Completely agreed. I understand why they didn't write post-romance dialogue due to a bunch of conflicting factors (such as the difference between those who romanced him for the romance and those who did it just to blow off steam, which would be better addressed in ME3), but I would have definitely preferred that loop to wondering if the night was such a horrible cross-species awkwardness thing that Garrus chose to wipe it from his memory <_<

Agreed.  I understand if there were resource/story snags,  but the loop back to pre-romance dialogue was really jarring.

I would have preferred that the post-mission dialogue gave the opportunity to establish which path the player intended. But then that would be a whole 'nother set of variables that would have to be accounted for in ME3.

I would have even accepted jokey dialogue , just SOMETHING you know? When you watch Tali and Jacob's extra romance dialogue...it just makes you sad. It would have also stopped the rest of the crew sounding like they lost their memories;

"part of me still thinks we're crazy for even considering...blowing off steam"

If the last bit of dialogue from each LI character has to continuously loop, wouldn't it have made even more sense for all of them to have post mission romance dialogue and then have THAT loop instead? It was just REALLY lazy IMO and it felt like a glaring continuity error every time I spoke to garrus after the suicide mission, sure he comes up to your cabin but even THAT was a copy and paste feature! His head was clipping halfway into the pillow! I was so annoyed at Garrus’s case of Alzheimer’s  that I wished they had the decency to make his post mission dialogue the thing that looped rather than his pre-romance scene dialogue.

Yeah, it makes the romance feel less important and I really wanted to know what he thought about it. It makes me more nervous about how Bioware is going to treat the relationship in ME3. And if he does return in ME3 and you can continue the relationship then they better not turn it into "blowing off steam" and nothing else. I would have felt better if I just knew what he thought about it...Posted Image

I mean sometimes it seems more long term and other times it seems more one night standish.

Also if I remember it correctly there is some other clipping issues. His hand goes through Shepard's arm while on the bed and there is some clipping that happens while she is on his lap.

Me too. Did Tali and Jacob's post-romance dialogue make their romances sound more serious? I'm trying not to look it up because I want to save it for when I romance them but I just want to know if it makes theirs sound more important. I wish Garrus' romance was treated fairly.

I think the main reason the Tali romance is seen as more definite is because of one very specific reason: the people involved. Shepard is not the kind of person to gush out his or her feelings; s/he may start the relationship, and throw out a "I do want this" every now and then, but that's just it. Shepard knows what s/he wants. And because s/he does, there's no need for words; Shepard will patiently wait for the LIs to come to terms with their own feelings.

That means it's up to the LI to direct the path of the romance as we the players see it. And there's the catch: Tali knows what she wants, too. Garrus doesn't. Not right away.

Character progression at its finest. Tali's feelings got there first. It doesn't mean they're more important.

Yeah, I hope he is more sure of it in ME3. He seems to be getting there with him saying at the end of his romance scene "I want something to go right just once.. just.." And he trys really hard too plus how Shepard reacted after him saying that.

And another thing is Tali might have an edge over Garrus for being ready first because from what I hear is she liked Shepard since ME1 but Garrus is just now considering it. So by ME3 he should be much more sure of the romance... I hope.

Oh, another part of his romance that confused me was the conversation after "reach and flexibility". He trys to convince Shepard to go for a human instead of him. Does he say that because he really doesn't want her or does he say that because he thinks he isn't good enough or is it just that he's just nervous, or what?

I'm betting on mere nervousness about the species barrier in general. Tali says a variation of the same thing: "You deserve to...be happy with someone. I can't do that. No matter how much I...I could get sick. Jeapordize the mission." And there are no doubts about her feelings for Shepard.

Besides, it's natural to assume that someone would be attracted to someone of their own species before going to others, right? I think it's just a step to avoid heartbreak. "You really want this, right? You're not going to make me love you and then change your mind?"

My interpretation was that Garrus was trying to find out if a "one night stand" was all you were interested in. If shepard just wanted to get rid of some stress why bother with an alien when a human would be so much easier? Garrus, I think, was gauging the situation because he might of realized that a one off with shepard was not the only thing he wanted from her. Garrus leaped at the suggestion at first but after actually THINKING about it, he started to have his doubts. Was this a right thing to do? Why does Shepard want to do this with him and not someone else? Is this what she really wants? Garrus being Garrus wouldn't ever be so open about how he really feels about the whole thing (at least not untill those final moments in the romance scene) so he takes a more subtle approach instead.

Yeah, those ideas seem right and make me more hopeful. Thanks you two. Hopefully they don't change it into something casual in ME3. He should start on the Normandy. Well everyone should that survived ME2 since they all seemed ready. I hope nothing happens were we're gone for a year and we lose all our squad just to make it easier for new people(I'm not mad at them, I just don't understand why people would start with a third part of a trilogy. ME2 maybe but not ME3).

Also this is a little random but I noticed something about Garrus when I was playing ME1 a few minutes ago. I was in a Citadel elevator with Garrus and Liara and they were having a conversation. I was moving the camera around and I noticed something about Garrus' visor(I noticed this before but forgot). It seemed that the very back of it was kinda attached to his head. There isn't anything else to rest it on and it looks like the back is kinda screwed into his head. What do you guys think?

i think if i remember correctly theres supposed to be like a metal arm or something going down his back that attatches to his armour. though for ME1 i think thats just the programers being a little bit slack with regards to outfits etc.

