Turians are the smexiest for me. Although I don't find Thane repulsive or anything remotely like that. And I second that his entrance was fantastic.
<---is looking forward to completing her canon PT of ME2, complete with long-awaited Garrus romance scene, once she finishes the accursedly never-ending DA:O (~108 hours and counting!!!!)

Additionally, CGG is reading my mind again when it comes to alien culture and the human media phenomenon.  I'd totally read turian literature.  I mean, hell, I liked Hero.

Advertising, tabloids, and extranet memes: God bless humanity.

EDIT: Better link for better trailer.  It screams Hierarchy propaganda.

Speaking of turian art, on my first playthrough of Kasumi's DLC when you first get to look around the vault and can examine all those pieces of sculpture and what not.. I remember honing in on the turian pieces first and thinking "Oh I like this style a lot I wonder where it comes from.." and then Kasumi gives her little comments and then it's like "Of course, is there anything about turian culture/society that doesn't appeal to me?"

I hope we will get more tidbits about culture in ME3 (or maybe in the new CDN entries later in the year) because that stuff is probably what interests me the most (outside of individual characters and their personalities).

They get compared to space Romans a lot but I always found them to be more Asian in how they approach day-to-day life. Can't wait to see Palaven :D

This might have been mentioned in this thread, so please forgive me if so and don't hit, lol...I don't read every post like in the old days. ;)
But did anyone notice how much the turian art from Hock's vault resembles the actual turian shuttlecraft from ME1 that you find on planets here and there?
At least they're consistent in their design...

Oh gosh Palaven. I keep picturing it as like..a combination of futuristic greco-rome and the Gobi desert. With random specklings of poppies. :>

Is it strange that I don't find Thane physically attractive but can find almost all turians in the game physically attractive? Maybe it's the bright green scale thing.. but I'd rather go for the guys with the exoskeletons and pretty fringes.

And it's great that we can have so many interesting discusions around here without any needless bashing or arguments going.. all of the musical suggestions have been excellent and yay more MAKO love!

Kg - the only thing that would make that scene better is an antique shop ;)

I think Thane looks physically striking.  But I wouldn't say that I find him physically attractive; the fin thingies and multiple eyelids are a bit weird to me.

I seem to be in the minority on turians, though; most of them I don't find physically attractive either.  I find Garrus and Nihlus attractive because they're freaking GARRUS and NIHLUS.

I just finished an amazing fic that ended on Palaven. It was beautiful, and now I have new headcanon. However, her description of Palaven was pretty cool. I liked her idea of it. :D
I'mma rec it here, cause everyone should read this.   its really fantastic. Though you've all probably read it before.

Blarg! Don't even remind me about fan-fictions right now. I am horribly stuck with mine in trying to make Daddy Vakarian believable, and it's soured my mood on EVERYTHING lately. /facepound into desk.

I'll have to read it when I'm not stuck. >.<

Oh I hear ya, Vega, I'm still stuck on my fic. trying to get past this one plot point so I can move on with the darn story (honestly, exposition is a pain in the arse and can't wait to be done with it).. and I've not even gotten to describing Palaven or Papa Vakarian yet, those will be their own tough obstacles.

I liked it, too--very minimalist/constructivist/process art (art nerd alert).  This makes sense with the turians, since they seem like the types to find beauty in simplicity and true art not in the final product, but in the hard work that went into it.

Side note on constructivism: The point behind the movement was that art and architecture should serve a social purpose.  Form, function, and message were all equally important, and anything that didn't have a point or meaning behind it was frowned upon.  Fluidity and expression were traded for simple, stoic, and geometric compositions.  The early Soviets went to town with this stuff in the 20s and 30s, and the art of that time was inseperable from politics.  Read more about it here.

I hope we will get more tidbits about culture in ME3 (or maybe in the new CDN entries later in the year) because that stuff is probably what interests me the most (outside of individual characters and their personalities).

Same here.  I play ME first for the characters, and second to get lost in the lore.

They get compared to space Romans a lot but I always found them to be more Asian in how they approach day-to-day life. Can't wait to see Palaven :D

I always thought of them as redneck communists.  Selfless servants of the state who shoot small animals every Saturday for sh*ts and giggles.  It's a charming little oxymoron, you know?

Ah, Palaven.  Tropical, yet industrial--an odd juxtaposition of the conquered and the untamed.

Chalk that up as another thing I find sexy about turians: there's something inherently feral about them, but they're just so goshdarn disciplined and sophisticated!  They're like angry dinosaurs in uniform.

No, they are angry dinosaurs in uniform.  Seriously, I'll bet that's precisely how the conversation started...

"Hey, guys.  Guys.  I just the best idea for an alien ever.  Check it out: it's a raptor dressed like a Sith Lord."

"Damn, son!  Give it an exoskeleton and a kitty face and we have our villain!"

"It's such a good design, though--why waste it on just the bad guy?"

"Okay, okay; put some facepaint and a Vegeta-scouter thinge on it.  He can be Shepard's sidekick."

"I like it.  He should be a cop."

"A bad cop."

"Dirty Harry."

"With a hot voice."

"F*ck yeah.  Let's make a whole race of these guys!"

Lol Thane. The "I want you, Thane" option came out of NOWHERE for me. I was just starting to become genuinely interested in him. Don't force it like that Bioware, give us time to develop the relationship beyond getting them into bed. xD

Ahahaha.  I remember that. We were having a nice conversation (can't exactly remember about what) and suddenly Shep has the option to say "I want you".

