But it is hard to get interested in the other romance options when you got Garrus and Tali on board.

This, very much so. It was hard enough to have to avoid Garrus with my KaidanShep and my ThaneShep, but I can't imagine how to avoid Tali with a MaleShep. At least, Garrus doesn't show any interest if you don't poke him, but Tali's got Kelly and Kasumi telling Shep how she loves him. I'm not sure how to resist that.

My AshShep are still faithfull to Ashley( Yes I am one of those who actualy likes Ashley) so that helps him to resist the quarian charm. Though it was hard even for a tough guy like him not  leave himself open to a quarian pounce of love.

Something similar could be said about my KaidanShep. Oh Garrus...

Yep my first shep I imported with Kaidan left him for Garrus.

I like that no matter what happens Garrus will always have my back.

Hmm I could see a vid conversation between Garrus and his sister in ME3. Shep could walk in on him finishing up talking to her or something.

Ala Ashley in ME1?  Solana could catch him in the background of Al-Jilani's interview/interrogation of Shepard....

Or perhaps Solana saw a news vid with rumours of him and Shep and calls to confront him about it and Shep happens to be there?

As for attraction, I'm of the opinion that Shep pulling Garrus' ass out of the fire in ME2 shifted his interest for her. Of course, at that point, he's got much bigger fish to fry and doesn't give it any more thought until Sidonis is dealt with, but if you're romancing him, I think it's a plausible trigger. It's also why he seems so ready to accept the idea of blowing off steam after the initial (5 second) surprise. If sex is the first thing he agrees to, then there must be attractiveness on some level (because, no matter how much you respect someone, if they gross you out physically, chances are sex is either not going to work or be very awkward). He wouldn't have considered it with another human, because, yes, it would be less natural and obvious than being attracted to a turian, but with Shep, it's more than just physical, and that's why he's much more ready to accept the physical, as odd as it may initially feel to him. And yes, as someone else pointed out, if there was no physical attraction, Garrus could very well have declined. Screwing up his friendship with Shep probably scares him more than anything else, and she did give him a perfectly acceptable out: if he was squicked out by the thought of physical intimacy and was only playing along because he thought it would make Shep happy, that would've been a perfect point to back out.

In short, the non-physical part of the relationship is vital to the Garrus/Shep pairing. And it's also what makes it meaningful, despite the lack of dialogue and the shortness of the scenes. I guess that comes naturally when you perceive Garrus and Shep as best friends and always keep that in mind as subtext, but I agree that, if you cut out that premise, the romance may seem shallow. Out of curiosity, could that be the difference? To those that have concerns about the romance being shallow (oenis and mrsph, but also any others), did you consider Garrus as Shep's best friend prior to the romance?

That's the point I was trying to make earlier ... Garrus clearly considers femshep his best friend but femshep has a similar relationship with alot of squaddies. Even Wrex, notorious badass, gives her a hug after reuniting. Tali would share suits, she's Thane's only friend in 10 years, Miranda leaves Cerberus for her etc. They all ask femshep to become intimately involved in their personal stuff.

I guess too, I was surprised by how distant Garrus seemed in the beginning because he has the same or less dialogue as random Cerberus people femshep doesn't even know. This is why I think something should have been added to establish how close the relationship is before it becoming romantic.

Tali's progression was epic; shepard goes to her home and learns all the stuff about bubble baby Tali etc, is there for her when she finds her father and yells at a jury of high ranking quarians about how awesome Tali is. It felt like their relationship got deeper after ME1 and it's difficult to say the same for Garrus.

It's not the quantity of dialogue, but the quality, that matters. There's not one line of wasted Garrus dialogue and the entire scene, dialogue included, tells the story between Shep and Garrus. I'm not about to argue against having more of Garrus, because I certainly think BW needs to do more with him...but Garrus is hardly distant and there IS progression (at least if you romance him)...even if it's just progression different than what you expected or wanted.

^ I'm not trying to say there was no progression or that the quality of the dialogue was lacking; I apologize if that's what it sounds like. For femshep's best friend, he does seem a little distant though, to me anyways. There's quite a large gap between his recruitment and when he asks for help with Sidonis. You can't talk to him about what happened when the Normandy went down or being dead for two years. Maybe that's OOC, I'm not sure, but for a best friend he really did not get the sort of importance I'd expect.

Wanted to add: It's probably not fair to the ME2 characters, but I really think Garrus should have gotten extra importance. He's shepard's bro from ME1, it only makes sense that she'd want to talk to him more than strangers.

The first thing he does is hand you his sniper rifle. I'd say that's a HUGE step to show you how he feels.

And I call the fact that you can't talk to him about ANYTHING other than the night before Ilos (which my Shep spent blowing off steam with an entirely different man), is a writing failure, not a Garrus failure. I always RP heavily anyway.

I said before, it is not a Garrus failure. I adore the character and I def did not get enough of him in ME2. His recruitment mission was excellent as well. Some extra Normandy dialogue would I think have helped his relationship with Shepard, if you were romancing him or not.

