I do agree with those who say he was created to be stereotypically, ridiculously attractive, what with his cool voice, leather-clad-assassin-with-a-tragic-past-who-is-also-doomed... thing. But Bioware forgot something: When chicks say they like a sense of humor, they are not lying. Now I'm not saying Thane's humorless sadness isn't completely understandable. But I have no interest in making out with it.

And that's the other thing. A sense of humour is incredibly sexy. If I had to choose between angst and humour, I'd pick humour every time (one of the reasons I liked Atton, he made me laugh so much my stomach hurt).

This is the problem I'm currently having with DA2. I haven't decided who to romance yet. Anders just isn't funny anymore, which is a real shame, and Fenris looks rather gloomy as well. If only there was a single L.I. who outclassed all the others. Like Garrus! :P

And to weigh in on the "when did you first start liking Garrus" anecdotes, I started warming up to him when I first saw him arguing with Pallin on the Citadel. It felt like we were kindred spirits, both trying to do the right thing but getting screwed over by the system. That and the voice. *sigh* :innocent:

That Thane comic is awesome. I do really really love Thane... I do.. I just... the way the romance was done felt too forced on me. (not like the Jacob or Kelly romance, mind you) but .... like, "YOU WILL LIKE THANE" lol.

and Thanks KG! :D I already do feel like I belong here. you guys are all great and wonderfully accepting.

I was so scared of Kelly, I couldn't even progress our relationship to the point where I trick her into feeding my fish and then never speak with her again.

As a resut my fish died.

Kelly is a fish murderer.

I liked Kelly. I actually liked pretty much everybody on my crew, which is a first for me. I was always very firm with her though that I would not sleep with her. Once she got it, we were friends.

I liked Kelly once I actually started talking to her. I actually avoided speaking with her the first time I played ME2, because one of the earliest things she said about her profession had me screaming "BS" and other obscenities because Bioware didn't do their psychology homework.

My first experience with Garrus was in ME2 and when he headshot that merc that I was like [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/love.png[/smilie]. His personality got me next and then I fell for the fringe and the voice and the mandibles (it kindof snowballed from there.)  Really, it's the fringe that gets me most. I just want to stroke it and play with it. (I'm a freak, I know.)

oh not at all a freak.  i LOVE the fringe. its one of the sexiest things ever.   when I made my DA2 character, I chose the hair that looked like fringe for my maleHawke. :D  i love the fringe.

and I've read a few fics that have made me like Kelly, but in game... I'm still twitchy.

That was mostly for comedic effect. But seriously, I had heard she will feed your fish, so I was thinking that the first few stages of the romance would be a "haha, let's be friends and talk about our childhoods" kind of thing, like it is with pretty much everyone else, ever. So I started trying for it, but you have to really hit on her to get it to go far enough where she will feed your fish. So I gave up on that. I liked her ok after I shut that down, but she's still not one of my favorites. Maybe next game I'll muscle through it, just to save my fish. My fiiish! (Honestly I should have just fed them all to that Krogan. Less of a waste.)

Back on topic, I think that Garrus has one of the most interesting "this is how my childhood messed me up" stories of the whole crew. His is less overtly dramatic than most of the other LIs, but more telling. I think that not taking that Spectre training really haunts him. I'm guessing it was something he really wanted, and he gave it up out of a sense of familial duty. After that, his whole life was like a guy who gave up his rock band to take an office job - one big game of "what could have been?"

There's that reference in his LotSB file that implies he won't reach his full potential while under Shepard's command... but he was also not necessarily reaching it without her, either, unless we're talking about his potential for getting shot in the face by a helicopter. I think he needs a combination of Shep's influence, better self confidence, and some sort of rudimentary acknowledgement that he can't always be batman, in order to reach his full potential.

That's just my opinion. I mean he's already Garrus Vakarian. How much more potential could he possibly have?

