.

I'm surprised no one made banners for this yet. xD "I support asari repellent in ME3." "I support "hands off" Renegade Interrupts in ME3." Or something like that.

And actually I've kinda gotten the impression that Bioware is hinting that femshep is bi, like it or not.  Just as they seem to be trying to say dudeshep is straight, like it or not.  If they are doing this, it really sucks.

I avoid any conversations I need to avoid to make it seem like this is not the case. I don't care if the choice is there, but it needs to stay just that - a choice. My Shepards are straight. Everyone else's Shepards can have whatever preference they want. (Even if the option isn't in-game, just imagine it! xD I doubt my MainShep will ever get together with Saren in-game.)

Also, I agree with Collider about the voice. I think all turian voices are cool, and Garrus' is too, but the reason why I like Garrus is all in his character.

You mean the visor that he won't even take off for the romance scene? xD (The strangest thing is, he will take it off when he's wearing a light armor helmet in ME1.)

Oh, snap! He does.

And I would be lying if I said he was completely unappealing in ME1. So mark me down for "badass" as well, I guess.

I'll have to make Garrus wear those helmets the next time I start a ME1 playthrough that's not a NG+ (because he's already in medium armor by then). It looks adorable on him.

...Poor Garrus. He's not the first badass character I've called "adorable." xD

It's been brought up a couple of times that a possible reason why Garrus doesn't remove his visor during the romance scene is because it gives him feedback about the heart rate and breating rate of anyone nearby. If he was nervous about doing things right, he might have wanted to make absolutely sure that Shep was, uh...reacting favourably to his advances.

Although I think it's sweeter to imagine that he was simply so nervous that he completely forgot about it.

Backing up a few pages, I do find turians physically attractive, for much the same reasons as others have stated: they manage to look both slender and strong at the same time (thin waist + large upper body), they have that predatory vibe (strong legs; standing on their toes suggests speed; small, sharp eyes), the mandibles are a great way of expressing emotion, and the rest of them is just cool. Garrus gets major bonus points for personality and, of course, The Voice. Also known as: Aural Honey...and various other names that would probably be more fitting for the NSFW thread Posted Image

Garrus a romantic? The bumbling kind, then. Not the "poetry reading, scrapbook making, hand-holding and smooching in public" kind. I'd be out the door faster than you could blink if he were like that. But the kind that buys a shiny new rifle and hides it in Shep's locker, and then acts embarrassed about it? D'awwww...Posted Image

As for FemShep being bi, it doesn't bother me per se; but I can see the whole "FemShep is bi, but MaleShep isn't" angle. I'd say it's largely the asari's fault, but they ARE asari. They are bi (for all intents and purposes, without the whole "genderless" excuse), so it makes sense that they'd hit on FemShep and MaleShep alike. Also, if only for Samara's LM, FemShep has to be at least able to convincingly pretend that she's bi. It's a storyline requirement. But it's probably more because Shep won't budge or say "hands off" that strengthens the "bi" vibe, but the lack of this option bothers me as much for a MaleShep as for a FemShep. Had there been a male-looking equivalent of asari, you'd be hearing the same concerns about MaleShep being bi, I'm sure. Still, I can see why straight female gamers might have a bit of an issue with that.

TheodoricFriede wrote...

if I may comment on the whole femshep being bi thing, I think that its solely because its more "acceptable" for Mass Effects demographic to have a bisexual female then it is to have a bisexual male.
I'm pretty well convinced that most Shepards who played a femshep and romanced Liara did it because they were guys who like seeing lesbians.

This is probably true. There's still a majority of male gamers, and, simply put, guys find lesbians hawt, regardless of how little sense it makes (no, they're not doing it to turn you on, they really do prefer girls, and if you were to "get in on the action", they probably wouldn't like it!). Well, to be precise, they find bi girls hawt, but they usually get classified as lesbians.

Meanwhile if male Shepard and Kaiden were together, those same people would probably bring the anti-gay thunder.

Sadly, this is probably also true. I've seen some very violent backlashes against Zevran, so it wouldn't surprise me if something like this happened if it were suggests that MaleShep could also be bi.

Personally if male Shepards were bi, I may actually do a maleshep/Garrus playthrough. Honestly, I don't know what it is about Garrus...but I would totally be his....

Those ME1 turian helmets remind me of these:

Posted Image

Much fun guaranteed on missions that require headgear to be worn.

Re: the visor in romance scene.

I think it's a dev oversight originally. They thought Garrus looks badass wearing it and didn't think it'll look weird in an intimate scene. No complaints, though, it's fun to theorise why he's wearing it now... :D

Re: Bisexuality...

DAO has male bisexual characters, so I don't see why the expected audience of ME would be given different character models. I think DAO and ME pretty much have the same target group, and that is largely male players. It's a bit silly to get all prude and exclude male homosexuality from ME when it's already been done in other BioWare games.

So, I'm guessing it has to do with the asari. They're supposed to be two-gendered after all. If this is the strategy BioWare used, it didn't work perfectly, though, because the asari are considered female by most gamers. Even if in the ME universe they're both male and female.

@Jane: Wow, you got Garrus to stand really close to your Shepard in that video! My Shepard normally has to corner him against a wall after several minutes of attempts.

I try to keep Garrus in armor that matches his colors - blue with black or silver. Nihlus armor is awesome though.

@Nilfalasiel: That's a good explanation for Garrus wearing his visor (the heart rate thing and forgetting to take it off both work).

I didn't mind it with Zevran at all. He basically asks if it's okay for him to continue flirting. I like that. It needs to be done for more characters now.

@nekhbet: That's adorable. xD The helmets remind me of tight hoodies and hats too. Those pictures also look like the hats some turians wear in ME2 that are really similar to the helmets.

Actually, I'm not sure about it being the same target group for ME and DAO. ME is much more directed towards casual players and FPS-players. DAO is a lot more hardcore, stat-tinkering, high-fantasy RPG. In fact, I'm willing to bet that the backlash against Zevran occurred from people who usually play shooters and ME, and who decided to try DAO, then got icked by the "sleazy gay elf", as they so tactfully put it.

Also, I'll point out Jade Empire: the romance options were not equivalent in that. Silk Fox and Sky were bi, but Dawn Star was a straight female. There was no straight male equivalent, so male players got one extra LI option. That's telling me that they tend to pay more attention to the male players. So I can see them being concerned about what part of the male demographic would be accepting of a gay romance and what part wouldn't be, and figuring out that the part that wouldn't be would be more likely to play ME than either DAO or JE.

So, I'm guessing it has to do with the asari. They're supposed to be two-gendered after all. If this is the strategy BioWare used, it didn't work perfectly, though, because the asari are considered female by most gamers. Even if in the ME universe they're both male and female.

Mono-gendered, ne? The Codex states "asari have one gender".

In response to Nekhbet,

I think that the games are different enough that the demographics would be (at least viewed as) different. Consider: The Mass Effect is science fiction, which while still "nerd-ish" tends to attract all manner of people. I'm sure quite a few people bought ME2 expecting Gears of War. (also a fantastic game but i needed an example) That games demographic tends to be a bit less tolerant of peoples sexual preference.

Now consider dragon age. A fantasy rpg likened to the old Baulders Gate games. Its a much smaller demographic, with a different type of gamer. Bioware was taking much less of a risk with Zeveran because I'm pretty sure even they didn't expect the game to sell as well as it did. I would bet in Dragon Age 2 we don't see any bisexual male characters because the game will reach a mach larger demographic.

Its a difficult thing for me to describe so hopefully i said something semi-coherent.

Of course maybe my making these judgments I'm no better then the people I condemn.
