err heh heh I pretty much avoided Jacob with a ten foot pole when i started playing ME2. but really when Shep asked him about parts of his life before Cerberus he said he joined the corsairs (who were supposed to be like the Spectres) but turned out having more red tape, then he joined Cerberus because they actually did something.

I sat there thinking....'waiiit a minute....that sounds like Garrus!'

@fallele: There are some similarities between Garrus and Jacob, and the most important one I've noticed was quitting their jobs on the Citadel because they don't like the way things are being done (and they're right not to like it). I don't think they have that much in common. Sort of like Garrus and Saren - they have their similarities and differences, but neither one is completely like the other, or even close to it.

@Alexine: Yeah, I heard about Red Dead Redemption. Still haven't played Darkspawn Chronicles, but I have it from the Ultimate Edition now. :) Kind of funny how zombies are being included in everything though. Even the husks in Mass Effect are like space zombies, but I like them. It would be cool to watch Garrus fight them in a survival situation like that, where he'd run out of bullets and start hitting them with the rifle, putting that hand-to-hand combat he brags about to good use. Actually, I'd just like to see Garrus use those skills in a cutscene.

Garrus does kind of use those skills in a cutscene--he whacks Harkin with his gun during his loyalty mission.  Mmm...angry Garrus.

It wasn't much though. I would've liked to have seen Garrus twists necks off or some hand-to-hand combat a bit. A bit of self-defense moves would be cool!

Did Jacob even serve on the Citadel? He was in the Alliance military, but I can't recall him ever saying he was assigned there.

Jacob did some pre-Cerberus work on the Citadel with Miranda after he resigned from the Alliance. It was explained in the iPhone game Mass Effect: Galaxy. I think he had to stop a batarian terrorists who were planning to kill off the Council. ME2 didn't go into detail about it, since the games assumes that people would've played the game.

And linking this to Garrus: we kind of know that Garrus doesn't trust Miranda (evident from the pre-collector base that he disagrees with Miranda if you killed off Jack), but would Garrus feel the same for Jacob?

thinking about it, he wouldn't trust him simply because he's Cerberus. but probably given enough time and actual talking between the two i think a bond would form between them

it's such a shame that there's no conversation between Garrus and other squaddies (except the occasional lines with Tali). It would've given insight on what Garrus thinks. But honestly, Garrus hides things easily. I mean, Garrus hid that his mother had health problems from everyone (except for the Shadow Broker).

Let's see...

Kaidan: Garrus thinks Kaidan's biotic power is impressive. Also thinks that Kaidan's view of Cerberus was clouding his judgment on Horizon.

Ashley: In contrast to Kaidan, Garrus always calls Ashley by her rank or her last name. He may be wary of her.

Wrex: Garrus was fairly civil to Wrex, but Wrex just doesn't like Garrus. Partly because Garrus is Turian, partly because Wrex sees Garrus as a "kid" who doesn't know the real world.

Tali: In ME1, his travels with Tali help him get rid of his preconceptions about quarians. In ME2, it's implied that they're friends. Also, the banter on the Citadel is indicative of a brother-sister relationship.

Liara: Judging from the banter in ME1, purely professional relationship.

Jacob: Garrus doesn't exhibit an opinion about Jacob IIRC, but Jacob does about Garrus. If Shepard presses on to learn about Jacob's problems with his father, Jacob breaks up with her and tells her to try Garrus if she likes talking about the other person's problems. Also, if Shepard cheats on Jacob with Garrus, he calls Garrus a racial slur.

Miranda: Garrus doesn't seem to trust Miranda and doesn't believe she should be leading any teams in the suicide mission. His head nod while Jack is talking also seems to be that he agrees with what Jack says about Miranda.

Mordin: Garrus asked Mordin for secret STG stuff. This may indicate that Garrus trusts Mordin and/or vice versa. May be friends.

Jack: When Jack mentions how "soft" the targets she thinks the people on Illium are, Garrus disagrees and says that they're simply distracted. Disapproves of her idea of preying on the weak.

Grunt: Grunt respects Garrus as an individual and member of Shepard's "clan." Garrus doesn't show an opinion on him IIRC.

Zaeed, Samara, Kasumi, Morinth: Garrus doesn't show an opinion on them IIRC.

Thane: Garrus is impressed by Thane's skills.

So who's Garrus' top 5?

1. Shepard

2. Tali

3. Mordin

4. Kaidan

5. Thane

I think 3-5 could be switched around somewhat, but 1-2 seem fairly solid.

Sounds pretty logic. Maybe he migh have some reservations about Thane... he's skilled, but still an assassin.

For those of you enjoying the idea of three Shepards in command of The Normandy SR1, we updated Persephone Rising.  Chapter 13 is up.  Meghan and Garrus get off on the wrong foot.

Meghan, Alexis, and Ella thank you for reading.

That sounds familiar, so I've probably heard that line before. Maybe it is the one I was thinking of. I only saw it once on youtube, quite some time ago. More Garrus dialogue is good. My Shepard started the romance as soon as possible, putting off a bunch of other missions to get Garrus' loyalty early on. That made the conversations end really quickly though.