I knew I loved Garrus the moment he shot that guy in the head to save Dr. Michel.  I remember trying to explain it to my roommate who was sitting nearby and it came out like, "The bad guy was holding this chick hostage and then this giant alien dude came out of nowhere and shot him in the face!!" XD I was way too excited about it. Instant heart eyes. I ended up avoiding all the LIs
dat voice

You know what I regret about ME1? That Shepard never got to dance with Garrus. At first I thought that you could dance with any squaddie, so I brought Garrus to Flux with me whenever I could, but he never danced with me. :crying:

Turian dancing for ME3! I just hope his moves are better than this guy's.

Dancing could be fun.. in an antique shop..full of classy stuff.

So after reading that awesome blog entry, I had a thought (ok I've had this thought before but whatever) that was basically along the lines off.. sure, Garrus is a total turian badass but do you think he cares about being a badass? He's always so humble and cool about everything.. about being selected for Spectre training, about pissing off those mercs on Omegas, and generally wants Shepard to be the star badass. I think it's what makes him so charming and fun to be around.. he doesn't boast or gloat about his abilities, he just IS that good at what he does. Plus his humour isn't always a mask, he's genuinely a light-hearted guy despite his past and the things he's gone through. I hope we can give him a bit of a self-confidence boost in ME3 though but overall, I'm glad to have a rebellious, badass character who isn't TRYING to be a rebellious, badass.. you know?

I LOVE TECHNO TURIAN!!  whenever I'm having a bad day, I watch this video and it makes me instantly happy. :D
He never danced with me either, I never figured out how to make it happen. sadly...

I definitly think that he is waaay too humble to understand how badass he is.  I mean, when you meet him as Archangel, you walk in and he's all, "oh, let me just casually shoot this guy."  then he's so sad and defeated sounding... like he didn't just shoot someone in the face without actually aiming for them.   I hope that he's more confident, or that we as his LI's get to help him be more confident in ME3.  I remember hearing about that note from the DLC, since I haven't played it yet... about him having potential. Makes me wonder if I'd want to let him go for him to achieve it, you know?  i mean, we're always stronger when being with the one we love, right?

Well it specifically says he's unlikely to develop further under Shepard's command, which of course means to me we have to become partners instead.

I generally don't like excessively happy personalities and I don't like psychologists. Kelly always bothered me, not badly, but her role on the ship was so forced.

Strangely, the only excessively happy personality I do remember liking (IRL) is my psych 101 professor. Pretty strange but hey, she gave out smarties and dum dums after each test.

Free candy man, definitely worth it.

This.  100% this.

Not that I don't love the characters who are obviously intended to be rebellious badasses; Jack, Fenris, etc.  They're cool too.  But Garrus just has this understated awesomeness.  Took a rocket to the face?  No big deal.  Tapped for Spectres?  Meh, it was Wednesday.  No constant cursing, no glowing lyrium tattoos.  He doesn't need to show you he's epic win.  He just IS epic win.

Garrus has a personality that makes guys want to be him and girls want him. I'm sure he would kick asses to save kittens.
First time I met him, I thought: hmmm, this turian looks great, but THAT VOICE is even better. After shooting that man in the clinic, I felt in love with him. I swear I spent the first game hoping for a chance to make him my LI. Then I googled it and I read I couldn't :crying:

ME2 made me happy forever. I played it without knowing who was Archangel, but when I saw him shooting that guy in his blue armor, I started shouting: Garrus, Garrus!!!

Now I hate BW for making me want him. Last time I hated them was when I discovered that Bishop in NWN2 was supossed to be a LI but got cancelled.

Edit: mmm, I think NWN2 was Obsidian's too. God, I hate them always!

That picture of Saren and Nihlus a few pages back is awesome. :D Now, for a catch-up post.

When did I start to like turians? The minute Nihlus appeared on screen. They're just so cool in every way. And when did I start to like Garrus? The minute he appeared on screen. I already liked turians, and here was a guy who wanted to help my Shepard. I was glad when he joined the team.

As for humor in romance options... it's not important to me. I like Garrus' sense of humor, but if I don't like a character's sense of humor and they joke around too much, I just end up thinking it's annoying. I don't like Alistair's sense of humor. I don't remember thinking even one of his jokes was funny. So the humor can go either way for me, as an added bonus to the character or as something that makes them hard to take seriously.

Then there are times when a character says something that I think is funny in a sarcastic kind of way, but they're not actually trying to make a joke - that's usually a good thing. I know Saren wasn't trying to make anyone laugh when he said that his two rules were "never kill someone without a reason" and "I can always find a reason to kill someone," but if that's his sense of humor, I like it. xD

Obsydian wrote...

So I was just thinking about this.... I think its cause I was dreaming about turians.
I'm probably rediculously late to the party with this realization, but oh well. Our three main turians cover the philosophical extremes.
Nihlus = extreme good. I get the feeling that he's the hero type who does whats right. I see him taking the moral high ground.
Garrus = generally sticks to around the middle of the road. Potential to go either way, but would never go the extreme in either direction.
Saren = ...I don't want to say evil, but he's pretty evil. Again, even before indoctrination, he definitly did not seem to do things the morally right way.

Thoughts? or am I reading too much into this?

Nihlus, extreme good? He was trained by Saren. xD Have you seen the conversation with Samara about the time she fought with Nihlus? He managed to escape because he put an innocent's life in danger, knowing that Samara's code wouldn't allow her to harm the innocent. Saren is ruthless. I think that's the best word to describe it. And Garrus is a "compassionate Renegade," basically the turian version of Renegon Shepard.

The turian race as a whole seems to support more brutal methods, judging by the Cerberus news articles. Saren isn't unique in that way.

Platform_Error wrote...

It just seemed to me that toward the end Saren starts to really hear Shepard, almost like he considers him/her an exception to the rule regarding his hatred. I know that doesn't imply romantic feelings, I guess I just like pretending that's what it implies for my own amusement XD. You're right, there isn't any evidence to support that either turian was interested but I think in Nihlus' case there was, at the very least, some potential. I mean, Shepard definitely had his attention. Oh heck, I just love turians and I want them all to love my femshep XD

Awesome! I'm not the only one who wants to believe this. xD

I think it really depends on the Shepard. There seems to be some respect no matter what, as Shepard was able to catch up with him at every step of the way, but certain personality types would definitely clash with Saren and his more ruthless methods. I imagine Saren and my MainShep together though (after a resurrection), and the two of them have a lot in common. The best part is, I can actually play a Shepard who loves Saren in-game and have nothing contradict it - telling Anderson that Saren had the right idea at the refinery, telling Garrus not to kill him, agreeing with Liara that you feel sorry for him, and Paragon persuading him in the end.

Saren also never acted like he hated Shepard. There were so many times when he could have killed Shepard, but didn't. When he lifted Shepard up on Virmire, Saren could have easily pulled a gun on him/her. When he was leaving on the geth hoverboard, he and Shepard just stared at each other, and neither one reached for a weapon or tried to attack. And their conversations never gave off a "hate" vibe. They seemed familiar with each other, he sounded impressed, and like he really wanted Shepard to stay out of this in the beginning... then wanted Shepard to join him once he/she understood the Reaper threat. If he hated Shepard and thought that Shepard was so inferior, he wouldn't have offered or even tried to explain himself, or been convinced that his idea was wrong. So Shepard's definitely the exception to the rule, whether there are romantic feelings or not.

Obsydian wrote...

I think that I need to have a Shep that had a thing with Nihlus. This now needs to happen.  And so she'd be all broody through ME, and then when Garrus is an LI in the second game, it'll be all like, 'yay another turian!"  lol.

Go for it! My FemShep who romanced Garrus originally liked Nihlus too. MainShep was the more emotional of the two though, after everything that happened with Saren. That scene during the Normandy grounding when she was all sad and hopeless-looking? Definitely thinking about Saren.
