I don't think that's how the Garrus/Shepard relationship works, though. I've read some fanfics where Garrus did have such feelings for Shepard during the events of ME1 (or vice versa), but it's not my own interpretation of how the relationship works. I think they were truly friends first who never entertained the idea until, for some reason, it occurred to one or the other why shouldn't they give it a go?

I was convinced this could happen after doing some after the mission conversations with Elle, and I had Legion with me (oooooh teh LuLz!) and Kal and Tali had their cute little dialogue with each other. "So what was the evidence that you found?" *unsuccessfully playing it stupid* "We didn't find evidence." "Riiiiiiiiiiight." And he keeps calling her Ma'am, after her insistence.

I think as far as squad mates having a relationship with other characters besides Shepard, I think it should only happen if Shepard steers them in that direction. Like Shepard hooking up Kal with Tali, or Garrus with a nice turian. If Shepard doesn't though, it shouldn't happen, IMO. I think this is the best way to please all fans. Romance interests won't hook up with other people on their own, but they will if the player wants them to.

Sure, if they want to please the fans, but from a storytelling perspective, jesus, can't anyone take a **** without Shepard's approval first?

I'm pretty sure the developers will ignore developing any sort of relationships (even closer friendships) among the crew simply because it's not important to them for the progress of the story. Only Shepard's relationships are important. If they did want to explore relationships/friendships beyond Shepard, I would certainly hope the writers make their decisions on what they personally felt like writing and not succumbing to the desire of the fans.

Yea, I was thinking about it as I wrote it. The ME galaxy almost seems to revolve around Shepard. Since Shepard isn't really big on having shortcomings, it's almost bad. I'd like for ME3 to have us able to roleplay Shepard more as a person with faults and problems, rather than some nearly infallible or stalwart action hero. I don't expect them to really do that though - but we'll see. I think allowing us to play our origin stories and psych profiles would go a long way in making Shepard seem more like a person. I know I would feel more sympathy for my Shepard if I saw him go through what happend on Mindoir and Akuze.

Well it's not necessarily mutually exclusive. But yea, on principle - I agree with you - let the writers write what they want. It's unrealistic to expect them not to design the game for the fans in part though - even otherwise insignificant changes like heat clips need their lore.

I don't mind the writers keeping the fans in mind when it comes to Shepard. That's the "fan" character anyway.

But when it comes to the other NPCs, yea, just because the fans think something would happen doesn't mean it will.



We're not those NPCs writers. XD

Now why should maleShep be scared of turian smiles when they seduce femShep? Turian smiles for both genders I say.
Female Turian as a LI for maleShep is probably at the top of my ME wislist at the moment. So unfair that only female Shepards get the realy odd looking aliens (okay Tali probably look very strange but we can't know for sure). Unfair I say. Unfair!

The thing is, with a series that's so heavy about choice, there are bound to be some very disgruntled people when writers set something down in stone. I mean, people were unhappy because you HAD to kill either Ash or Kaidan in ME1, they were unhappy that that person then started ****ing at Shep in ME2. They were unhappy about Liara's personality change in ME2. And can you just imagine what would happen if something was ever set in stone about a Tali romance? There are bound to be some extremely angry Talimancers if the writers decide to pair her up with Kal if Shep is female without giving people a say about it. It's the same issue about DA:O: people were unhappy that the ending HAD to include something either sad or shifty and they were also unhappy because the only squaddie that made it into Awakening was, of all people, Oghren.

It's the price to pay for giving the player choices: the reactions wouldn't be as strong if this was a JRPG, I bet.

Imagine if Leliana and Alistair where to have hooked up in DA:O the fangirl howls would be deafening, even more than after DSC. Also isint it rumoured that Ash and Kaidain where going to hook up if shep stayed single.



That seems to be hinted at by the devs once or twice. Not that it matters since everyone seems to lose their minds around Shep.

The only way I could see taking a squadmate in a certain direction would cause an uproar is if the squadmate was romanceable. But if you didn't romance them, why keep them cloistered eunuchs? If the uproar is "but that's my love interest, that wouldn't happen," then you should have nothing to worry about because the writers aren't going to steal your love interest just to give it to another.

I'm pretty malleable with the romances, though. I suppose one way to imagine it is if you didn't romance Garrus in a playthrough, how would you feel seeing him enjoying a happy relationship with someone else in ME3?

I agree with Nilf. It's important to consider fan reactions. That's why I think my proposed compromise would be the best.

@ Giggles_Manically: Yeah, if you're a FemShep or a MaleShep who killed Ashley's romance before she gets the call from her sister, the sister will say that Kaidan is cute. When MaleShep or a FemShep who's already killed Kaidan's romance asks Ash if she's interested in him, she gives a generic answer along the lines of "fraternization is bad, don't ask, don't tell", which could suggest that she, at least, is interested in him. There aren't any hints to Kaidan being interested in her though.

If FemShep is romancing Kaidan though, Ash will say that she's not interested and that word has it that Kaidan's got his eye one someone else anyway.