Isn't it nice how Garrus thinks that kind of thing, getting the ship's weapons ready and planning attack, is relaxing? xD I guess I have a few Shepards who would agree with him though. They could feel more relaxed being prepared for anything and having a routine (or just being around all the weapons).

I guess I'm more of a "save the best for last" kind of person in these games. In ME1 and ME2 he would be the last person I talked to when making my rounds across the ship and for both my playthroughs so far I saved his loyalty mission for later on. Before I went to recruit Samara, Thane, and Tali I did Miranda, Jacob, Jack, Mordin, and Grunts loyalty mission first (In any order) then I would do Garrus'. It keeps making me want to rush through the others though while I want to stretch Garrus' out. But he is the first person I recruit though.

Also, If Garrus is a squadmate in ME3 do you think he should stay on the ship or do you think we should recruit him again(even if the recruitment is only five minutes where we land and have a conversation then he joins)? I want him to stay on the ship because it would make me sad seeing that he left Shepard after she romanced him but I don't know what he would have to talk about if he never went anywhere. I also fear having to recruit him too late in the game like Tali/Thane/Samara. I just hope he gets as much dialogue as anyone else in ME3 because in both Mass Effects he was the squadmate with the least amount of dialogue.

Having to recruit a whole team of characters was the ME2 focus... I guess (and hope) that they'll keep at least the core of the ME2 squad since the beginning so Garrus, Miranda, Tali and 3-4 others should simply stay where they are. There will be nu entries for sure, but it's time to move on against the Reapers. Shepard's team is not like a super-heroes squad, that changes formation each 5 minutes (not saiyng this in dispregiative way... I lllove superheroes).

About the dialogues ME2 payed the prize of having so much characters, and everyone has a lot of less specific dialogues than in ME1, even Mordin and Tali who are the two with the most detailed characterization. My hope is that the team will be again around 6-8 playable chars, but all with a lot of dialogues and personal endipment. Anyway, sure Garrus he was the one with less dialogues, besides he has some really good ones.

Awesome! I shall read that now!
I definately agree that Tali and Garrus seem like friends. I think he could develop a friendship with Thane, but the drell is so reserved that he doesn't talk much with the other squaddies apart from Shepard. Kaidan and him are both very polite and civil people, so it makes sense that they get on well. I always had Wrex and Garrus in ME1, so for me they seem to get on more, but in a way where Wrex shows a bit of 'tough love' to Garrus? Whereas in ME2, I always had Garrus and Thane, so that has probably influenced how I think.

I agree with Alienmorph. However, I would've liked to at least have a conversation with Tali and Garrus about Shepard's death. They were friends in ME1, and it would've been nice for Ivy to vent a little, or at least hear some more about what exactly happened after her death and how everything she and the SR-1 squad worked for fell apart.

But yes, I really do hope that in ME3 you actually work with a mixture of people you already know and have learned to trust and some new squad members. *really hopes for female turian spectre*

Seiyng ANY female Turian (or Krogan too) would be awesome. A Turian spectre will risk to eclipse Garrus' awesomess... at least for 5 second. But still too much 5 second.Unless he/she's the new Nihius of the situation...

Nah, Garrus will always be awesome in my eyes. Besides, he's the only turian allowed into the Commander's quarters ;)

It's really a shame they killed off Nihlus though. I bet he would've been an awesome squad member and I wonder how he would've reacted to the Council and their inability to see the threat.

Yes, me too I was one of those guys who initially was pissed to have "Nihlus Jr." in the team instead of the original. But I chanced my mind off course.

I have had AU plot bunnies for that for the longest time.  I knew almost nothing about Mass Effect when I first played it; I was playing it on my best friend's console, and the conversation literally went like this:

Nihlus: B)
Me: ....:o
My best friend:
Me:  ...wait, he's supposed to be my super secret agent mentor.  GODDAMN IT HE DIES DOESN'T HE.
My best friend:
Me: :crying:

Also, as a side note, have any of you seen this take on the Gaming Afterlife?  So true.  So very very true.  God I want BioWare and Obsidian to team up for a game again.  The last time they did it was when the Obsidian crew were part of Black Isle, and that produced the gem of Baldur's Gate.  Can you imagine what they would do with a modern game?

Here was my progression with the Nihlus thing:
  • Ooh!  Pretty alien.  You're a handsome devil...what's your name?
  • He dies?  BIOWARE WHY YOU GOTTA BE LIKE THAT
  • Ok, I need another handsome devil.
  • Garrus!  You'll do.
  • Okay, you're quite pleasant.  I approve.
  • (ME2)  Whoa.  Excellent.  Calibrate away, my good sir.

I've read a few fics where Nihlus isn't dead, but miraculously survives and becomes Shepards love interest. This for some reason makes me horribly annoyed. Actually, more like gives me fanfic romance rage. Does anyone else feel this way about it? I think Nihlus was/is a great character and there is plenty of opportunity to explore (in a fictional sense) his character before his death. I don't see the point in resurrecting a character just so your Shepard can bone him.

Sorry, end rant.

My favorite such fic is an AU one, anyway, which takes place before the events of ME1, so in that respect, it isn't an issue, since it's well before he was "scheduled to die".
Actually, one of the reasons I like this story so much is that it manages to give him somewhat of a believable (and amusing) personality that also fits well with the story.
