It actually did puzzle me before Mass Effect 2 on why Garrus was so popular. Because I really didn't find him that interesting compared to the rest of the squad.
I can't really recall at what point Garrus became a favourite. I had liked pretty much all the characters in ME1, but his recruitment and Loyalty Missions were both pretty awesome so he was the first LI I was keen to romance after Jacob.

@mrsph: Garrus was always my favorite squadmate, and Wrex was second in ME1. I brought those two everywhere. I liked Tali and Kaidan enough that I had a positive opinion of them, but still didn't care that much for them. (Tali has always been my favorite female squadmate though. In general, I just like the male squadmates better.) I never liked Ashley and Liara.

Garrus has always been my favorite squadmate. What I find interesting is that he has a lot in common with Thel 'Vadam.

The exact moment Garrus went from a character I just liked to a character I loved was in ME1 on the mission where you have to find the data modual from the pyjaks. And as the mission starts both he and I say at the exact same time "...Oh, this' ll be fun" in the same sarcastic tone.

As for which squadmates have the most and least lines, I don't really notice those things. I realized that Garrus', Tali's, and Wrex's conversations will end early if I go through them too fast, but the characters who have the "least" amount of dialogue in my playthroughs are the ones I don't want to talk to. I thought it felt like Legion was around for the least amount of time though. In my next playthrough, where the crew gets killed off, he'll be around longer - but in my first playthrough, there was only one mission between recruiting him and the suicide mission, and that was his loyalty mission. Garrus was in the first group to recruit, so Shepard can bring him on almost every mission in the game.

Three years ago. He and Kaidan never left my squad after he joined it.

I found out about the ME Wiki and started reading spoilers during my first playthrough, but I didn't read all of them. I knew about Wrex and how to prevent it. I also knew about Saren's suicide, which was a really good thing since it was shocking even with spoilers. Sovereign's epic speech on Virmire being completely unspoiled though was one of my favorite moments in the game.

My other femShep Spacer War Hero, is a little bit luckier, and she has Garrus and Wrex!

Anyone else notice just how many times Garrus uses the phrase "Just like old times"? I can think of at least 4 occasions. He must have really missed working with Shepard.
He also likes to say "impressive", not only as a combat line but in conversations and commentaries. He said it 3 different times last night while I was playing, in 3 different situations.

Garrus is the guy who made his bed up neat and tidy even while he was trapped in that base on Omega. I dunno how he'd be about the strewing of drawers. Maybe after a few drinks...
Hmm...good point. Perhaps in a moment of passion, Shep carelessly tossed them aside and they were forgotten on a lamp shade or something.
You know, that can cause a fire.

Also, random thought for the day:
I think the reason Garrus' "calibrations" has become the embodiment of the regretable lack of dialogue amongst all squadmates, is because people (1)had a tendency to recruit him early and thus there is a huge gap until after his loyalty mission pops up...which is, what, the fifth or sixth in? And, (2)people just wanted to talk to Garrus, dammit, because he's GARRUS. Wit, humor, general badassery...and he'sGarrus!a turian most people generally at least like, if not love/adore. Dunno, just a thought that came to me today.
You know, I didn't even know Garrus was a romance option when I played the game (and I'm so glad!!!!)...I was just in the Main Battery to talk to my old friend and hear his mellifluous voice. I was all, hmmm, what's this? a dialog option I missed? "What do turian crews do to get ready for missions?" Ok, I'll bite, should be worth a Codex entry and I get to hear Dat Voice some more.
Imagine my reaction. Go ahead, imagine it.

It seems like both of our first Shepards have bad luck... but at least mine only got trap-romanced. (Still haven't finished the poor guy's playthrough before I start over again.) Losing Wrex, his closest friend in Mass Effect, would have made his Virmire decision more based on vengeance than a military strategy.Buggirl70 wrote...
Not until I played through with my second Shep Kim, and that was three years later! So I have a virgin Shep with no LI from ME1 and no WrexShe is a soldier, earthborn paragon who is now romancing a dying man. Hell she has had a rough time, I fear for her in ME3!
My other femShep Spacer War Hero, is a little bit luckier, and she has Garrus and Wrex!
I guess I should enjoy the Garrus conversations while they're still around. MaleShep won't get to talk with him much in ME2, and he won't get brought along on every single mission like he does with my FemShep.

It's hard to wipe the smile off my face thinking about that line right now!
@Kim, I do love that we can have different kinds of Sheps doing different things. After playing LotSB I am thinking of even going back creating a new Shep to romance Liara (can't decide to go Male or Female on that one) and playing that one completely differently from my two current femSheps (I have a mShep but I didn't playthrough ME1 with him)
Whatever I do I get to see Garrus again. God I love that turian.

And then, when I found how easy it was to burn him and turn down the romance, I was very, very careful about what I selected. I do NOT speed-skip through Garrus' dialogue.

True story: The first time that whole dialog happened, I had to replay the whole thing, because I hardly heard a single word. Why? Because I was on my sofa, with one of the couch cushions on top of my head, squealing like a pig stuck in a mailbox. I couldn't hear what they said over the goofy fangrrl squealing.
TRUE STORY.
Haha, I am just the sort of pathetic nerd which prompted BW to make Garrus an LI. I'm so proud.

Now that I've dug myself so deep into ME2 I'm worried I'm going to give in to spoilers for ME3. I love being surprised by games/movies. But how can I resist with so many awesome characters around?
I have the same problem Bug. I am really addicted to this forum. It'll be painful to restrict access to it so as to avoid ME3 spoilers. On the one hand, I tell myself I can handle it. On the other, I regard my surprise at Garrus being an LI as literally one of my great gaming moments of all time, and if I had come here, it wouldn't have happened. What to do?

Clearly, the reaction must involve happiness and clicking the "start romance" button as fast as you can. xDkglaser wrote...

Agreed. It does get old to play the same Shepard so many times, but at least there will be a few new things in MaleShep's playthrough. (I'm going to buy the Platinum Hits version of ME1 to get the DLC. Yay for finally getting to see Bring Down The Sky!) I like watching Saren's scenes over and over again, but the downside is watching him die... even though that's the scene that really made me start to like him in the first place. Watching MaleShep tell Garrus "yeah, let's kill him" and tell Liara "who cares about his reason" is no fun.Buggirl wrote...