At least with Thane you had an option, though. When talking to Jacob, I was desperately searching for the "just friends" button.

Having actually done the Thane romance now, that "I want you" option really annoys me. It would've been bad enough if that was what Shep actually said (which is what I thought before doing the romance), but no, she actually says something quite appropriate to the situation along the lines of "I haven't been completely honest about my motives, but if you need someone, I'm here for you". I think that makes it worse. HOW "I want you, Thane" is an appropriate paraphrase for that is beyond me. And I think the problem is it turns a few people off from Thane's romance because of how shockingly direct it sounds, whereas when you do pick it, it actually works.

Jacob on the other hand, there's nothing to do about. Shep sounds like a rabid horndog whenever she opens her mouth in front of the poor guy. I don't like Jacob, but I pity him for having to put up with Shep-on-the-hump.

As for when I knew that Garrus would have to be my canon Shep's LI? When I first read about the ME games while considering whether to buy them. I looked up each main character's personality on the Wiki, and Garrus won so much it wasn't even funny. Then of course, I actually did start ME1, and I heard Dat Voice:

"Commander Shepard? Garrus Vakarian."

...and I cursed that I'd chosen a KaidanShep as my first ME1 playthrough.

Concerning songs, count me in among the horde of Muse fans. Undisclosed Desires works very well for Garrus and Shepard (but I can't really think of a romance it doesn't work for...)

I have another song to propose, but:

1) It's either a Garrus who gets dumped for Kaidan (or Jacob, has to be a human LI).
2) An unromanced Garrus who realizes he has feelings for Shepard.
3) Garrus during his stand on Omega, still thinking that Shepard is dead.

Ie. depressing. My Body is a Cage, Peter Gabriel version (I prefer it to the Arcade Fire original). And no, if anybody's wondering, I haven't seen that House M.D. episode.

And then there's also the song I automatically think of whenever someone broaches the topic of music for the Garrus/Shep romance: Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)

I was just musing about turian cuisine. With their big pointy teeth and general raptory-ness do you think they're carnivorous? I wonder how they cook their food... Or do they eat it raw ;P

Well it was confirmed that they had gizzards so I always pictured that whatever they ate came with a side of small rocks or something to swallow afterwards.

Not all gizzards require eating rocks though. Some of them have chitin plates on the inside already (cf. here) , so that might also be the case for turians.

OMG, lovegreno...Your picture made me laugh so. hard.  I love it!

Poor Thane...It's not that I find him ugly; he's very pretty, but his coloring reminds me too much of a parrot or lizard. Except now that I say that, I'm trying to imagine if Garrus had the same coloration, would I still be into him?  I can't say, because if you'd asked me if I could ever find a tall, vaguely skeletal hawkdino with mandibles sexy  before I played ME2, I'd probably say no, never.  We see how well that's working out for me.  That, and I'm having too much trouble imagining a technocolor turian!  Add to that "Oh, your wife just died?  Pity.  Let's have sex, then."...Durr. Bright move, Shepard!

ZenX wrote...
So everyone, in the interest of striking up a conversation, what was that one moment when you realized Garrus absolutely had to be your Shepard's LI? Assuming you did pick him, anyway.

Hm, good question...Believe it or not, I usually play FemShep (MSheps have too much of a tendency to look funky, at least when I'm trying to customize them...) and I do specifically remember cheating a bit by looking up whether or not Garrus was romanceable.  I also remember ditching Jacob for him...I had started off liking Jacob, as he seemed to be a down-to-earth soldier type, I figured "Cool, a drama-free, no-nonsense sort of guy...My Shepard would appreciate this."  Then Shepard and Jacob started acting all sleazy together and I was like ENOUGH OF THIS NONSENSE...Shepard dumped him for Garrus.  In the end, Jacob had himself a good pout, I lol'd, and my Shepard frolicked away with her new beau.  Various FemSheps have all gone Garrus' way since their romance has a d'awwww factor that cannot be denied.  The only one who has not is my main Shep, Aquila.  I created her after I got the first game and in it, I romanced Kaidan- admittedly because I have a soft spot for the guy.  He reminds me a lot of my SO of 7 years, what with that quiet/calm/grounded/gentle nature of his.  But yeah.  The Garrus on my hard drive is a pimp.

Off-topic, but I remember that first Shepard's name.  It was "Shep."  Because I was having trouble coming up with names and "Shep Shepard" was just dumb enough for me to find it amusing.

Edited to add: Turian pellets would be hilarious.  Especially if they just hacked them up with no fanfare.  Think about it.

Turian councilor:  "Ah, yes...'Rea-'"   He hacks a few times, and then spits a pellet into a spittoon.  He coughs before continuing.  "...As I was saying.  'Reapers.'  We have dismissed that claim."

I'm going to go with carnivores, so probably lots of tough meats. As for cooking, there is a turian chef on Zakera Ward in one of the shops. I can't remember if any of the banter talks about turian food in particular but he seemed to know his spices very well.

I recal he was giving cooking advice to a human though. How a turian would know which foods tasted good to humans is beond me....

I think they're almost certainly carnivorous, both because of their teeth and their lack of cheek pouches.  They probably ripped off chunks of meat "back in the day" and swallowed them whole since they can't chew.  Plus, there's the gizzard thing people have already mentioned, although whether they're a soft, thin structure (as would be all that was needed for meat, being soft and non-fibrous and all) or a thick, muscular organ (as would be neccessary for grinding grasses/seeds/other plant matter) is a mystery.

Raptors have the former type of gizzard; herbivorous birds have the latter.
