Thane's is more meolodramatic. Garrus is more emotional on a deeper level. To me, anyways.
I'm glad Garrus doesn't come to my room and start crying. That doesn't really put me in the mood. "Oh, hey, you're crying...um...you want a tissue? Oh you want to kiss me? Um...that's ok."
Plus, crying isn't really Garrus' thing. So, while Thane's seems more emotional, it's not really, it's just different emotions. Garrus is coming to Shepard in quiet hope. It's happier, I think. Most certainly sweeter.

I found that Garrus relationship was the most natural (to me, of course). They've known each other for a long time, they trust each other, they're friends and they started to think about something else. They make jokes, they chat with confidence and they're more close than any other couple in the game. As we approach the end, it's obvious that it's not just a fling, it's a tender, emotional and trustable way to develop a romance.

I've always found the other romance stories a little forced, too fast, too much flirting... I just didn't like them.

To me, Garrus romance is just perfect.

I saw Garrus's romance from a different angle.

When you talk with Garrus about flexibility and stuff, and you express you want more from him then being friends, IMO he looks little unsure, that he sees Shepard more of as a friend than a lover, and would never consider to feel that kind of love from her. So at first he accepts Shepards "offer", but he does that because he's being nice. But then as the relationship progress, he starts to see Shepard from another perspective, and really starts caring for her.

Turning Garrus down makes you see that he really wanted this to work and gets crushed.

This was another one of my concerns. Would Garrus actually prefer to be stay friends? He does seem a bit uncomfortable. It's nice when you think someone has thought of you in a romantic way before, but you don't really get that impression with Garrus.

I agree that he could be deeper than he comes off though.

Edit: I missed your edit, and I agree that I think he developed more feelings towards the end. I watched the video of a break-up at that point and it really did seem like he was hurt.

I would have thought the same thing at first if he hadn't said "yeah, definitely!" the way he did

I think he's unsure for all the cross-species stuff and the fact that everything he has tried to acomplish has always ended bad.

"Nervous, maybe. But never uncomfortable."

I think he's just surprised at first that Shepard is taking it seriously and maybe that comes across as nervousness, yeah. He really wants things to go well though and he cares about Shepard (but darn it, we never get to hear Shepard tell him that she cares, she will tell Mordin and Liara about it though).

If it didn't work out for one (or both) of them, I'm sure they would both be ok with just being friends and having a laugh about it afterwards, which is part of the beauty of their relationship.

But there's definitely a chance that the two of them want it to be more than friends with benefits, and when Garrus confesses at the end "I want something to go right, just this once" he's really showing how badly he wants it to work out. A guy looking for a fling wouldn't open himself up like that.

And welcome to the thread, Ashley.

Plus, he said himself that Shepard doesn't make him uncomfortable. He's nervous and unsure at the beginning, of course. It's completely new territory for him, but you can see him starting to like the idea. And as Bolboreta mentioned it, I'll never forget that "Yeah, definitely."

Thanks. I really liked my first play-through, I was just debating whether I wanted to use this one as my main or start another as a renegade with Thane. I'm pretty sure I will stick with this one though because I do like Garrus more than Thane overall. I was just wondering if the consensus was that he does indeed have feelings for Shepard (and everyone has made good points for that being the case).

@Bolboreta True, but he gets really suprised on the idea of going further than friends. If I remembeer correctly, what he said was "Oh, I didn't...huh. Never knew you had weakness for men wirh scars".

But you can see it from different perspectives.

@leonia42 Yeah, I agree. And if you turn down Garrus, he gets so sad it's just painful. Makes me wonder why he didn't shoot a bullet in his head.

Yup, welcome Ash. There's cookies on the table, have some.

The best romance!

Always when I choose to start a new game as FemShep, I ALWAYS pick Garrus' romance because of his badass-ness and how awesome he is!

All of my 4 FemSheps romanced Garrus :P

Hey all, I'm new to this thread.

I did romance Garrus in my first play-through but I'm wondering if you guys thought that romance was as satisfying as Thane's. I looked at the YouTube videos for the Thane romance and it seems like there is a lot more depth of emotion there.

So I'm curious about your thoughts on this. Do you think Garrus cares about Shepard as much as Thane does and he's just not as expressive? Or is the relationship he has with Shepard more of a fling to him than what you could have with Thane?

This might be a bit unfair coming from me. I haven't played through Thane's romance myself, but I've watched whatever vids I could on YouTube to be more informed about it.

I think the difference between the two romances, as Bolboreta pointed out, is the level of familiarity the characters have with each other. Garrus needs to be recruited in Mass Effect for the romance to even appear as a potential dialogue option for FemShepard to pursue. Without that pre-existing history, there's no intimacy, and therefore no foundation for the ro-ro-romance to spring board off of. I don't feel as though it's necessary for Garrus and Shepard (or Shepard and Tali, for that matter) to be as open in their feelings for each other as the other romances might need to be because of that. It's a decent example of "less is more."

I like it better that way. It seems strange to have a character profess the depth of their feelings to my character when it feels like I've barely had the opportunity to know them. The confessions also tend to be kind of embarrassing for me to listen to because it seems practiced and unnatural (which seems punctuated with the lack of aforementioned familiarity). Garrus is...not even close to being poetic or suave when his romance scene pops up, and it turns into a trainwreck in record time, but it ends on an open ended, poignant note. Thane's romance is touching too, though. Not my cup of tea, but I could definitely see why people would prefer it to Garrus' for the reasons you've mentioned.

And there's nothing wrong with liking it more than Garrus' romance. 'S all cool.

Never got around to posting this one last night. A 'deleted scene' from the last vid I did. I ALMOST went with it as the ending when I had tech difficulties, but I felt it deserved to be seen on its own:

Oh look, the most beautiful rainbow ever!

*dies laughing*   OMG Lycan. :D  I love all of these all the time. you are brilliant.

Also,  I have debated so damned hard between Thane and Garrus in the past.  I really really like Thane, and not cause he's 'what the fangirls wanted' ... but because he is an awesome character.  I really love the assassin thing. I've always had a thing for that. The "i'm a weapon to be used."  Very ninja. In the traditional sense, not the 'ninja's are cool' sense. That said,  its not enough of a basis to romance him. And while I think its sweet that Shepard wants to help him, I don't think there's the emotion there that is in Garrus's romance. The only ones I can see coming close is Liara or Tali for the same reason. They've been with you for so long.

I watched the Liara romance that continues into the DLC.  and OMG it was gorgeous. I would never romance her, honestly, and I'm really not into asari, but hers was the best done next to Garrus's I'd say.  You can see the emotion.   When Shep says, "come back soon"  when Liara leaves.... damn. Lady Hale performed amazingly there.
With Garrus though, I honestly can see the two of them having interest in one another since the first game. They've been through so much, and they have each other's backs and that does spark interest sometimes. I think Garrus just never really considered interspecies anything.
My headcanon wants to say that there was interest beforehand... and that Garrus just never really thought it would happen.

I try. ^_^

And on the subject of LI's, I've never been crazy about Thane. I mean, I love him as a character, the whole awesome assassin part, but I've just never been so keen on him as a LI. I guess I'm just go Garrus all the time. The whole reason I was first so excited when I found out he had a romance option in ME2, was because I felt like out of all the other squadmates, he was the one that deserved a little Afternoon Delight the most :D

Couldn't agree more with you, Chewin3. He looks very nerveous, and I can see him going in his head, "Should I do it? Nah, we're friends. Or wait, just...maybe":D