That's for when he needs to interface with the Cortex, a geth created fantasy world where they store the Quarian's ancestors and draw energy from their lack of intelligence.

If we're making Matrix references, it's "white rabbit," not "white elephant."  A white elephant is a gift that you personally find kind of useless and pass on to someone else--hence, white elephant parties.

That was my feeling as well.  Think about it from Garrus's perspective.  Shep is the closest friend he has in the galaxy, the one person he trusts and respects most.  He's known her for years, done one suicide mission and now in the middle of another.  She turns up out of nowhere to save his ass from certain death, and now they're working side by side again.  To top it off, she helps him close the book on Sidonis, whether Paragon or Renegade.  I'm sure Garrus doesn't want to do anything that might jeopardize that friendship.  Which is probably why he cools off a little once he has the time to think about the implications of a relationship with her.

That was the point. I was trying to explain Garrus' visor and how it seems to be attached to the back of his head. I said it was for linking to the Geth's Cortex, a fantasy world where they store the Quarian's ancestors. The geth get energy from the ancestor's lack of intelligence.  You have to follow the white elephant in order to learn about the Cortex.

It was a parody, and now its subtlety is laid bare, scavanged for the meat and left to dry out in the baking sun of Palaven.

Way to go hero. You killed it.

Honestly, if they left the conversations after suicide mission out, I would hope to assume that means they will be getting more definition in the third one... which would also pretty much mean that the third one happens within days or weeks of ME2. Tali and Jacob are sealed deals... they make it clear during the romance that they are in for the long haul, and that's just how they are. They both are seeing a future in it all. The other romances, Miranda, Garrus, Thane, Jack, they're all not so sure where it could go. Miranda is barren and works for Cerberus, Thane is dying, Jack never likes to plan, and Garrus is still unsure of how anything beyond the sex will work out at this point, including social and work place issues (his father, general animosity between turians and humans, etc).

I agree with the above, also... Garrus clearly was going for more than just a one night stand, in my opinion of his words and actions.

I hope so.

It's not the only reason but probably part of the reason I originally thought it was more like a one night stand is how Shep talks sometimes. Like for example I hated talking to Jacob because Shep always flirted with him just by me wanting to talk to him. I almost ended up in a relationship with him because I was just too nice, but luckily I ended it on the first chance I got after his loyalty mission.

But for Garrus I hated some of the things Shep said to him. Well first she tried to be more subtle with "looks like you have some tension, maybe I could help you get rid of it" well since that didn't work and Garrus thought she meant sparring then Shep said "how about we skip right right to the tiebreaker, we could test your reach with my flexibility" then she has a little half smile. I hate how forward she is. Well I guess she kinda had to with Garrus since he didn't get it the first time but... it still annoys me. Then later on she says "when should I book the room?"  which made me feel like my Shep just wanted sex which is part of the reason I thought it was more casual well until I read otherwise. I just hate how forward she is and I don't know how she responds to hitting on Thane because I made sure to stay away from the options that looked like she was starting a relationship. I hate it.. especially talking to Jacob was really.. ugh.

I think part of me hates it because she was being quite the opposite of me and when I play the game I try to pick the things I would do (at least for most of the playthroughs I'm going to do) and I don't act like that. I felt much better at the final romance scene. So now I feel much better about the romance now that people think Garrus wanted more than just sex I just hope the romance gets treated really well in ME3. But thats what these support threads are for. :)

That bothered me a lot too until I looked at it from Shepard's perspective. Garrus makes it pretty obvious early on that he's mainly focusing on the sex aspect, which I like to think is because he's still trying to even grasp the concept of a true relationship. She has to pick up on that and not force an issue Garrus is clearly not ready to discuss. The first "looks like you're carrying some tension" joke I can forgive, since it seems to be mostly a transitional line.

Besides, think about the brief times when Garrus does seriously test the waters of a relationship. Shepard responds very easily.

"I want a few moments just for us before the throw ourselves into Hell for the good of the galaxy."
"I want that too, Garrus."

"Look, Shepard. I know you can find something closer to home."
"I don't want something closer to home. I want you. I want someone I can trust."

That doesn't sound like sex-driven talk to me. Shepard speaks seriously only when Garrus invites her to; until then, she'll stay in his comfort zone.

It's been a verrryy long time since i last watched the Matrix, when i went to look up White Elephant the whole willpower thing cropped up :P

With Fem/Shep at least we know that at the conclusion of the romance (after collectors and then do the Shadowbroker DLC) that she DOES like or at the very least have very deep feelings for Garrus.

Again i say when Liara asks Shep if she's doing this for Garrus' sake, Shep responds that she'd like to give him a chance at happiness and that she'd never thought she'd find peace in the arms of a turian. i'm pretty sure that their relationship at this time is just testing the boundaries, so if Garrus does say the three magic words in ME3 it'll mean so much more.
