I don't think the female design looks masculine next to the male. The males seem to have harder/straighter/pointier lines while the female tends to be drawn a bit softer/rounder which is a way that's often used to give gender to things that are not exactly human. I like that she's not willowy or small, she looks like she could rough it up with the best of them.
The only problems I have with the design (in so far as looking obviously different to the men) are the same as Kim's the radiation and going against statements made in-game.
I do love her "wtf do you think you're doing?" expression in the last panel where you see her head on; head tilted to the side, one eyebrow/plate raised.

It's said that their skin doesn't offer than any natural armour.. I assume the plating and carapace bits are what developed to tolerate the Palaven sun. I wonder if turians who grow up far away from Palaven are slowly losing the plating since they are no longer evolving in high radiation areas? Sort of like how humans are losing their appendix and baby toes.

Now, if only some turians were like this because their families lived on a world without Palaven's radiation problems for generations, I would totally accept that as a fringe variation assuming there are others with fringe that covers the top of the head.

Indeed, but evolution takes time, several hundreds, sometimes thousands of years. I wouldn't expect to find turians without fringes or plating entirely but maybe some colonies would begin to see smaller fringers/less plating. It wouldn't be too noticeable to most, certainly not to humans who are still relatively new on the galactic scene. And it doesn't explain why females are suddenly fringeless. If anything, the female should have more protection so she can guard her young.. if we are to use bird comparisons.

Anyway, if this does become canon.. I guess I'll have to suck it up and accept it at some point though the biologist within me screams out that this doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

How long have turians been living on planets other than Palaven? I thought it was thousands of years, or I could be wrong and it's only hundreds.

Good question, the official timeline on the Wiki doesn't say (but if you dig through individual colony pages maybe some would say?) The turians were first discovered by the council in 700 CE and gained a council seat in 900 CE. The First Contact War was in 2157. It doesn't seem like enough time for drastic changes to turian physiology, even if they had off-world colonies in 700 CE.

That timeline annoys me.. it lists Thane's birthday and nearly every other companion except Garrus. We know more about Saren than Garrus :/

Hello peoples I am joining this forum on the 706th page XD

I was wondering, would turians really lose there plating just because they weren't being radiated? I mean not having it doesn't really help them survive so why would they lose them?

I wonder how evolution plays out in advanced species, I mean survival of the fittest doesn't really apply in modern western society... I would like to see how it plays out, sadly I doubt I will live that long XD

I'm guessing it would work like when flightless birds wings become smaller, I think the qiwi no longer has any wings.

I know I am late but fringeless Garrus, ROFL! But honestly he still looked better then the female, and I think the facial markings made the difference, barring the fact that it was Garrus in the pic.

@widowspeak, yea I know what you mean, the Gamespot forums are an ...acquired taste, tolerated place?

Maybe she has female pattern baldness?

I don't think the females look less feminine. I think they look uglier than than the males; I don't even think a fringe would fix it. So.. the peacock theory stands?

Well...aside from the distinct possibility that it's just more DH-fail...

She could be a variation of female turians and still not be representative of the majority or all female turians...kind of like with Saren. He looks different and isn't representative of the majority (at least what we have seen) of male turians. It's also still a possibility that she is suffering a case of mange/hacksaw to the head and neck. This is all, of course, assuming DH failed hard on this one, which is also a distinct possibility.

@Sialater: Thank you for the brain salve.

Big thanks to ReiSilver for posting this screen of the comic. At least I now know what it looks like. Of course I have to wait ages for it to come out over here or get it from a specialist retailer. Anyhows on the topic of fringless turians. If the female turians are fringless then what about during Garrus' romance when he says if Shepard was a Turian he would comment on her fringe. And their we have a problem if Fringeless females are made canon but she could be from a different colony. They could've evolved differently dependng on the planets they colonated. Still if it IS canon then at least we can tell who the females are but that still leaves the problem of the fringe admiration of garrus. Still on the plus side we FINALLY get to see some female turians SO thats the best thing think. Also anyone think that turian on the front cover could be Sarens brother?