Gotta agree with that. I played a maleShep and was disappointed he spent most of the game blowing me off for his damn calibrations. Until I brought Liara up to the ship at the end of LotSB, there was NO ONE to whom I could vent. Being able to vent, even just a little at the end of that DLC was hugely cathartic; Shep should have been able to bend Garrus's ear a bit prior to that. We've both been down dark roads and came out with scars.

Playing me1 again for a kaiden femshep, I just have a very strong hunch that there’s going to be a virmire survivor dlc so I'm preparing a femshep just for it. I made Angell Shepard a spacer/sole survivor , she joined the alliance because "that's what you do" in her family and has she a strong sense of duty since both her parents served.   Her unit felt like a second family and she was close to them all but after akuze she wasn't the same. She regrets she lived sometimes because she honestly thought she was just a lucky survivor but she manages to carry on despite this and developed a stronger sense of duty than ever before.

Angell is stern, strict and very formal, she doesn’t let any criminal walk , if they break the law they get arrested (jahleed learnt that the hard way) if they are murdering crime lords like fist , they get shot.  She gets to know the new normandy crew but still keeps them at an arms  distance , although this gets harder to do. She has a great fondness for Ashley and sees the past version of herself when they talk (being a spacer, Ashley losing her squad) which makes the future “choice” that more heartbreaking for her to make .She doesn’t ever think she will go above the law herself as she can’t stand criminals and law breakers , but kaiden seemed to predict that eventually she’ll have to “cut corners”(stealing the Normandy etc)but he says will be there for her when it does. This concern for her well being confuses her as she has tried to be as formal as possible with him, she realizes she likes kaiden too but is hesitant to start a relationship with another soldier, it’s against regs and he could die.

Suffice to say I’m enjoying this third run, can’t wait to import her later; she’s going to HATE working for Cerberus after what she just found out Posted Image.  Still love garrus best but this is a nice change of pace. Also more things I didn’t know you could do in ME1, Jeez!

1.       You can talk to Udina in the embassies about your main missions after you do them; he has an opinion on what choices you made. I honestly had no idea you could do this! I found it a bit unfair as I only found out after three main missions so I don’t get to hear him yell at me for killing the rachni ^_^.  They should have reminded you to “report back” or something because I’m sure a lot of people never set foot there again after the consort’s mission was done.

2.       First time I set those Rachni on fire, I didn’t know I could do that either! The two that are in that see through sealed room? You can incinerate them with fire, I used to just open the door and shoot them.

3.       Talking to Maeko Matsuo the guard in Noveria. You can have several chats with her. She asks you if you killed her men in Lorik’s office and you can lie or tell her the truth, if you tell the truth she says she has no ill feelings towards you. Talk to her when you smuggle Opold’s package and she’ll ask you if you’re doing anything illegal. After Alonais’s arrest you can talk to her about that too.

4.       Bringing Liara and Wrex to Noveria. Funny as HELL. Liara asks you to spare the queen and Wrex says “AWWWW does the asari want more species to breed with” or something like that. I don’t like the asari much so it was funny for Wrex to knock her species off their Mary- sue pedestal LOL.

oh and garrus!

About Garrus and his family, I'm sure there are ways to bring it up in ME3 that work with the story and aren't out-of-character. As others have mentioned, it could be something included within another mission, or similar to ME2's loyalty missions to make sure the team is focused by doing those last few things they want taken care of before they risk their lives fighting the Reapers. I'd like to see Garrus' family find out that he's not just off "playing vigilante" somewhere - he's trying to save the galaxy. They gave us a lot of information about Garrus' family to not do something about it later.

Lol, oh well, I can deal with the heart icon. I still think colour coding would've been more discreet.

I can't find proof of what the icon will look like, just that there will be one, so it might be something the fans just assumed. There's a great thread with all of the information gathered in one place though. I'll link it to the DA thread in Clan V. From what I've read, the squadmate interactions sound awesome (much more than anything I've ever seen in a game), and it would be interesting if some of that finds its way to ME3.

Nice! I'd imagine they'd want to include LotSB too. After all, it's part of Liara's story arc. Depends on when the PS3 version is coming out though, I guess.

It comes out in January, so there's hope. :) I'll keep watching for news of an Xbox version with the DLC, but if there's not, the one for PS3 is the next best thing.

Garrus's family could find out about his actions through one of those reporters running around on the Citadel.  All it would take would be an interview with Shepard asking a few questions including some about Garrus (in case you didn't have him there) and pow - instant triggering of a family conference call or something.  I could see his sister freaking out after seeing him all scarred up and hearing about what he's been doing trying to clear up Omega or trying to fight the reapers.  Something along the lines of "Why didn't you tell me!!!"

On my Thane playthrough, I started his romance, but went and had the "Reach and Flexibility" conversation just for snicks right beforehand with Garrus, for old time's sake, then reloaded my Thane game and proceeded with that.  I felt actually hollow inside.  There is nothing wrong with Thane, but to say that all the heart went out of the game for me is an understatement. :(
I still haven't been able to do it.  Thane is charming, handsome, and smooth, but he's not Garrus. :pinched:
