Heh, Garrus and Jack...their respective baggage doesn't match well, either. I'd 'ship Garrus with Miranda, in a manShep universe, because of the comedy gold there.Sialater wrote...
Yeah... Garrus & Jack... not happening. I read a fic once where Jack said the best line ever in regards to why: to paraphrase, "I don't have a problem with doing a turian. I won't do COPS! I have standards!"

It's just I'm irritated by the idea of Shepard and Garrus referring to themselves as "best friends." I've noticed this a lot in fanfiction and whenever I run into that term I make a snap judgement, stop reading and dismiss the author as an immature teenage girl. I have no problem with people referring to their Shep and Garrus as being best friends when on a forum or chatting but to actually write fanfiction with Shepard and Garrus referring to themeselves as such? No, it doesn't work.
It's just that the term best friends is a very "immature" type of term. It's like saying "I love you very much" instead of just saying "I love you." The added adjective makes it seem like you're trying to hard, after all when it comes to that sort of decleration, less is better.
I don't mean to say that the term best friend should never be used at all, it works fine in real life and plenty of stories. It's just that when Shep and Garrus are depicted as saying that it sounds wrong. They may trust each other more than anyone else in the galaxy (depending on your Sheps actions of course.) But that term just doesn't work, for one thing, I highly doubt that turians have a concept for it. After all the term "best friends" is mostly used by young girls and several women. Also there's the misconception when it comes to Shepard's character.
It is impossible to have a Shepard that is your own, Shepard has one basic personality and will always put the mission before his/her emotions. The only thing you really control is the way he/she goes about the mission. It's the reason why you don't know exactly what he/she is going to say when you choose dialogue. You do have some control over personality but not to the extent of say dragon age where the character is whatever you want it to be. The point is that while you can choose a certain level of maturity (renegade actions can be pretty immature) what we know of his/her personality makes the term best friend seem like something that he/she would never use.
The term "closest friend" would work better because the word "best" is rather... juvenile.
I know that this isn't a huge topic but I'm curious about what people think. What words could be used to define their relationship? Does the word "friends" even work? Am I just an oversensitive b*tch?
edit: If I offended anyone, I'm really sorry. I hope I didn't come accross as rude...

Oh, that's perfect. Haha!
I mentioned in another thread recently that there's no one else I can see a non-romanced Garrus hooking up with. Mostly because of the interspecies thing. I totally agree that Shepard is unique in that regard. But even if that weren't an issue, I just don't see much compatibility with anyone we've met so far.

...Actually, I wonder if unromanced Garrus runs into Ms. Flexibility in ME3 and they start something...er, again. X3

I don't see it as a juvenile distinction. My husband is my best friend. I have no others. I have several close friends, but my husband is my "best." It means someone from whom you have no secrets and who comes first before anything.
Now, unfortunately for Shep and Garrus, there is one thing that will always come first, defeating the Reapers. But Garrus, I think, along with other characters like Liara and Tali, share Shepard's obsession with stopping them, so that works.
I may have them use it ONCE, but just like the word, "Love," it won't be a phrase they toss around.

Lol, I think Jack's more the type he'd take out with a bullet than he would to dinner...especially considering Shepard's his one exception for cross-species relationships.

Both of these are brilliant. xD I don't see Garrus and Jack getting together either. If they had met before Shepard, they'd probably try to kill each other.
Also, on the topic of unromanced squadmates getting together with someone else - I don't think it should happen, not for Garrus and not for anyone else. I have Shepards planned out for each romance. It would be weird if they cheated on a Shepard from another playthrough. In games like this, I think it should stay "Shepard's story," with Shepard being the only one who has romance options.

I can kinda see where you're coming from. IRL, I have several close friends rather than one best friend. And while I wouldn't label the term immature, it is one I haven't used since high school.
But, OTOH, it's never bothered me when used in fanfic in reference to Shepard and Garrus.
Although if she ever busted out an "idk my bff Garrus", well then I'm with you.

That's exactly why I said it works in real life and in other stories, it just doesn't fit in the mass effect setting. When you say that your husband is your best friend, it doesn't sound juvenile at all. When you think about it Shepard is Garrus's superior, and it just sounds wrong. Closest friend or most trusted companion sounds better.
Maybe I find it odd because the last time I had a best friend I was in elementary school. I'm still friends with that person but I no longer refer to her as my best friend.

For the opposite, I could see EvilShep saying "I have no friends" when he's being evil, and others saying "let's not pretend we're friends" to a squadmate they don't like. Garrus doesn't have to worry about hearing that though. Even if I'm playing a Shepard who's more serious and not the type to make friends with their crew, they always consider Garrus a good comrade. It's the loyalty that makes him so easy to like, definitely.

You can't and SHOULDN'T sleep with someone you feel is your inferior, no matter the ranks. Shepard may be Garrus' commanding officer, but she's not his "superior."
A very good distinction, I think, and I definitely agree.

Yay! I was just looking at ff.net last night, for the first time in ages, and was wondering about that one.
Miranda was giving me fits. And then I had to put in Garrus banter to make me feel better.

Shepard's a squad leader, and Garrus is on her squad, yes. It's not the same situation Shepard had with Alenko and Ashley, though.

Gee, I wonder which one I voted for...
Carth, I have no experience with. I just know of him second-hand as well as why he is the originator of "Carth Syndrome." Kaidan was...okay. Not interested in romancing him, though...I mean...he's nice I guess but...Garrus is nice, too...and dead-sexy and has The Voice and a very big rifle. Amongst other things. Alistair is alright, too...he's got the humor down but I'm not big on the whiny-streak...still one of my favorite Romances in DA:O, though. Zevran is...fun...but not as a romance for me. ;p