"The turians had already discovered several mass relays and spawned colonies throughout the galaxy when the asari reached the Citadel. At about the time the asari were forming the Council with the salarians, the turians were embroiled in a bitter civil war next door."

According to ME:Wikia- take it for what it's worth.

I don't remember reading anything official about that first line, but I think I remember reading in the codex about the second part. So, yeah, I think you're right and it's closer to thousands of years than hundreds.

Also, I know it gets brought up every once in a while about how we don't know much about turian culture, but there's a lot of really interesting stuff in the Cerberus Daily News that's worth checking out.

Or...because "someone" might have taken notes when reading through the CDN archives...I could do like a massive "info dump" on what I learned if anyone was interested.

Warning: Massive Info Dump

I’d like to point out that I would caution against taking this information as “seriously” as say, the official codex. This is all from the CDN, and I don’t have a clue who on the BW chain writes the articles, how much they know, how involved they are in lore, etc..

I started taking notes from the CDN when I realized I didn’t know enough information to satisfactorily write about turians. Like I said, this is ONLY the info from the CDN, there’s probably a lot more that could be said about each bullet that was posted, but I just wrote what they gave me.

I used this information to give me a better “feel” for turians and nothing more.

·         Taetrus- turian colony of militant separatists
o   Vallum is the capital
o   Idus Valen is the current Primarch
·         Lifebearer Brigade- turian version of human Intergalactic Red Cross
·         Church of Divine- new religion (though it’s heavily implied it’s more of a cult) that is catching on in Palaven.
·         Turian Clawball- some kind of sport that involves request (is sometimes called throwball)
·         Hielae- throw/clawball court
·         The turian military force has at least (probably way more) six dreadnoughts

Just passing by.

·         A turian MMA fighter won the light-heavyweight title on Earth
·         Battle of Digeris (during the Unification War)- bloodiest day in turian history
·         “Stars Behind Me”- a turian anthem
·         Xemna- some kind of herd animal possibly on Palaven

o   Boot camp- 2nd tier
o   Lawgivers- 23rd tier

·         Some turian cities on Palaven have costly kinetic barriers protecting them.
·         Turians can be conscripted into the military (possibly only after 14th tier)
·          Turians fight in duels to first blood or death, using swords or guns
o   Mexta- turian sword
·         Barrier Room Fight- type of pistol duel
·         Turian saying, “There is no such thing as a turian civilian.” (said by turian General Partinax in response to criticism about turian civilian causalities during turian war)
·         It is a turian taboo to show wartime dead
·         Military duty is the turian qualification for citizenship
·         The average turian family keeps military-issue small arms in their home.
·         The average turian has demolitions training that teaches them how to create firebombs than can blind a tank or force a crew to abandon it.
·         A turian war strategy when conquering citizen military is to set up “safe camps” within cities and kill anyone who doesn’t surrender/take shelter in the camps.
·         Hastatim- Officially: to transport civilians to “safe camps”. They are trained in foreign languages to supplement translators and are issued combat ambulances to transport civilians who cannot transport themselves. Unofficially: They are known by some as “execution squads”, going door-to-door, killing those who don’t surrender.
·         Turian claws are sharp enough to “nick” and sever carotid arteries of humans.
·         Turian suicides are common after great transgressions and are seen to expiate family or unit of shame and failure. (Think Saren)
·         Turians can have twins
·         Turians have a meritocracy
·         Cardiac arrest is an unusual diagnosis for a 41-year-old turian
·         Turians engage in “Laying-to-Rest” ceremonies
·         Orphans of War- turian charity
·         Rolan Quarn- turian conman and thief claiming responsibility for stealing the Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball.
·         Human and turian militaries have gathered on the planet Kruljaven to participate in joint training and survival exercise.

And that’s what I’ve got. Not saying it’s all useful information, but some of it is interesting. All of it can be confirmed by reading the Cerberus Daily News. I tried to write exactly what was written without adding any assumptions unless indicated in parenthesis.
